Indigo Partners LLC lands in Argentina?

Fri Jun 29, 2018 4:08 pm

Although it has not been made official yet, it is almost certain that Argentina's ANAC has given the green light for Indigo Partners LLC to acquire Alas del Sur S.A., a Cordoba-based paper airline that was formed in 2016 when the local market began its march towards liberalization. Alas de Sur's main asset is its numerous route authorities, domestic and international and would be the quickest route to establish a local operation. It is not cleat if it would involve JetSmart (the Chilean arm of Indigo Partners LLC) - but it would make sense, as JetSmart has made no secret it is interested both in flying to Buenos Aires El Palomar airport before the end of the year AND flying domestically in Argentina, the latter something that as a foreign company is not allowed to.

With the exception of LATAM, all airlines in Argentina are in growth mode. Despite some recent turbulence in the local economy, the airline market shows no sign of slowing down, with record numbers of passengers - both domestic and international. Even Norwegian has jump started it local airline project with major rounds of staff interviews taking place next week near Buenos Aires.

Barely 48hs after the rumors started swirling about Indigo's purchase of Alas del Sur's CESA (Certificado de Explotador de Servicios Aereos) some of the airline industry unions are voicing their opposition.

As reported, companies to which the government "gave" routes and permits, never invested a penny. They falsified business plans and investments. Today those companies resell their CESA to a business that only seeks to loosen regulations. Nice business for some!

UALA - Austral Pilots' union.

Purchase confirmed today. Indigo Partners will now have 3 seats on Alas del Sur board, including one for Brian Franke, son of Bill Franke, co-founder and Managing Partner of Indigo Partners LLC.

Interesting to note that this is confirmed on the same day that Argentina deregulated its domestic air fares.

Do we really need another operator? the country is big, the market, not so much. I even think Norwegian is one airline too many.

Well, that escalated quickly. I wonder how safe the operations at El Palomar are. 6923ft is barely enough runway for a full A320 to take off safely.

The more. the merrier. Let the market decide. There will be winners, and there will be losers, for sure. But the consumer stands to win here. the latter being a total novel concept for Argentina.

Actually slightly longer than AEP and LA's A321s operate safely from there to GRU and SCL, AR 738s to places as far as SSL and USH. Nothing an A320 can't handle.

Indigo Partners LLC entry to the Argentina market will be with the JetSmart brand, already in use in Chile. 5 A320s are planned to be in operation in 2019.

Great news! They have already taken the chilean market by storm and are having great success, even selling tickets for less than a dollar for CyberDay (Our own Black Friday) (plus taxes).
