Zero percent change of happening, too many reasons to even mention all of them.
Have you seen how dense this area is, it would be billions to build just the high speed rail part thru NYC alone. The map looks close but so much EWR/NYC airport traffic comes from NY State and Connecticut they would be way too far from this new airport. No one has the money to build this: NJ already has way too much debt to handle, the feds forget about it too much debt.
They will work on improvements to existing facilities that is the only realistic option.
If you live in Long Island or Connecticut how will you get to this airport? We don't build true high speed rail in this country, not even worth out time to discuss an airport so far away. SWF would be the airport to link to high speed rail its ready to go, and would be way easier to build and they can't even do that.
I don't agree, I think a high speed rail line to Stewart can easily be done. Most of it is already there, despite the fact that it's a single non-electrified track but it can be upgraded. No doubt they can do that if they want to.
Improving existing facilities comes with lots of limitations and the biggest limitation is perhaps the location, all New York airports are located far too close to the city center. However this comes with an advantage that the ground that these airports sit on is extremely expensive. If you could sell that ground at market price you'd make a lot of money. More than enough to cover the expenses of a high speed train line to Stewart and even for the expansion of that airport.
Others have already compared the situation to Tokyo Haneda / Narita. In New York you could close and sell Newark and LaGuardia for it's land value, giving JFK the role of a city airport like Haneda. Stewart could be expanded to become a big distant airport like Narita. With a high speed rail connection, financed by the land value of Newark and LaGuardia, it sounds like a plan to me.NotDengXiaoping wrote:So if this were less of a replacement for LGA and EWR and more of a Narita-style airport with connections to the NYC area, what airlines would it serve? Low cost long haul?
If at the same time you'd close or highly limit the current New York airports airlines currently flying there would be forced to move over. No question if they like it, you just don't give them a choice. It's move or leave, they can't stay where they are. That option doesn't exist.
High speed on the rail that heads up to Stewart isn't an option because of physical geography.
Same reason it won't happen in Connecticut.
