First plane painted in Sun Country’s new livery

Wed Oct 10, 2018 11:11 pm

Just found this photo today. I personally think it looks pretty good.

They sure nailed the look of "low cost vacation package".

To me, the front and the back seem like two separate liveries. I genuinely don't know whether I like this or not.

Eh, I think they killed a good livery, but I said that for AC too...

Something is super awkward about it. I don't know if the orange should have swooped back up over the knocked out white text. I think it probably would have looked better if the blue/orange line remained at the bottom and carried along the belly to the nose. Then maybe "sun" written in orange and "country" in blue above.

I thought a different version was selected by SY employees as the winner? Oh well, at least it ain't another example of a Eurowhite scheme. It really does look like two halves of two different planes.

Well, it is the one employees selected but something about it does look off. I think the new font was always going to be at odd with the rest of the design, everything else is pretty nice though.

Gee that's the same photo I saw yesterday. Folks will complain about it like all the other airlines, that have come out the last couple of years. ITs WAY BETTER then the current UAL

I think this was their best looking livery. The dark blue fuselage with the orange and sky blue insignias really contrast nicely.

I think the concept looked better than reality. It's not terrible, but it's a far cry from their previous liveries.

The S on the tail and the s in the “sun country” are two different fonts. It looks cheap

The orange swoop is ok but, right, it looks like two different schemes. They should have changed the tail, too. It looks like one of those European planes that's on seasonal lease to an airline on the other side of the planet.

The tail sticks out like a sore thumb. It does not match the rest of the livery at all and it's very bothersome. This is definitely a step backwards from the current livery.

Well it is different, I like you, I don't know if I will like it or not, but after awhile I will get used to it. It's still better than their original livery.

That white space behind the wing is what makes it look so awkward. Definitely a downgrade from the current livery.

Still more interesting than most liveries out there, but it is very hard to beat their 1999-2015 livery. I may be bias as SY is my favorite airline having spent summers growing up in MSP and watching the DC-10s and 727s come and go, but that has got to be one of the sharpest liveries out there, in any country. But if they want to transform from an LCC with Midwestern hospitality and good service to a bare bones ULCC, this livery abides. much like the Spirit yellow buses.

Not bad at all, as others have said it's much better than many major airlines and very fitting for a LCC. Well done SY!

Im getting a WN-esque or euro-LCC vibe from it. There is just way too much orange. Im not sure what they're trying to project with this livery but I'd say sophistication is not it.

The blue engines and the tail section remind me of the current Aeroflot livery.
The orange part at the front makes it look like a big logojet of some company... maybe Nickelodeon? hahaha

Indeed, the front and aft are totally different, like two different liveries. CatDog style.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with their all-bue livery. I don't understand the change.

Out of the four options they put up to vote I thought what they went with was the best. I like it, I didn't think they originally livery needed to be refreshed but they killed it when they went to the small title font on the forward fuselage. So albeit the new livery is odd it'll grow on me. I hope they paint their remaining -700 in it if they're still planning on keeping one or two

I dont like it. I preferrred C. The orange looks worse in reality than in the concept. Going to miss their former livery.

Sorry this looks absolutely terrible. They had no reason to even change their livery. I wouldn’t be surprised if they scrap this after how this turned out.

Awkward, uneven & to many color mixes that make the tail cluttered and hard to read.

It's the font of the main titles. They're completely incongruous with the rest of it. Weird outcome.

1 down, 24 to go! Not surprised to see all the negative comments. Pretty typical for a new livery thread. :stirthepot: While options C and D were my favorites, It is not horrible. I would like to see them do one plane in their old white/orange livery.

The changeover to an all economy class ULCC carrier formally occurs on November 1st. It will be some time before we have information as to gauge the success or failure of SY’s new business model. SY has already begun to add more routes and planes. A goal stated by the CEO is to grow the carrier with focus cities (mini hubs?) instead of solely relying on their home base of MSP.

My personal opinion is that they will have a tough go of it. In the ULCC category, you have Spirit, Allegiant, Frontier and Southwest (some opinions are that SWA has grown out of that category). SY being the newest, smallest kid on the playground will make them a target for those other carriers. Allegiant currently is the only carrier that doesn’t serve MSP. JetBlue began service at MSP this past May and from a few people I know who were hired for their entrance into the market, they are meeting expectations and are looking ahead at offering more routes to/from MSP. There’s also Delta to consider. Like Northwest before their merger, NWA would sporadically harass SY on competing routes and there was really nothing they could do to fight back.

The self induced bad publicity that SY endured during the first half of 2018 has subsided, but it doesn’t take much of an incident to land on the front page of the local paper and on social media, so if they have issues after their launch, it will be just one more hurdle to overcome. From a local perspective, they had a very loyal crowd of regular first class fliers, myself among them, who just blistered the carrier on their Facebook page after the news was released about the elimination of first class and the introduction of a baggage fee schedule.

The ULCC passenger pie is only so big and can be divided up in just so many portions. Much will depend on how willing is the new owner to invest the money required and for how long of a period of time. One thing not under any carrier’s control are fuel prices.

The plane shown is really number 26...N830SY. with 831SY still to arrive SY added/will add, 8 aircraft this year. The last 6 delivered will be the last to get the new paint, as they are the "newest" planes. SY will stop selling F/C on Nov 1st. most of the planes will still have F/C until they receive the new seating. This process will start sometime in Nov. I have not heard a time line yet. 830/831SY will have the new seating installed when they arrive from AAR in RFD.

I think it looks pretty decent. A step down from their old livery with the fancy light blue compass on the fuselage. But I think it will work, I like the tail staying the same but think they could have added more to the fuselage.

What aircraft is this? When is it being delivered?
