Aerolineas Argentinas and the 747 in the 70's and 80's

Fri Oct 19, 2018 2:01 pm

Hi there !

I was reading an extraordinary old press article ( sorry, only in Spanish ) and some issues raised my curiosity . My question is, where in Europe flew those AR 747´s during the 70´and 80´s ? I know some destinations were MAD and ZRH, but did they go anywhere else?

Thanks !

EZE-LIM-MEX-LAX was active for quite some years. I remember AR's 747s being regular visitors at MEX. In 92, we flew LAX-MEX on an AM MD-80. The AR 747 was at TBIT as we were. We departed earlier, and of course, when we arrived in MEX, the 747 had already been there for quite some time. It amazed me. Back then I didn't know the 747 was faster than pretty much any other airliner.

AR took pride in inaugurating a southern "polar" route to Oceania, can't remember if SYD or Auckland from EZE with a tech stop at Rio Gallegos around 1980. There was a featured article in the spanish version of Reader's Digest about that in the early 80's which, of course, captured my young aviation fan imagination.

Initially they flew to AR's main destinations in Europe, MAD and FCO, beginning in 1976, but had to stop at GIG on the way (GRU was not on the cards yet) as their range did not allow them to fly nonstop between EZE & MAD. So the MAD nonstop continued on the 707s until 1979, when a new batch of 747-287B started arriving, powered with the JT9D-7Q and took over completely over all flying to Europe: MAD, FCO, FRA, CDG, LHR & ZRH. Later on AMS was added. In 1980 a 747-SP27 was added and flew nonstop from EZE to FCO and CDG. The 747s were the workhorse of the international fleet until the late 90s when the A340 was added. The -200s were gone from the fleet by 2006 and the last 3 747-400 were retired in 2012.

Most of the European flying was cancelled in the 90s: multi-stops did not cut it anymore and the airline concentrated on Spain and Italy, which remains the case until today.

747-287B LV-MLR did the honors flying EZE-RGL-AKL-HKG-LAX-EZE back in 1980, demonstrating the commercial viability of the Southern Seas route. AR developed all the navigational charts, etc, that have made the route possible today. Sadly, after 34 years of flying the route to AKL and SYD the airline cancelled the route to concentrate on Europe and North America. Parts of LV-MLR are preserved today in Buenos Aires.

A lot of FCO flying for AR 747s, and I also remember the SP at LHR?.. fuzzy memories from those lovely dark ages of deep pile carpeted cabins and lovely stewardesses...

Also MIA, JFK , YYZ , YUL, CPT, BOG, and charters to MCO and CUN. Also charters to USH, BRC (winter) and IGR ( during easter). COR-MAD, COR-MIA, ROS-MIA, for a time . The transpolar was EZE RGL AKL SYD, and back but without the stop at RGL. All of these with the -200.

I'm sure AR flew their 747s to Caracas in the late 80s/early 90s.
I believe the route was EZE-CCS-MIA-CCS-EZE

CCS was flown with the 747 around the early 80s, right after the Falklands conflict when AR had surplus capacity. One 747 (LV-MLO) went to Flying Tigers until 1990, flying troops for the US Armed Forces. It always kept its LV-registry. In 1990 it came back home and replaced the 747SP that went to Air Mauritius. CCS was flown until the early 90s with the sole remaining 707 in the fleet, the LV-ISC, which was kept just for these flights to CCS. Now, I don't believe AR ever did EZE-CCS-MIA (maybe in the early 80s?) but happy to be wrong on that one! When IB took over the administration, CCS was flown with the MD80s via VVI. AR no longer flies to CCS due to the Venezuelan crisis. Last operated schedule to CCS was daily with the 738s, nonstop from EZE.

The EZE-CCS 747 service in the early 80s continued on to JFK, and v.v. on the return.

Wonderful article. Thanks for posting! I found interesting in the article that AR's long-haul flights in '80s averaged a 60% load factor. This was pretty much the case when national air carriers were heavily protected by their governments and fares were governed by IATA strict fare rules. Under those circumstances, AR had a pretty impressive route map.

There's an Argentine movie from 1982 called "Plata Dulce" that does a great job showing the state of mind of the country at the time when it was in style to take a trip to shop in one of Miami's malls. I love that movie. In a comical way, it shows the ups and downs of Argentine psyche due to the country's economic situation which tends to repeat itself over and over to this day. I mention it because at around 52 minutes a beautiful AR 747 makes a special appearance delivering happy people from their shopping trip to the US. If you look closely you can read the arrivals sign showing different flights from the time including AR 384 LAX-MEX-LIM-EZE.

Yes, in the 70's and 80's having a 747 in the fleet was a symbol of prestige for flag airlines..no matter if financially it meant a complete disaster. Seems not unusual to see those load factors among many airlines during those times.

One winter Friday I flew KLM AMS to JFK (742, I guess) except a huge snow storm (Feb. '83) diverted us to YMX......was two days before we got out on our original aircraft, then circled over Kingston, NY went bingo fuel so back to YMX. KL crew was now over their hours and took the 742 back to AMS with some freight only. We got fixed up on a sked on AR, another 742 with routing YMX-JFK-MIA and EZE. The short hop to JFK was not easy at all as we circled Kingston again for an hour, then landed and taxied in a circle around JFK for an hour, finally arriving 2 days and about 5 hours late. Was happy AR saved our rear ends that weekend!

I really like this video of an AR 742 taking off from Rio Gallegos (technical stop) on its way to Auckland and Sydney.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqxLe8OPwvE

I vaguely recall that in the '90s AR had two 747 flights into MIA. One was nonstop MIA-EZE and one was MIA-GRU-EZE (with 5th freedom rights). Was this correct? They left within minutes from each other when they departed MIA. I may be wrong.

Could well be the case. For decades, AR was the largest foreign international carrier in Brazil, first at GIG and then at GRU. The only catch about the flight you mention is that it had to be in the early 90s. Around 95-98 AR abandoned all long haul flying from/to Brazil as that stop became uncompetitive for its main market: travelers to/from EZE.

A caveat to that is Federal Express merged Flying Tigers later in 1989 so LV-MLO may well have worn the small Federal Express sticker behind the cockpit windows while it was carrying troops after the August 1989 merger date. I got to fly N890FT (formerly EI-BPH) 747-133 from Osan AB back to Oakland (via Yokota and Anchorage) in January 1989 and aboard that flight I learned about the forthcoming purchase of FT by Federal Express. Thankfully, I photo'd FT's LV-MLO at Osan several times during 1988, as well as EI-BPH/N890FT and a number of the freighters.

LV- MLO had a colorful history after its return from FedEx in 1990. It flew all over the AR network until its retirement in the very early 2000s. It was then parked at EZE waiting its date with the scrappers. That was when things took a turn to the not so sweet hereafter. As MLO laid there, strange noises and lights coming from the abandoned plane were heard, Staff reported seeing the ghost of a flight attendant that had died a few months earlier from cancer and who had done her final flight on LV-MLO, a few weeks before her passing. The plane has since been parted out and sold for scrap.

Interesting story! One cool thing about my flight home on N890FT in Jan 89, we pulled into ANC in middle of the night in a rather heavy snowfall and, not surprisingly, we parked right next to LV-MLO, both of us on troop runs of course. I was unable to take a photo of both jets due to the crazy hour and snow. I have to check my logs to see whether I saw LV-MLO anymore times during 89 or 90...I got stationed in Arizona and visited LAX a number of times.

Yeap. That was her. Interesting that even when carrying US troops. it flew the Argentinian flag.

When she was first delivered, she had JT9D engines with different nacelles, but these were changed to the regular JT9D ones shortly after. Here she is seen at LHR in 1979 with the original engines as delivered.

Here she is at EZE when she was home to beings that could't be quite explained:

Now that we are talking about AR's 742s, correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember seeing a scrapped one lying on the same field where Top Gear used to make their car testing, ain't it?

An ex- AR one? Or other 747?

I remember a mostly white 742 with the Marsans era dark blue tail. But always in the background so couldn't give it a proper look.

Probably this one

A closer look at that 747 shows it has RR engines, which AR never operated.

In any case, all the 747s ordered by AR new from Boeing (with the exception of the first one, LV-LZD which went from AR to Virgin Atlantic) have been scrapped in Argentina.

The very first route with the brand new type on the fleet, the 747-287B was EZE-GIG-MAD-FCO-FRA and FRA-FCO-MAD-GIG-EZE just one time per week, starting this route on Jan 1977 with the LV-LZD.

I flew from EZE to Rio Gallegos on a 747 that the flight crew said was the first 747 ever entered into the AR fleet, this was back in '98 and the plane was showing her age. If i remember the plane went on to SYD, we transferred on to Ushuaia which was the scariest landing I have ever experienced; all around a very memorable day on Aerolinas Argentinas.

The first 747 was LV-LZD (line number 274) which left the fleet in 1982, was returned to Boeing and stored in Las Vegas. In 1984 I flew it to Paine Field for delivery to Virgin Atlantic. It was a rather memorable flight as passing thru FL250 the Captain's side window delaminated (the proverbial shotgun blast) and scared the **** out of me and the performance engineer sitting behind me (Phil Condit's future 4th wife). Have the window hanging on a wall at home.

That was probably LV-MLO which was delivered to AR in Dec 1978. Its career is described on this thread. The first ever 747 delivered to AR was LV-LZD, in Dec 1976 and which was returned to Boeing in 1982 as part payment for an order of 6 more modern JT9D-7Q powered 747-287Bs.

Towards 1998 LV-MLO was in the twilight of its career, having been retired in 2001.

You probably landed at Ushuaia's old airport which was a sight to behold. Only the 737-200 was certified to land there with a special procedure developed by AR abs Boeing. Not long after a new airport was opened, capable to handle all types of aircraft.

The first 747 ever on AR fleet was LV-LZD (747-287B/LN 274), delivered to AR on Dec/1976, returned to Boeing in Jan 1982, sold to VS in Jun 1984 finishing it's life serving in N9 since Dec 2001 till 2008, when stored at VCV.

Slightly OT, but a treat for me in April 1996 was flying on an AR 747-200 (LV-OPA) from Iguazu (IGR) to EZE. A domestic flight of just 670 miles.

The AKL and SYD flights only stopped at Rio Gallegos on the westbound leg. For a short time it only went as far as AKL then SYD passengers took Ansett for the Tasman hop. I did this in 1996.

When the A340 took over the Rio Gallegos stop ceased. In 2012 they dropped AKL and went nonstop to SYD. I did this in 2012. A long flight on a clapped out A340. Ended Australia not long after which was sad considering how long they'd flown the route.
