Which aliance should Azores Airlines and Hawaiian join?

Thu Jul 05, 2018 12:30 am

SkyTeam, OneWorld or Star Alliance
Think TP is star so S3 should join another alliance to compete with them
Hawaiian can join whether they can because it has codeshare with AA, DL and UA...

None. It serves them better as mostly O&D carriers to be stand alone, no reason at all to join an alliance. Besides, the networks of HA and especially S4 wouldn’t benefit the alliances much either.

It’s the same case for FI, even though they have a vast transfer network joining an alliance wouldn’t help them much. Instead, they codeshare with the likes of B6, AS and WS on the western side and SK, AY and SU on the eastern side along with tons of interline contracts.

Alliances serve no purpose anymore. Codeshares do all that now, and to be honest the only thing alliance members get over JV partners is more lounges where they have access for their premium pax.

To answer the question, as SRQKEF said, none.

None of the US 3 want a reciprocal alliance between the mainland and Hawaii. The airlines are competitors. I think this is why Hawaiian won’t be invited into an alliance.

For HA there really is no one left in the US market with whom they could codeshare with. HA is a boutique airline which would never partner with a ULCC leaving just B6 who they already codeshare with. The problem with this is that B6 is largely a transcon airline which overflies most of mid-America.

Connection options on B6 a very limited. Having just looked at HA’s inflight route map, someone going HNL-ORD on HA would have to route to JFK or BOS then back track. Many of their code share routes are like this including much of the south. HNL-JFK-FLL is another routing that makes very little sense. Without a stronger west coast focus city B6 is a rather ineffective partner which is why HA also partnered with VX pre-merger.

Agreed, none.

Codeshares of opportunity are the way to go.
Alliances benefit those who would expect a large influx from multiple airlines in the alliance. e.g., if you expect feed from UA, LH, and SQ, join *A. But if HA were to do that, they would have to renegotiate with B6.

TAP and S4 code-share with eachother and don't compete because they are both government owned airlines (The Portuguese government still owns 50% of TP).
And I agree that joining an alliance is counter productive for these types of niche, O&D-heavy airlines.

Neither of their route structures work with any alliance, a code share or JV suits them better.

If HA joins any alliance it would be OW thanks to the pending partnership with JAL. OW really doesn't have that many flights to Hawaii.

Hawaiian would bring nothing to any alliance between Hawai‘i and the mainland. It would add value between Hawaii and Asia in any of the alliances but probably not enough to outweigh its negative to the mainland. SkyTeam would probably be the least bad for Hawaiian given the lack of a SkyTeam carrier in Japan and Japan's outsized contribution to the Hawai‘i tourism market.

Azores and TAP already codeshare with each other. It'd be silly for Azores to throw away the massive domestic customer base their relationship with TAP gets them. And Star has a knack for bringing in all sorts of smaller regional airlines. So I guess Star.

But both airlines are better off unaligned with their case-by-case bilateral agreements.

As long as Hawaiian has codeshare agreements with jetBlue, they won't be joining an alliance anytime soon...

HA also codeshares to Asia with AA, but not with UA or DL (which can use UA and DL marketing codes on HA interisland only, i.e. EQMs can be earned).
HA and JL expect a "future JV". Even if the JV is approved, HA membership in OW is a totally different issue.
