This is what I think:
- I think that they would have bought a handful more of those by the early to mid 90s.
- For sure the initial batch of 757-225s that were bought back in the 80s when the airplane was all new would be scrapped by now.
- For sure the 757 fleet would have grown to over 40 units at its peak, if not more. Remember they had 27 of them when they were in business.
- Eastern's two major hubs were MIA and ATL. They could have, if Frank Lorenzo didn't screw it up, opened a mini hub or focus city in BOS, JFK or PHL and start flights to Western Europe (DUB, LGW, AMS,...you name it) with Boeing 757 aircraft from one of the three airports I mention. Sure there would still be a 757 base in MIA and ATL but only for domestic flights, and maybe Canada, but no flights to Europe with the 757 from these two major hubs.
- Depending on their "health" they would have bought additional 757s by the late 90s and upgraded them with new EFIS, and its 757 fleet would have grown even more. Had that happened yes they would still be flying the 757 by now because the youngest one would still be under 20 years old. Of course by now they would be on the way out and be replaced with 787s, 737MAX or A321NEOs.
So in summary yes they would still be flying it if they had bought a large fleet of those during the 90s. The retirement of those would have been planned for the early 2020s.
I'm sorry but I don't understand the point of this post. I thought that the forum was about factual news, not about some speculations. Like who cares - Eastern went bankrupt because of bad management. Move on.

That brings up another point. If EA labor relations were not so poisonous, I suspect CO and EA would have been merged into a single larger carrier during the 90s, or at latest post 9/11 as part of broader industry consolidation.
