New Airline at MSN

Sat Jun 23, 2018 10:56 am

Yesterday, the Dane County Regional Airport (MSN) Twitter account indicated that a new airline & two new destinations would be announced next week. This continues a trend of expansion for the airport after PHL was added on AA & F9, LAS (also F9) and SFO on UA over the past year.

Any guesses on the new airline and cities? I think JetBlue is the most logical choice for airline, and assuming the two new destinations are on the new airline, Boston has to be one of them as MSN currently has no service to there. JFK or possibly FLL would be my guess on the 2nd city.

If the 2nd city didn't come from the new carrier, other options could be PHX (AA), or IAD (UA).

There was some speculation that Southwest would be the new carrier, but given the proximity to MKE, that seems unlikely. Alaska to SEA could be an option too.

G4 returns to MSN? To somewhere in Florida, and out west- LAX or IWA perhaps.

I think B6 would be exciting , but I think its a stretch to label it the most "logical" choice. That demonstrates a lack of understanding of their current growth pattern.

I think it’s going to be G4. It fits their business model much better than B6 as it’s a smaller, secondary city.

Yeah, it'll almost certainly be G4 to some combo of FLL, PIE, PGD, and possibly LAS. I don't expect B6 to be entering MSN any time soon.

I know that the logic and the odds are against it, but I would really like to see WN come into MSN.

I would be shocked if it is B6. MKE has a bigger traveler base then MSN. WN would make sense, they are the biggest airline out of MKE so flying out of MSN would allow them to attract the western WI travelers. Also do not rule out Spirit. They do not have any Wisconsin destinations, and with the stranglehold WN, Frontier and Allegiant have in MKE, MSN would be a perfect market.

I do not see Allegiant since they again already have Appleton and MKE. I think that would be a stretch. So my money is on Southwest or Spirit.

Next week?...Well, if it's Tuesday, yeah G4.

I'll throw a curve ball and say 7Q to SRQ, VRB or MLB

I think Jet Blue would do MKE before MSN. Don't ask me why.

I won't ask you why but rather would you rather compete against DL/WN or nobody?

That being said - this smells like G4.

I'm thinking G4 to SFB and AA to PHX personally. PHX generates a lot of demand in the Winter from that area.

G4 to Sanford and Mesa. My bet, as Allegiant really doesn’t have anything in that area, yerno from my understanding those are both big destinations

I would only count on SEA if AS is the airline.

My bet is also on G4. G4 served MSN in the mid-2000’s to LAS if memory serves. IWA makes sense as does mid/south-Florida and possibly LAS. If F9’s loads are healthy they may be looking to run F9 out.

I’m skeptical of AS and B6 seems almost out of the question. If one looks at MSN’s destination profile most of their destinations are to legacy hubs that offer a wide range of connection opportunities. F9 serves leisure destinations with the exception of PHL which I don’t expect will last long.

AS and B6 have very limited brand recognition in the Midwest and none of their hubs offer few proprietary destinations that can’t be reached by existing carriers in one stop. So unless O&D is strong to BOS, JFK or SEA I don’t see this happening.

A LC leisure carrier seems far more likely.

Don’t overlook Via Air doing something. They have been doing some comparable sized destinations of late. Maybe a Branson flight?

STL also has an announcement tomorrow, makes me think it will be Spirit now since they are the same day.

Probably not G4 since they usually load their new flights overnight. Looking more like SY. Although NK is still a possibility.

The MSN Airport director is quoted by local media as saying that these two new route announcements are being driven by business demand which lessens the likelihood that it is a U/LCC. AS makes a little more sense. Could also be Onejet?

MSN Tweet of a cow on a beach with a beach ball and sand bucket.

Clearly going to be a vacation/beach destination(s).

Frontier is showing flights to Providence and San Francisco on their website...but they are not a new airline to MSN.

The two linked news sources don't specifically call out that it's a new airline, just that there are two new destinations... I think two of the top missing markets from MSN are BOS and LAX (certainly two of the top missing business markets, anyway). If those were to be started by one airline I'd guess DL. However, we'll see.

Sun Country to RSW and TPA looks like 2x weekly each in a mock booking.

MSN-BOS is around 75-80 PDEW. MSN seems to punch above its weight a bit on this route. Who knows if it leaks to or even from MKE?

I think MSN-BOS could definitely work if operated by DL 1x daily on a CR7/CR9/E170/E75.

Cool to have a few more nonstops to Florida!

Interesting how no one called that one in the entire thread in terms of picking the correct airline. Sun Country's evolution into part Allegiant, part Frontier, part it's own self is well underway.

Interestingly Delta is running a few non-stops to Boston the last week of August for a conference at Epic. I'm sure there are probably other flights to cities that have a large concentration of Epic client-hospitals that week as well though.

That's cool! In the past I think DL has mostly just upgauged existing flights (753s from MSP, 319s from SLC and LGA, etc.). I know for sure UA has added limited nonstops from hubs they don't normally serve from MSN (IAH, IAD, etc.) for UGM, so it's nice to see DL doing the same. Hopefully MSN-BOS will turn into a regularly scheduled flight as DL's presence in BOS continues to grow.
