Airbus rebrands C-Series to A220

Tue Jul 10, 2018 8:39 am

C Series 300 prototype C-FFDO has just left the paint shop at East Midlands (EGNX) bound for Tolouse in Airbus house colours - titles are A220 on the tail and A220-300 on the forward fuselage.

Ok, very interesting. Wasting no time bringing the C-Series into the Airbus family.

Thanks for the info. It confirms the rumors from the past days.

So Boeing 636 is next?

Do we know for sure the cs100 will be A220-100? To me A219(-100) would make a lot more sense.
CS500 -> A221(-500)

Well, the rumor of a rebranding is now confirmed, although it was assumed it would be A210 for the CS100 and A230 for the CS300.
I have to say A220-300 for the CS300 and A220-100 for the CS100 makes a lot of sense though. Smaller (step)sister to the A320, with two variants: a base model and a shrink.

Regarding the Boeing/Embraer tie-up, I thought the E-jets were still to be marketed as Embraers? Or have I missed something?

Buy in the Q400, brand it an A120. launch clean sheet design entering service in 10 to 12 years and then they'll have covered everything from 50 thru 75, 100 seat all the way up to 500 seater VLAs.

Boeing planes even outside of the 7x7 series have traditionally ended with a 7.

I was just joking. I haven't heard anything about that. It's still a bit early for Boeing to make any kind of announcement regarding name change.

Well that rules out a further stretch model and should quieten all rumors of that kind! :rotfl:
Seriously, if a stretch model of the A220-300 is launched, it could be named A220-400. Or -600, Airbus seems to like that one :P Hopefully not -800, the so called lucky number 8 is quite the opposite! (A380-800, 787-8, 747-8, A330-800 - none have proven to be a success).
But you can have an A220-500 and code it A22V (like 78X or A35K).

I wonder if it'll ever be known by the Airbus nomenclature or remain forever as the C Series, the 717 was really just an MD95.

Maybe not a great financial success and was late but I think 443 orders makes the 787-8 different than the other "8" models you mentioned.

I don't think the number 8 or any model name has anything to do with success or failure. The customers are airlines with teams of analysts, not consumers buying the latest iPhone.

Yeah, Airbus has a bit of a mess going with -X00 for the widebodies and A318-321 for the narrow bodies.

Regardless, I think CS1 becoming A219 would make a lot more sense and an eventual CS5 becoming the A221 would make a lot of sense, too.

Except, of course, the B720.

I think it's a shame the name "Bombardier C-Series" disappears. Good that Airbus saved the programme by stepping in, and the A220 will remain the same good-looking little plane as the CS, but still... It was nice and refreshing to see something else than just Boeings and Airbuses.

Will airlines put "Airbus A220-100" on their websites when booking tickets or keep it as Bombardier CS 100?
What about airlines who haven't received any deliveries?

787-800 imho not an unlucky plane...
737-800 a great success indeed... as MAX8...
380-800 very successful in his market...
747-8 not bad... given the end of VLAs
777-800 and 330-800 maybe unlucky for real... but as VLAs era is over maybe the 777-800 will outclass the -900 in sales?

Anyway I do prefer a mathematic progression... from 100 and so on...

I think the Name is well Chosen.
The A220 is a reference to the A320 - the smaller brother/ sister. The -100 and -300 represents the CS origin.

Too much baggage for the A210 or A218! Lol

Boeing’s equivalent would be the 637.

ATR not forgotten. merge ATR and Q400 in 10 to 12 years time on the clean sheet design. There is enough work to go around.

I'd rather rename the E2 as the Boeing 710 (instead of 537, since 5xx was the designation of Boeing for the turbine engines they produced in the past) and the potential 5-abreast NB Boeing-Embraer as the Boeing 730 (instead of 637, since 6xx was used by Boeing to number rocket and missile models).

Anyways, I like the way Airbus renamed the CSeries (it is a nod to the A320 series, although it doesn't follow the way the A320 sub models are named).

I'm very pleased it doesn't have the 'racoon mask'. On the A350 it's ok as long as the tube is white. With other non-white liveries like QR and VN it looks unnecessary. On the A330neo it looks plain silly IMO.
