Nigeria to launch new flag carrier Nigeria Air

Fri Jul 20, 2018 7:04 am

Nigerian government trying it again with a new carrier Nigeria Air. Apparently looking at China and India as possible target destinations.

I imagine scepticism is high understandably (after Virgin Nigeria, Air Nigeria ,Bellview, etc), but does anyone see potential?

Nigeria has a lot of oil money and high population. They could get two dozen A380s and make LOS the new DXB.

The government plans to hold no more than 5% equity and have leave decisions regarding the running of the company to the investors.

Which is exactly why Nigeria itself is poor. Those princes are now all dead and all those money are given away :white: :rotfl:

Why do I think this is another 404 scam?

Seriously, though, I hope they have studied the business models of Ethiopian and Air Kenya. Clearly those two have some management savvy in their corner. And a wealthy benefactor wouldn't hurt.

That'd be 419.

Anyhoo, people would be right to be skeptical but some projects across the country, especially those funded from abroad (China, UAE, India largely) have seen success and have thus far avoided embarrassment. This is still Africa's highest population and highest GDP country and has the ability (over time) to become world-class. I actually read about this in a local paper when I was in Abuja a couple weeks ago and was wondering why it hadn't been written about here yet. I'm hopeful for Nigeria--it's full of great people, resources, and the sights to make for a good destination, but it's a matter of changing much of the culture (bribes, corruption--bred by uncertainty and worker abuse). Good folks are trying but it will take a long time--maybe generations--to really transform the nation.

That said, do I think this project will "work?" Meh, history would indicate otherwise and I don't like the idea of the FG having any stake. One can hope, but without a lot of foreign investment to keep the integrity in check, I don't see it lasting.

Does anybody seriously believe that, without any investors (meaning $$$) yet, therefore no aircraft and no staff (which must be trained) that they'll SERIOUSLY launch this in a mere five and-a-half months???????????????

Being that it is a "Nigerian" carrier, the chances of any longevity so to speak is slim to none. Nigeria is a country with rampant corruption and nothing seems to last, I thought Arik Air would last, but reading these forums, their life is limited.
