Aeroméxico E190 Accident in Durango July 31

Tue Jul 31, 2018 9:26 pm

Apparently just after take off from DGO bound for MEX. Not many details at this time.

Most probably an Embraer, either E170/E175/E190.

Aeromexico Crash

Tue Jul 31, 2018 9:32 pm

Aeromexico crashes after take off from Guadalupe Victoria Airport in Durango Mex. I would guess it's an Aeroconect Embraer 170 or 190 with a hundred people on board:

Tail looks intact. Maybe an overrun.

It’s an E190. Aeromexico has confirmed on Twitter they are aware of the incident. No reports on casualties or causes yet. Probably too early for he former and only speculation on the latter.

I wouldn't call this intact.

That plane will never fly again. It's totally wrecked.

Just hope for the best for everybody that was on board.

Concerning that the back right door doesn't appear to have been opened for use during evacuation. Hoping for the best!

Just seen a report saying 80 people injured. No idea how many onboard but that seems to indicate few or no fatalities which has got to be good hopefully.

He is correct. Tail does seem intact and could easily be an overrun. The rest of the plane isn’t obviously.

Confirmed as Aeromexico 2431 due to Mexico City.

E190. Capacity 99 + crew.

80 injuries. (Seems like everyone made it out alive currently.)

(Similar to AF at Toronto in how damaged and outcome. Looked terrible but everyone made it out first and then fire burnt the top off.)

Does that look like a trail of ripped up field/debris behind the main wreck in that video? Like it slid through the field for a while before stopping.

AM 2431 DGO-MEX XA-GAL E190

Apparently crashed on takeoff. Governor's office informed 80 pax have been / are being taken to nearby hospitals.
I've flown that bird. Yikes. Let's pray for no casualties. My thoughts go to passengers and friends who are pilots (including fellow a.nutter Ghost77) flight attendants in Aeromexico Connect.

In the video the aircraft appears to have turned 90 degrees from the end of the runway. Possibly weather related.

I wonder if this is a case of the takeoff being aborted after the decision speed (V1)?

Hoping it's like Air France 358, where it looks bad but everyone got off alive.

One of the articles mentioned 80 people on board while the other mentioned 101. We heard that about 80 people have been taken to hospitals, so hopefully if there were 101 the rest were not injured.

And now, Reuters is saying:

Shortly after taking off, the plane made an emergency landing about six miles (10 km) from the airport, Alejandro Cardoza, a spokesman for the state’s civil protection agency, said on local television.

Governor Jose Rosas Aispuro said on local television that the plane was bound for Mexico City.

“The plane was taking off,” said Rosas Aispuro, adding that witnesses told him there was “a bang” and then without warning the plane was on the ground.

This video seems to show a flattened trail leading back towards the runway and the aircraft sitting perpendicular to that trail. Looks more and more like an overrun. *edit Clearly not as it's too far from the airfield as pointed out below, thanks.

https://twitter.com/twitter/statuses/1024406042715668480

Early pictures/video look like they came to a stop relatively intact, and the aircraft was destroyed by the post accident fire.

Reports say that the crashing site is 10km away from the airport.

FlightAware right now shows "taxiing for takeoff/left terminal." Doesn't show that they got airborne. I know these things aren't always accurate, especially during incidents...

Recognition to the cabin crew for a successful evacuation - always easy to think of them as service personnel, but in times like this, they're a safety team all the way.

For what it's worth, some journalists have used language like "fell" and "went down". Which would suggest that it got airborne. I don't know whether to believe that or chalk it up to incompetent journalism, but accurate reporting would be nice.

From the pictures I've seen it was clearly an overrun after an aborted takeoff. The burned plane is after everyone was already safely off.

According to the Reuters link, the plane took off, and then very quickly made an emergency landing 10 km away from the airport (as reported by Alejandro Cardoza, a spokesman for a state agency). Emergency landing off a runway would cause a debris track that could look like an overrun.

If it does turn out to be the result of a RTO after V1, the captain is going to have to justify why he aborted the takeoff when he did. It has to be something pretty serious or extreme post V1 for a pilot to abort instead of continuing the takeoff when you get to that speed due to the risk of an overrun.

I wonder if this could be a case of a thunderstorm outflow boundary quickly changing the wind direction. The headwind or crosswind component quickly turning to a strong tailwind. DGO is a high altitude airport. While it has a 9500ft runway, with altitude and temperature that isnt all that long. Depending on the scenario, I could see a non V1 abort due to a sudden strong shear to a tailwind causing the overrun.

Everyone alive which is the best outcome.
While the plane is destroyed, I bet right after impact/stop it was fairly well intact, but burned up afterwards. Of course that is a guess. With everyone alive, though, I think it is a likely situation.
