I don't see them ordering 20 781 when they already have 25 A350 on order (with 11 delivered).
This order could mean a reduction of the 779 order from 34 to 20 though. The original 34 77X and 25 A350 order covered the replacement of all 744s, A346s and A343s.

Only 20 779s were ever ordered.

Only 20 are on firm order, LH still states they have 34 779s on order. Thats what the press statement 5 years ago said and thats what they still state to this day.

While Boeing and Airbus have on occasion taken back used jets to seal deals, they probably wouldn’t consider A340 trade-ins from just any potential buyer, said George Ferguson, an analyst with Bloomberg Intelligence.

Would be surprised to see them at LH mainline though. Especially as they seem quite happy with their A350s.

Or might the 787 be ordered instead of the B777-9 order. That order seems to be under internal scrutiny as well.

True. I would argue, however, that both Boeing and LH have to agree there are 34 on order. There are, apparently, too may contingencies for Boeing under accounting rules to record those 14 aircraft as firm orders. My point being is that while LH may say there is a reduction from 34 to 20 orders for the 779, such a reduction wouldn't be reflected on Boeing's books.

Delta must be insane to use the A350 TATL
aviationaware wrote:As an example, Opening a 787 fleet would potentially allow Lufthansa to operate a small and efficient plane to open and trial new routes. There are also a range of airlines in the group for which the 787 would be an ideal choice - just in the case of Austrian not the crown jewel.

Not really. In the US their regional airlines are not owned by most of the majors. Lufthansa owns all those carriers & does joint orders through the parent company. So yes they could have that many airframes

What do you they have on order smaller than the A350-900? The 787 and A350 are compliments as much as they are direct competitors. A359 is larger than the 788/789. They will operate it, just a matter of time.

No contingencies. Those 14 "orders" have not been signed off by the supervisory board, hence they are no orders.
