Interior pics of Delta's first A220-100

Mon Oct 15, 2018 8:37 pm

This site has some interior pics of the first A220-100 for DL as well as some trivial facts about it.

That is one sexy airplane. I have a feeling I'll end up on a few as more enter service depending on what additional routes out of NYC they're placed on.

Very nice plane always wonder if DL will get creative with this plane and fly some special configuration (High J or All J) on some longer haul routes.. Cannot wait until this plane is put on the LGA-BNA route eventually.

You can see the larger F seats offset in the first pic, they are 2-2 by the looks of it.

A220 if pushed, it can fly transcons, Hope to see Delta do that one day, if not use these planes (especially if they top up with the A220-300) to add second daily flights to SAL, GUA, SJO, TGU, from ATL and LAX.

A220s will more likely be subbing for CR9/E75s, which themselves will go into service on CR2 routes. Some of the first routes announced have heavy E75/CR9 rotations today.

Actually, the A220-300 is an excellent MD-80 replacement. The A229-100 (rumor only the first 25, but I hope for more) is a bridge size. Initial will be upgauge.

Sad these weren't available earlier.

I suspect once the A220-100 is proven it will be time to replace the 717s. :flamed:

Looks like they opted for the B/E Aerospace Pinnacle seat. The reason why the screens look so square is that there's a charging port located right below the screen, and that takes up some space so it looks like a 4:3 aspect ratio screen.

I thought these planes were going to have the special tablets as the main IFE? Looks like they have the exact same in-seat PTVs as the majority of the fleet based off of those images.

Both inside and out it looks a whole lot like a refurbished Delta 757 that got left in the dryer too long. That's a very good thing.

If the aircraft proves reliable (the only real question left) there could eventually be a role for more than 200 of them in the fleet. Or, should Airbus ever build an A220-500, many more than that.

NOT a fan of the cheesy, bean counter driven visual cabin divider. Bring back the hard wall and make F respectable again!

Delta got the small engines. I wonder how much that will shorten the range?

Delta purchased low weight, low thrust airplanes with range limitations in the purchase agreement. If Delta chooses to fly longer routes it will have to pay substantially more. It’s one reason the planes were so cheap.

I agree that they look cheesy, until you sit in that first row of Economy. I feel like you get more legroom in those seats than in First Class

I thought it was established in the other DL A220 thread that the range limit went away.

I thought it was established in the other DL A220 thread that the range limit went away.

It was previously established they ordered a low MTOW and reduced fuel allowed loaded. I assume less thrust too. These are controlled by dongles. At the price DL paid, nothing more will be free.

Everything is a paper/dongle upgrade, but these things are tightly controlled.

For DL, it will allow DTW to the whole USA. Probably 2500nm still air range, down from 3,100nm. That is sufficient. Maintenance intervals will be extended, ATC fees off a lower MTOW.

There is no range limit, but Bombardier does limit fuel loaded by the dongle purchased.

I believe that several manufacturers allow you to ‘de-rate’ the engine. It’s still the standard engine but performance is restricted or more economical. I’m not an expert but it probably means longer take offs and that it will be unlikely that the aircraft will show up at airports like EYW or SNA.

The IFE here is GoGo vision touch - exactly what you described. It's basically a wireless system consisting of tablets, with a USB and headphone jack located immediately underneath.

Here's a video of the product during testing.

One more thing, these seats aren't wider than any other main cabin seat in DL's fleet. It's the same B/E Aerospace Pinnacle on the A320 family and new 777s, at 18.5 inches wide. Though they are still considerably wider than the seats on the Boeing fleet at 17". It also doesn't look like they opted for the wider middle seat, instead spreading a little more width over all five seats in the row.

These are 18.6, so yes technically they are wider. They A320 has 18.0" seats. Pinnacles come in varying widths.

No instead all seats are spread across the same based on the statement that all seats are 18.6".

Since it's a 2-3 seat layout, the DC-9 look is unavoidable. While I agree that a series of 70s-style "pit groups" comprised of L-shaped sectional sofas arranged around faux suspended fireplaces flanked by narrow floor-to-ceiling windows would have been undeniably cooler, that layout is not very spacially efficient and would have presented major challenges for certification during high-G landings.

I believe they have to take 35 A220-100s.

I wonder if and when the 717 replacement comes, whether they go for 221s or 223s? Will scope relief still be an issue a decade from now?

This is what I imagined IFE would look like in the future.

All the benefits of having a seat back mounted system, and you also get the benefits of having a streaming based system.

This is a great compromise.

I can’t wait to try out this beauty! Those eye level windows are to die for coming from usually flying 737’s.

I thought there already was an implementation of wireless based seatback IFE. On Sam Chui's PAL A350 review it shows someone removing a seatback tablet and placing another one in its place. Also I read somewhere on RGN that Lufthansa has bragged about installing Zodiac RAVE on its Airbus fleet which supposedly is a streaming based seatback IFE solution.

If the A220 series for DL come with engines for 2500nm, I just checked and it seems the A221 can make it to GUA (2192nm) and SAL(2303nm) from LAX. They'll only need to fuel up at GUA or SAL if DL ever considered using these birds for International flights for Mexico and upper Central America from LAX.

RAVE is a fantastic system, but it's still wired. Each display works like a tablet and self-contained units. A large portion of the movie catalog is stored locally, improving performance and reliability. Content is delivered to the displays via a wired connection.

What's unique about Gogo Vision Touch is that it is truly wireless. The tablets are consumer-grade tablets that are simply provided a power supply and stream content wirelessly. One would hope some content is stored locally as well to reduce the burden on the wireless network.

The argument for years has been that you can't cram that many wireless-enabled devices, along with passenger devices, and not have RF interference issues. Additionally, the redundancy built into the major IFE systems make them highly-reliable. We're all eagerly waiting to see if Gogo and Delta Flight Products (an equally interesting part of this story) have pulled this off successfully.

Er yes and no.

Its all the same engine is true but Pratt offers a few different thrust options. IIRC its ~20K, ~22K and ~24 or ~25K. Delta went with the ~22K engines.

What would be the reason(s) for Delta to choose an engine whose performance is "restricted"? Is this the same engine type that AirBaltic has needed to frequently change? What thrust version are the other A220 customers currently using?

Lower price of the jets, and lower operating/maintenance costs for Delta. They don't want to pay for "too much airplane."

Yeah, well, minus also the terrible noise of those old Pratts (..don't get me wrong, I love the DC-9, but frankly...), minus the very dry air, minus the small windows, the rough ride in turbulence, the small bins, the noisy air packs... I could go on..

I don't know what people like usdcaguy are really on to.. what were they expecting, lounge sofas and lava lamps?

Would it not be cheaper to just supply in-flight internet access, USB charging ports and let the passengers use their own devices?

That is one really nice interior. :cloudnine:

At least from the look... But it's horrible! :vomit:

Having flown on swiss A220's I hope DL is doing a better job! Maybe LX A220's are first production a/c, I have never seen such bad quality - the ceiling were not fitting resulting in huge gaps (seeing the insulating), many broken parts etc.! Worst to come are the overhead bins, opening downwards (not up!) having seen many people hitting their heads (on the 2seater side). LX is now closing the bins for boarding and doing endless announcements like "mind your head" or "please don't leave the bins open"...

Finally, a fit replacement for the MDs.

:flamed:

Lightsaber

Look at the first ~ten routes announced and the aircraft on those routes today that are being displaced. It's not a bunch of MD-88s, lightsaber.

I like it for the same reason I like the DC-9/MD-80/717 and 767. When I travel with my wife one can have the window, one can have the aisle and no stranger is in between.

Other than that the cabin isn't all that exciting. Seat pitch is much more important than an extra .5" to 1.5" of width for my comfort so that part isn't very exciting to me.

I believe it's majority if not all 31 inches of pitch which is reasonable. These also aren't DL approved photos. Delta has a different lighting standard. Other than that it is Delta's standard interior. I am sure with all the court battles and bickering even if DL wanted to change the interior the timing could have made them limited in options, as it was unknown if the aircraft was really coming. Also do you not like Delta's interior period or were you expecting more? Delta seats also appear more comfortable than the previous operators (atleast swiss). What seat is swiss using it looks like a slim line seat.

What would be the reason(s) for Delta to choose an engine whose performance is "restricted"?

Lower price of the jets, and lower operating/maintenance costs for Delta. They don't want to pay for "too much airplane."

People were amazed on the other thread that airBaltic has done 50 engine changes. By 1) getting later engines, and 2) running them derated, Delta no doubt hopes to get more life between engine changes, more "life on the wing." They tripled down by becoming a PW engine shop.

A220 if pushed, it can fly transcons, Hope to see Delta do that one day, if not use these planes (especially if they top up with the A220-300) to add second daily flights to SAL, GUA, SJO, TGU, from ATL and LAX.

You don't have to push it to do TCON. The -100 has the range of a 738, and the -300 of a MAX 10, so it can easily do TCON
