Sun Country Announcement Tease (6/26 and 6/27)

Mon Jun 25, 2018 8:26 pm

Per their Facebook page:

Happy Monday! We have a lot of exciting announcements coming this week. Stick around our Facebook page (psst...specifically Wednesday morning) to get in on the fun.

Could be connected in part to the STL and MSN announcements and what sounds like, presumably others.

That's extremely vague. The twitter post says "a lot of exciting announcements", so it must be a pretty big deal. The obvious idea that comes to mind is new routes, but at this point, I can't really predict what those routes would be exactly, given their odd route choices as of recently, (meaning that they're not out of MSP) such as LAX-HNL, PDX-MCO, SEA-ANC, and SAN-SJD.

Maybe they're going the "Spirit route" and will announce wi-fi on-board all of their aircraft.

Or better yet, ordering Bombardier C-Series aircraft.

Who knows?! :D

Any ideas?

I am a tad confused by them saying Wednesday morning but have dots on Tuesday and Wednesday. If Tuesday is true then I could see the STL and MSN announcements being this. Curious where they would fly though. MSN said they have 2 destinations.

They should make Laughlin - Bullhead City into schedule service instead of charters.

Well, they are getting more 737-800. N825SY is in Rockford Ill. 826SY & 827SY are sitting in Europe yet. They have one more coming besides these two. Ex THY birds. Rumor has it this fall two coming from Aeromexico. These two from AM, are spouse to be in the new "Orange" colors. Should be announcing new cities starting this fall or winter, soon

Could it be the reveal of the new livery? They had a poll for a new livery a while ago.

People are saying that STL airport's twitter account just followed Sun Country, so there's a very good chance that STL is in the mix somewhere.

I would probably guess STL-SAN and STL-MCO as possible route prospects, since Sun Country usually flies to vacation-oriented destinations (if the routes aren't to/from MSP) and I would also guess that any new route announcements would be for the fall/winter schedule which is when vacation-oriented destinations such as SAN and MCO see the most passenger traffic.

All the new NON MSP flights still come out of MSP.
MSP--LAX-HNL-LAX-MSP,
MSP-PDX-MCO-PDX-MSP
MSP-SEA-ANC-MSP,
MSP-ANC-SEA-MSP

If they are adding STL I see MSP-xxx-STL-XXX- MSP. They can board all catering in MSP, and just add ice at out stations.

DFW does get catered out of DFW to Mexico, Caribbean.

So I don’t think anyone has mentioned MSN-STL as one of the possibilities. That would be an easy one. Except of course that who in the world would fly MSN-STL, especially in the dead of winter? Maybe that’s not a real good guess…

It’s a bit early for me to get a feel for what sort of route map SY might be going for – anything organized of just here and there? And I’m curious to see what sort of operation SY becomes. I presume it will me more of the Allegiant and Frontier model, much like SY has been unveiling lately – lots of very seasonal and very-sub-daily service all over the place.

I suppose if there are enough of these types of airlines with enough of these types of infrequent and irregular flights, a destination city might eventually benefit from it all and end up with an almost significant amount of new, measureable air service. (So far, I’ve been unimpressed with what G4 and F9 have thrown at SAN, with relatively little actually sticking for more than 6 months to a year.)

But then, it looks like it works just fine for enough of the traveling public for those airlines to be successful with it.

I think Sun Country is going to do a Midwest expansion. Maybe just to MSP at the start, and then they'll branch out to the 'sun destinations' at a later date. I think MSN is an Allegiant announcement and I am going to stick by that theory. I think Sun Country will add STL, IND, MKE, and CVG. My Wildcards are MCI, CLE, and CMH

Could be happening following this week's announcements. Still plenty of time I'd think - do most people book Christmas airfare more than 6 months out?

For the MSP market - for sure. Its not so much "Christmas airfare" as it is winter/beach getaway.
Not just winter either - plenty of people would already be planning a "spring break" vacation. Its the nature of market.

STL is Sun Country tomorrow.

Sources tell News 4 Sun Country Airlines, a low-cost airline based in Minnesota will be offering flights out of St. Louis.

Possibly STL-LAS/MCO

I'll be curious to see what they pick. LAS already has 3 carriers on it. MCO has 4 (although DL is once a week seasonal and Allegiant varies from 2x to I think 5x a week). F9 runs a daily a321 on both.

I would be surprised if they do Vegas. Orlando seems like you can always get passengers. Loads are pretty good on everyone who runs it.

"second new major passenger air carrier to begin operations in St. Louis this year" - I actually laughed out loud; "major" ?
Still, good for STL . variety is good.

New "consent to disregard contract of carriage" fares. Super cheap, but they're legally allowed to leave you at the gate if they get a better offer.

My predictions (I've never predicted before): MCO, CUN, DFW, MSP and maybe PUJ

Doing research on Sun Country it actually isn't going to be as ULCC as I thought. You pay for bags/seat selection but it is going to have usb ports at all seats and free soft drinks. Kind of sounds like a basic economy on AA or UA. Also will have a premium economy. Makes me a little more excited for it than I was going to be. Just depends on destinations.

Do they have wifi?

I wish you were right about that, however, it is merely the announcement of service to St. Louis. KMOV/CBS has a story on their website which says that officials at Lambert Airport will make the announcement Tuesday morning at 10:00 AM.

They already have something like this. It allows them to leave you in a foreign country if it becomes too inconvenient to get you back home.

Interesting new strategy for SY. I'd be curious to see what the next cities added are.

Also curious how they will be getting the aircraft to these routes? MSP-TPA-STL-TPA-MSP type routing? Or is there more to come?

Probably. I can't see the STL flights yet, but MSP-TPA arrives TPA 10:48AM and leaves TPA at 6:10PM

What I find interesting in that article is that some of the aircraft being brought in are lease to own. If they end up owning some frames, doesn't that give them their first tangible asset? I don't believe that they currently own any aircraft.

I believe you are correct. I wonder if anyone knows if existing leases were restructured to own the aircraft.

Wednesday announcements are added flight from DFW. DFW is already a focus city, or mini hub for SY.

Just added to web page.....DFW to both TPA & RSW in Oct.
