Lufthansa 747 over North Korea?

Thu Oct 04, 2018 11:12 pm

I was browsing a website and found the FR24 tracks of LH740 (FRA-KIX) flying over North Korea. Now I know that FR24 shows those dashed lines when their receivers lose contact and but in this case it seems the 747 really flew over NK. Their is a solid line and the altitude and speed slightly deviate during playback.

I was under the impression that NK airspace wasn't used by most airlines (apart from those few flights to FNJ), it seems I am wrong?

I've noticed that Finnair occasionally flies over that part of North Korea as well.

Honestly, it's probably more dangerous to fly over parts of eastern Ukraine than North Korea.

Twice now I have looked at http://www.flightradar24.com at approximately 12-hour intervals, and both times there is nothing headed for or crossing over the DPRK:

I would imagine that a calculation involving winds, fuel burn, and time saved must be involved in any decision to fly over North Korea, and the company manual would require a certain combination of factors before implementing that route.

Even today DLH740 took this airway. There are no NOTAMs forbidding to use it and it is normal airway (R224).

If DLH can overfly North Korea, then I don't see any issue with this. On contrary, it saves fuel making good for the environment.

Does North Korea have an airspace or ATC fee?

Does North Korea have an airspace or ATC fee?

Second does DPRK have radar or is it all position reporting?
