UK, Luton Airport turns 80 !

Sat Jul 21, 2018 1:08 pm

An interesting piece, Luton Municipal Airport in Bedfordshire was opened in 1938 and renamed London Luton Airport in 1990.

And the airport layout has not been improved for many decades... a third world airport by most standards.

Depends what you mean by improved, I guess. There have been many changes in recent years and more to come. Very successful airport as far as number of flights and aircraft movements. I use it regularly and it is a place to catch planes ,no frills !

Not a flash airport any one that despite continued small expansions continues to bulge at the seams. It is however an effective airport and my first choice to fly from as it is an hour from wheels touching the runway to me going in my door. It can take that long to get out of Heathrow.

A jet-ways could come handy as a birthday gift.

Not sure - the LCC's like to load using front and rear stairs. Shortens turnaround time.

Its such an odd airport. Its layout is terrible, delays are always happening, dated buildings yet Easyjet and Wizzair make $$$ out of it and with 15million PAX a year its not doing badly considering its the "worst airport in the UK" for 5 years.

I remember when I was about 5 or 6 (1978 -79) we lived about 1/2 drive from the airport and my dad was going to take me to see the planes. Unfortunately the day he picked had either no or very few movements!

When was the last time you've been there? Surely not recently otherwise you'd have been aware of the massive overhaul it's currently undergoing.

It'll still be small and there still won't be jetways, but other than that it looks like a modern airport to me. As for jetways, most airlines serving Luton prefer not to use them anyway so why have them installed? About a decade ago Brussels airport even had the jetways removed from one of it's terminals to make it more suitable for LCCs.

Congratulations, Luton! As a spotter I like you, as a passenger not so much!

I went there last autumn and it just looks a large warehouse and construction site.
The bus stop there is tiny and lack of everything which makes the bus stop next to my home to be luxury
And shop option there is .......

Of course I see the operator is trying to improve the infrastructure but i probably wont go there again

The only time I've ever used a jetway on an LCC was Malaga, which was 35c. They have to pay more to use them and it effectively blocks the rear doors out.

I think they should restore that old Britannia that’s in the fire dump and make it a feature in /near the terminal

Not completely true. Most of my intra Europe Flights on Norwegian have used jetway for the front half of the plane and stairs for the aft half. As to the topic at hand though, good for Luton. But I personally avoid the place. It's at the very bottom of my list for greater London airports.

You are kidding right!

That derelict Britannia is way beyond restoration and where in fact do you propose to site it in/near the terminal?

And are you familiar with the layout of the CTA and the Terminal at LTN as there is absolutely no way an aircraft could be put on display let alone an old rusting hulk of a Britannia that has remained in its current position for over 30 years after last in service with the LTN Fire Department.

On a side note I have to absolutely agree with other posters comments regarding LTN airport it's an abysmal place and very third world even with the recent developments and in my opinion I find it a disgrace that it is allowed to use the name of London in it's title, I'd much prefer the airport to return to it's former name of Luton International Airport.
