Delta MCO-GRU ending?

Fri Oct 19, 2018 3:57 am

After doing some “fake” book, I discovered that MCO-GRU on delta wasn’t bookable after March 10th. The route isn’t seasonal, so is it ending? I haven’t heard anything, som just curious. Let me know what you all think.

Looks like it, my friend who works for DL at MCO seems shocked as DL just hired a bunch of Portuguese speaker specifically for the GRU flight.

I was talking with a gate agent in MCO the other day and he also mentioned the rumor is that MCO-GRU is indeed ending.

It also appears that the DTW to GRU flight is ending the same day as well.

I thought DL had some low cost maintenance work that occurred in GRU, where basically DL did a utilization flight overnight to GRU, parked the plane for the day in GRU and did some maintenance work on the frame, and then sent it back north on utilization flying overnight again. I could be mistaken on that.

Were they hired for MCO-GRU, or for BOS-LIS, in the company's mind?

Such marginal flying tips to loss-making as the price of fuel increases.

I am upset that Delta is ending the GRU route, However this gives Delta the opportunity to utilize the JV with Delta and GOL. I think Delta agents will be working those flights since it's very common that Delta agents run JV flights. Now, all we need is for AM to move over to AS/4 In Delta will have a pretty good focus city operation going on. Need a few more p2p.

A long haul flight, full of tourist heading to the rat trap could not have been a pot of gold. Let the Brazilian airlines handle that traffic, they have the point of sale advantage anyways.

In Delta's earning, Latin America was the only negative performer, so maybe they are trimming some bad routes.

Perhaps they are moving the frame to Detroit to operate DTW-MAN on the days it isn't operating to GRU from Detroit.

Makes more sense to connect everyone through ATL or with G3. Ironically enough I'm currently interviewing for a Portuguese FA position, but I assume that's more for LIS and JFK/GRU, ATL-GRU/GIG

It's not, it just that DTW-GRU isn't daily and is flown only a few days of the week. He's probably just looking at a date it wasn't operating anyway.

That's what I thought. It's been only a few times per week for a while now; I figured he would've known that!

If you don't understand that MCO is a "major city" (whatever that is) for DL, you aren't in a position to dismiss that possibility.

As an Orlando local, I would be pissed about this except for the fact that I could never afford to fly it since prices were astronomically high. I can assure you that of all the reasons DL decided to end this, money was not one of them.

Also, the fact that they added MCO-AMS fairly recently does make this easier to swallow.

Not really. MCO used to be a much larger station for Delta. They pretty much had the entire airside to themselves. They allowed the LCC's to take away their market share.

They never had problem with loads, average of 88% for JAN-AUG 2018.

Market is heavily BR point of sale and the lower than expected recovery of Brazilian economy, BRL devaluation and higher fuel costs lead DL to use these aircrafts elsewhere.

Ah, grand.

Here are some revenue numbers for those "not major" cities next to smaller hubs. Obviously, these will have changed somewhat, but only in a direction which supports my point. I welcome more recent data if folks have a public source.

DL 2015 Top US Markets by O&D Revenue
9. MCO - $406.7M
10. SEA - $401.4M
14. CVG - $265.9M
15. TPA - $245.9M
16. FLL - $245.5M
20. RDU - $233.1M
40. AUS - $132.0M

The Latin American carriers are naturally going to have better brand awareness in their respective countries, and AA and UA’s Latin American gateways have better O&D demand in addition to connecting traffic.

I'm hoping DTW-GRU sticks around (although since it's just 3x weekly I also wouldn't be surprised to see it go...), but it makes sense to me that MCO-GRU is ending. By dropping this route, DL gets two 763 frames back to use on stronger transatlantic routes (e.g. the recently announced upgauge of BOS-DUB). MCO-GRU would really need to be a star performer to outweigh the benefit of serving the MCO-Brazil market via GOL and via DL's own connections over nearby ATL.

Just because DL makes a lot of revenue in MCO let's not assume automatically that there is profit from it.

The Brazilian announcement said DL was committed to serving Brazil from Atlanta, JFK and Detroit.

If the MCO operation wasn't profitable, it wouldn't be so large, and DL would not be experimenting with routes like MCO-GRU. Is "just because they make a lot of revenue" the new a.net armchair version of "load factor =/= yield"?

Too much capacity BR-US these days ! American started to balance and now Delta. Surprised that the Brazilian airlines remain adding services even with negative finances.

https://www.panrotas.com.br/aviacao/emp ... 59689.html

"Delta to suspend its direct flight between Orlando and Sao Paulo effective March 11, 2019. To consider a route to be dropped, the airline takes into consideration multiple factors such as route profitability which, in this case, does not present positive numbers, neither perspective of improvement in the near future", clarifies in an official release.

"Delta is committed to the Brazilian Market, with its partner Gol will continue to serve Sao Paulo from its hubs in Atlanta, Detroit and New York-JFK and to Rio de Janeiro from Atlanta. Customers which has been affected will be relocated in another Delta flights."
