Air Europa adds Madrid-Panamá

Thu Aug 16, 2018 7:28 am

Five weekly flights starting February 2019.

https://www.routesonline.com/news/38/ai ... -feb-2019/

Skyteam member Air Europa in the first quarter of 2019 plans to launch Madrid – Panama City route, on board Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. From 25FEB19, the airline will operate this route 5 times a week.

UX019 MAD1505 – 1940PTY 788 x46
UX020 PTY2140 – 1315+1MAD 788 x46

Coupled to Iberia's daily flight, MAD-PTY will be 12 weekly, making it the busiest European route out of PTY by far.

This is what IAG get with their ultra conservative strategy that does not allow them to grow and develop markets properly. IBERIA should have started a second frequency ages ago. But of course, they have no spare planes to work with.

Great news for Panama. Hopefully other new destinations will follow.

I think IB was very happy being the only operator in the route and maybe adding freqs would have reduced the yields, it is also true that in IB don't have enough planes, IB is not very experimental in new routes, they really take time to open up new markets, I think IB could have more presence in some markets like West Africa, where geographical location of MAD is quite good for most West Africa to Europe or USA flights.

Not long ago it was 3 weekly via somewhere in central america, So it's a big development for the market. Does Copa codeshare with IB or UX for the MAD-PTY flights??

And the most impressive is that this route does not make it an Airbus A340-600, I hope that iberia increases capacity with the arrival of the new A350, and very soon that Air Europa increases this route with daily flights quickly

Yes COPA codeshares with Iberia in PTY-MAD, and IB in some Copa destinations out of PTY to Central America.

IMO 5 weekly for UX is quite a lot if they don't get COPA feed. Specially since their network out of Madrid is much smaller than Iberia's.

So I wonder if UX will also codeshare with COPA despite UX being IB's competitor. I think Czech Airlines codeshares with both Air Europa and Iberia in MAD-PRG.

Btw this how IB and UX flights fit. They have about three hours difference so Copa could feed different waves of flights and they are not strictly competing with each other for connections on PTY. I am pretty sure COPA would love more feed into their flights from whoever it comes from!

IB6339 MAD1150 – 1645PTY 330 D
UX019 MAD1505 – 1940PTY 788 x46

IB6346 PTY1815 – 1020+1MAD 330 D
UX020 PTY2140 – 1315+1MAD 788 x46

Great news for Panama. I believe that a codeshare with CM would be key in this case. It is not unique: UX partners with Avianca Brasil at GRU instead of Gol that is preferred by SkyTeam members AZ, AF and KL.

Speaking on which I wonder why is UX taking so long to open MAD-GIG. IB does not pose the competition it does at PTY and the market is there.

Not sure there is a market for a 2nd carrier in GIG. GIG is not a business market (like GRU) and Brazil is a Portuguese-speaking country, so links to Spain are much fewer than to any Spanish-speaking capital like Panamá. Probably there are fewer links between Rio and Madrid than between Rio and Paris (given AF is quite big in GIG). I think at some point GIG was not even daily in IB (not sure if they are back to daily now).

From what I know this Ryanair thing is not working at the moment. Air Europa long-haul does not feed yet those flights in MAD.

Congratulations to PTY! Second city for UX in Central America. The weekly frequency to SAP works great (a much smaller market that doesn't need that much flights), so if they want the same kind of success in PTY with 5 weekly, they should find some sort of deal with CM for codesharing to SJO, MGA, and secondary Colombia as UX flights already to BOG and CLO, CTG and MDE are covered by IB and AV.

without COPA feed, this is going to be a very hard flight to fill. There is a lot of competition and the O&D market is not that big. LH, AF, KL, TK, IB all need COPA feed to make their respective flights work and some would argue that some of those flight don't (cough cough TK cough cough). We watched EK implode quickly when it didn't have that COPA feed set up to fill the plane. TP had feed and it still failed. UX would have been better off working to slowly grow SAP (maybe combining it with another destination on other days). IIRC they couldn't get MEX to work and that is huge Spain market compared to PTY.

I wish them all the luck in the world on this if they decide to go it alone.

PTY (+CM) wished BCN but got more MAD.
The extra MAD-PTY demand was there for IB to grab, it did not react on time and UX saw the opportunity and grabbed it.
Best for UX, IB and CM is to try to separate as much as possible their PTY times.

IB could have taken the MGA capacity they just pulled and added an extra 3Xweek PTY

Iberia did operate triangular routes touching Panama City, but it was 10 years ago roughly.
IB MAD-GUA-PTY-MAD
IB MAD-SJO-PTY-MAD

Update: IB MAD-GUA-SAL-PTY started in 2010. As a result, IB MAD-PTY became a non-stop flight.

There were talks about Air Europa in Panama City when Copa Airlines belonged to SkyTeam group, 10 years ago or so.
The possibility of mutual code-share services was strong, in those days.
However, the project never came into fruition.

Regards.
