United updating brand with new colors

Thu Aug 09, 2018 9:37 pm

United Airlines’ signature “Rhapsody Blue” color is about to get some company.

United is adding a set of new hues to its color palette, an update to its branding that will soon be seen on new employee uniforms, airport facilities and aircraft cabins.

Joining Rhapsody Blue – United’s well-known navy shade with a name inspired by the "Rhapsody in Blue" title that United has used as its theme song -– are several new additions. They’ll include United Blue, Pacific Blue, Premium Purple, Runway Gray, Sky Blue and Atlantic Amethyst.

Some of these changes such as purple shade has already been seen on the new Premium Economy seats.

Interesting. Most of the colors seem fine. Looks like they're fully shoving any gold/yellow in the trash, I guess?

Will this lead to a new livery?

Feels like an evolution, which is a good thing. I think when they eventually update their livery, it'll be a fresh take on what exists already, which is probably the way to go. I think it's possible for the globe to look good if treated carefully.

Interesting that they're also adding purple to the color palette, albeit as more of an accent color. I certainly think this is a good idea. Just a bit of color here and there can go a long way to livening up an otherwise drab look.

Odd they are announcing new colors without showing how they will be used.

I like the palette but still miss the premerger UA livery :( Hopefully they will end up with something better.

Actually take a look at reply #6. It gives a bit of a hint as to how the colors will be used. It's not much, but it'll give you a bit of an idea.

Agree!! Too phew colours that are cold can create a clinical atmosphere purple will warm up some elements of the UA brand.

No matter how much rebranding they do, as long as OM is their CEO and UA has that PR, they aint going nowhere.

There is no way United based purple off of Delta. Things like this are developed over years, not on whims.

I'm curious why they are changing colors everywhere except their horribly outdated and now notorious 1990's Continental paint scheme/logo?

With MAX 9s being delivered currently, along with the 78Js later this year, why would UA not update their livery now? Of course the idea or thought of an updated livery is all general assumption from this public release of new colors for their brand. Funny enough.. This reminds me of the repainting process during the merger. Remember how many sUA 752’s were repainted into the globe only to be shortly retired after? My point being is that with the airline industry being so focused on saving costs whenever and wherever they can, how is taking new aircraft only to be repainted shortly after an economically wise choice?

I honestly don't see anything wrong with DL's livery. UA's may require some sprucing up, but nothing as drastic as a livery change.

Somewhat on the same note, I saw that United is now using a different font for its registration numbers on both newly delivered and repainted aircraft. Is this related? Also, I saw a post on Instagram that said that United made some "subtle changes" to the globe... though I couldn't see any difference.

The decision to include purple (and the other colors) is literally a years-long project. As noted, Premium Plus already wears the purple color. This has absolutely zero to do with Delta.

I'm not seeing it...can you provide specific comparison examples? For example, I looked at photos of a couple 737 Max of UA and the registration font looks the same as other older types.

Thanks

Delta introduced purple nearly two years ago. I
Also think the ‘globe’ pattern they use on the Polaris table cloth and dish ware look very cheap; you would never see that in a five star restaurant. I just don’t see or get ‘who’ United is trying to be.

I hate to post this here because the new United livery question/debate happens every few months but someone who I really trust at United told me a new livery is coming that has been in development since last year. He was part of two feedback/viewing groups that had to sign NDA. He said at the time the goal was to have it out in October when both FA groups come together and kick off the new United. Coming from a stranger online you should take this as a grain of salt however he and I go way back and I have zero reason to think he would be toying with me over it. The only thing would be if their plans had changed since then.

Agree with the table cloth and linen! That dark blue, so they still use glass crockery? Looks horrificly cheap, and dated. A light grey or white is really only acceptable colours for table linen.

Can I ask, is the 787 style UA livery with the swoosh style cheatline being applied to any other fleet? A subtle but modern change.

When are the new uniforms due to be revealed? Must be soon for a 2020 rollout? 6-12month lead time for fittings and wear test seem reasonable.

Hey guys,
I applaud the tinkering with the colour palette but agree with many upthread that a new livery is needed. I love the colour purple and wish it could be used somehow with rhapsody blue (and maybe gold, but silver would look better In my opinion) for a new livery.
I loved the last United blue tulip livery.... One of my all time favourites.
Cheers

It's so interesting to me that when one airline does one thing (purple á la Delta), others follow suit. So now 2 of the US3 will have purple uniforms. Quite funny to me. Surely this is the result of some survey or study which shows people responding positively to the color purple? While I applaud UA for attempting a much needed rebrand, I can't help but feel like this is a Delta ripoff.

Ho-hum - another airline doing a completely unnecessary "makeover." Justifying someone's salary. Until they update the boring livery, none of this means anything to me.
