Fuel Truck Hits United 777 at IAD

Mon Jul 09, 2018 9:40 pm

Just hitting the wire

Accident occurred at D5. Does UA have an extra 777 sitting at IAD or can it ferry one in to cover this flight? Not sure where it is headed, but a 777 is a lot of angry folks and a lot of money.

A loaded full truck hitting a plane carrying a fuel load of jet fuel. Good thing the driver wasn't smoking at the time of the crash.

The article you link to says there were no people on the plane and passengers will experience a slight delay as aircraft swap.

Of today's 772 departures...

UA 803 left early
UA 989 left early
UA 340 left early
UA 915 is expected to go 35 minutes late
UA 106 is expected to go 1 minute early
UA 918 is expected to go 60 minutes late
UA 932 is expected to go on time

Probably not a loaded fuel truck, but a fuel hydrant dispenser - a vehicle that connects the in-ground fueling system to the aircraft:

Not to nitpick but it is unlikely that smoking would ignite the jet fuel unless there are large quantities of fuel vapor as well.

Outside of Terminal A and with a few exceptions on C/D, IAD utilizes a hydrant fueling system that requires either a hydrant truck or a cart.

Yes, UA normally has an extra 772 that sits around for two days at a time and probobly undergoes maintenance. Looks like N793UA was the aircraft that got hit and was supposed to do UA915 to CDG. This aircraft is not supposed to fly until July 11th flying UA950 to BRU now. N786UA was going to fly UA918 to LHR but got switched to UA915. N229UA, which has been on the ground at IAD for two days, came to the rescue and took over UA918. This seems like a well carried out operation by UA to limit delays through switching out aircraft for the LHR flight since it leaves a bit later than the other international flights.

Didn't sound like a lot of damage. Is this fixable in say 2 days so UA won't miss a beat?

Indeed, a lit match dropped into jet fuel will usually just snuff right out.
