According to CH-Aviation (albeit behind a paywall), it is Air Austral who is negotiating a wet lease. https://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news ... -wet-lease. Their B77Ws are configured for 438 seats (J14W40Y384). I suspect that this will be used for "domestic" flights between Reunion and metropolitan France.

My unknowledgeable guess, UU and/or LX :
UU wet leasing one frame has to be for a small airline externalizing the risks in that handsome fashion.
LX because of the points in post 151

Air Austral ordered (probably Loi'd) the A380 in high density configuration some time ago but did not take delivery.

When do we anticipate the first revenue flight by HiFly? Sitting around waiting for months costs a lot of money and they have already missed the northern hemisphere summer.

Air Austral seems to be the taker with the lease beginning at the end of August as per Aero.de:
https://www.aero.de/news-29662/Air-Aust ... rtern.html
(link in German)
added French link, which is linked in the Aero article:

The French article states that the reason for this lease is the RR engine issues on their 787s. The A380 should come to them late august, and stay for a couple of weeks until the 787 that will be out of rotation will join the fleet again.

So if this turns out to be true it will be just a standard HiFly lease, a short term replacement for an aircraft that is out of service.

It could also be possible that this won't be the first customer, with another still unknown airline leasing it in the 1st couple of weeks of August??

This might also be a power by the hour lease, where Hi Fly only pays based on when it's in the air, and not parked at Beja.

Yapp, if you compare this to how they described their first A380-contract then this is a little bit ... well ... sobering?

Wow, so they still use it for this present summer vacation season.

CPH-LCA today and OSL-PMI tomorrow

Thomas Cook Scandinavia is still struggling with their operations and the chaos at RHO a few days ago, this they have to get some lift from Hi Fly

Does not sound as the kind of routes this aircraft was made for. More like it was the only thing we could get at the moment.

It speaks volumes that Tommy Cook is willing to shell out for the only available aircraft to bring their passengers back, and they are of course maximising the positive PR they can get from the probably not insignificant expenditure. Those passengers who will be rescued by the whale will probably take away a positive image of the airline, rather than what they would have otherwise been left with.

IAG could learn a thing or two.

Regarding the Asian airlines, I would say it has to be TG, unless SQ or OZ need it for some maintenance-related issue.

KE reported parking on of their A380s a few months ago, and they have 747s to fill in. SQ would have planned better than this. OZ already owns too many A380s.

BKK is massively over capacity so I could see TG wanting to manage that with larger planes but not wanting to buy more A380s. Plus, they have affected 787s that are probably make life a bit tough as the busy season approaches.

Hi-Fly must have a number of signed contracts in hand or at least a long-term one or I don't see how they would have jumped into acquiring an A380-
Same goes for the second frame.
Which also means that short-cycle legs need to be compensated with longer ones ( like EK or TG do ) or the frames will wear out fast.

Travel company Ving is also chartering the HiFly A380 this Thursday between Palma and Oslo.

The A380 will carry 238 pax OSL-PMI, and 403 pax PMI-OSL.

Wow, those poor pax are just going to be packed in there like sardines!

It's cool to see her making money with the new operator already, and equally amazing that Thomas Cook jumped on the opportunity to take care of their passengers.

I wonder what the logistics were like to get a crew together on next to zero notice for that flight? It's not like they were really expecting to be in the air that day was it? I can't imagine there are an over-abundance of 380 drivers / crew running around out there.

The configuration is 12 First / 60 Business / 399 Economy... I guess four passengers will have a big grin on their face... ;-)
As far as I know Thomas Cook does not have a proper business class.

Is that a joke or...? The A380 will provide an absolutely superior travel experience compared to any charter jet Thomas Cook uses.

No, but they have a 'premium' section. I'm guessing the 'premium' folks will be put in business on the A380. They might see it as a nice upgrade given the inconvenience of the interruption to their travel plans.

Which can be a double-edged sword with observative PAX who may flee any sardine cans thereafter, regardless of ticket fare.

These 2 emergency leases are probably the reason why HiFly didn't go for the Asian customer. I could see it do a lot more of this kind of flights before it will go to Air Austral at the end of the month.

Yes, HiFly posted a lot of pictures on their Facebook.

And apart from the logo's it's exactly the same interior as a Singapore Airlines A380, so no surprises.

Majorca never gets anywhere near 47C....that's reserved for places like Sevilla and the surrounding areas.
Be interesting to see the turnaround times in PMI when the A380 starts.

Thank you!

I expected it to be the same SQ interior, but hadn't seen it! I'm sure either way it is an upgrade to a lot of customers taking charters/lccs.

A few years ago I saw a LH 380 taking off from PMI, quiet impressive. If I remember correctly they were doing short ops around Europe to promote the new aircraft type + train crews.

Thanks for your feedback. So the first class was empty, obviously. Seems a little bit inefficient to fly an empty first class cabin from A to B but I guess in these kind of „emergency flights“ it’s not so much about efficiency... (similar to an An124 you can lease for your freight).

I guess it is difficult to have the perfect configuration for every customer. If you equip only economy, or just a small premium section, you risk having to bump those well-paying premium pax to economy class. That's ok if you only substitute for Norwegian or Thomas Cook but not if you want legacy airlines as your customer.

N14AZ It’s an almost daily event for Emirates to operate the A380 in their network with FIRST closed off somewhere - in fact it’s quite frequent at places such as Birmingham UK to see these in lieu of the scheduled high density two clas versions.

On many of HiFly leases it quite probable the first suites will be closed off by the leasee imho.

It’s far from the end of the world and it’s only like twelve bath chairs not exactly and mass of capacity!

The lease rate are per frame and crew per hour anyway.

Hifly A380 operations thread

Thu Aug 02, 2018 11:54 am

A Hifly Airbus 380 landed on OSL today to bring charter tourists from Oslo to Mallorca / Majorca and back. It's the Norwegian charter tour agency Ving that has had trouble lately with passengers that has been delayed and gotten stuck, that has chartered the Hifly Airbus 380.

The flight has had to get special clearance to operate from the airport as the runway isn't really wide enough . The engines on the Airbus 380 hangs outside the runway. The airport did extra checks of the runway before and after landing.

Airbus 380 has been at OSL before for frost and cold testing, for promo and for medical diversions.

It's really great to see the aircraft doing business again.

Both the CPH-LCA, LCA-CPH flights seems to have went well. The aircraft repositioned CPH-OSL this morning, and left OSL for PMI just half an hour ago. Everything seems to go as planned. These initial operations means a lot for a small airline with a new aircraft type, especially when it's an A380.
