Similarities between San Diego and Kai Tak

Thu Aug 30, 2018 3:05 pm

On a recent visit to SAN, I was surprised by the similarities between the approach at SAN and that of Kai Tak. Barring the checkerboard turn to final, the similarities are striking. Both are very congested, single runway airports with an approach over low terrain and in close proximity to buildings as well as a displaced threshold due to the immediate hillside and descent down to the runway. Are they as similar as they appear? The approach definitely appears to feel similar for the last minute or so although I haven’t flown into Kai Tak myself.

The approach path to SAN are, at least, lined up straight in rather than a sharp turn at low altitude. To make it more “Kai Tak like”; fly the approach to SAN, circle at 400’ to NAS North Island at night in a heavy C-5.

You can get sweet and sour pork at both places

If LGA had some terrain then I'd say the Expressway Visual to Runway 31 was probably the most Kai Tak like, but alas, it's flat until you head north of The Bronx. There's also the rare visual approach to runway 13 there that is quite difficult to maneuver as well. But again, no terrain.

If you put Mt. Helix in the middle of Balboa Park and put a big checkerboard on it, it might resemble Kai Tak.

I suggest you google “visual approach san diego rwy 27”. It’s a straight shot. The only annoyance is that building as you cross I5.

You did say "barring the late turn to final". But, that was probably the crowning characteristic that made it such a challenging approach.

But outside of that, yeah kind of, I guess. Did Kai Tak have a parking garage short final?

Been decade or more since I've flown into SAN.. is that parking garage just beyond the runway fence
and centerline still there?
