Thank you for posting.

Across Atlantic, it really shows the dominance of links to London from the US.

For Latin interesting to see only two routes from MIA. Was always under impression Miami was US hub for Latin America flying especially with the benefit of AA hub feed.

Also for Pacific impressive large O&D market like LA has 5 of top 10 routes.

Shocking how little traffic between USA and our enemy, Canada. :)

The report omits Canada. In 2017, YYZ alone had 12,855,891 to and from the US, and has 2 of the top 20 most frequently served air routes (YYZ-LGA/ORD).

Very strong showing for IAH given Hurricane Harvey shut us down for a while.

Nothing from the mainland to Tokyo in the top 10 . Does anyone have combined NRT/HND numbers?

Yes as I posted on the other thread, counts are fragmented in cities that have multiple airports. This is most apparent in places like New York, London, Tokyo.

For an example of how this plays out - LAX-TYO was 1,298,012 total enplanements in 2017, but fragmented down to 790,533 from NRT and 507,479 from HND.

I honestly would not have guessed that TPE had more traffic to/from West Coast US than HKG, the more you know...

It is. But the largest U.S.-LatAm market is Mexico, and MIA is not a major U.S.-Mexico hub (although MIAMEX and MIACUN are probably in the top 20).

If we don't include Mexico on the list: (My number may have been a little bit different from the OP since I didn't bother sorting through the carrier, so there may have been some cargo/charter/private aviation here and there)
(LAX-MEX 1,216,988)
1. MIA-GRU 952,148
2. MIA-EZE 936,424
3. JFK-SDQ 932,307
(JFK-MEX 876,144)
4. JFK-STI 835,425
(IAH-MEX 817,563)
(LAX-GDL 794,365)
5. MIA-HAV 787,073 (* Did the OP forgot about this?)
(LAX-CUN 740,860)
(JFK-CUN 739,958)
6. MIA-PTY 730,882
(DFW-CUN 715,846)
7. MIA-LIM 708,335
(IAH-CUN 670,031)
8. MIA-BOG 665,981
(MIA-MEX 665,914)
(ORD-MEX 643,228)
(LAX-SJD 627,038)
(ORD-CUN 620,478)
(DFW-MEX 594,091)
(MIA-CUN 562,152)
9. JFK-GRU 552,755
10. FLL-NAS 510,979
11. MIA-SCL 489,097
(SFO-MEX 486,884)
12. FLL-PAP 479,454
13. LAX-SAL 457,824
14. MIA-CCS 452,709
(DEN-CUN 450,753)
(ATL-MEX 449,968)
(EWR-CUN 438,875)
15. JFK-PUJ 435,626

I'll stop there. But as you can see, MIA pretty much dominates once you take Mexico out of the question. The only other 2 that hits the list is that huge DR traffic to/from NYC.

It would be cool to know the top
Airports with number of foreign carriers operating.

interesting how IAH-CUN dropped from the top ten southbound. IIRC last year or the year before it was top ten. I presume a mix of Harvey closures, ULCC pulling off from route, and more point-to-point.

Much of that volume is on charter flights. Look at yesterday - 3 737s and 1 767 charter between MIA and HAV.

You also now have growing international service at HOU

You often share very interesting data with us. Its nice to see actual numbers, then just random discussion or conjecture.

Makes sense then. As I said I simply add up all the number regardless of carriers :white: .

Using my spreadsheet (Again, LAXIntl's number are more accurate, since I didn't do a filter on carrier). For the "additions" the first number is NRT, second number is HND.
TYO-HNL: 1,727,271 + 476,564 = 2,203,835
TYO-LAX: 790,633 + 507,643 = 1,298,276
TYO-GUM: 812,048
TYO-SFO: 359,901 + 286,163 = 646,064; TYO-SJC: 93,218. Total TYO-SF Bay Area: 739,282
TYO-ORD: 574,187 + 123,893 = 698,080
TYO-JFK: 276,436 + 204,689 = 481,125; TYO-EWR: 173,834. Total TYO-NYC: 654,959
TYO-DFW: 439,819
TYO-IAH: 291,706
TYO-IAD: 288,382
TYO-SEA: 265,987
TYO-DTW: 233,128
TYO-ATL: 195,855
TYO-MSP: 169,173
TYO-DEN: 137,980
TYO-SAN: 120,375
TYO-BOS: 114,662
TYO-PDX: 107,095
TYO-SPN: 95,866
TYO-KOA: 29,218 + 64,339 = 93,557 (* Keep in mind JL only start operating NRT-KOA from Sep 2017, hence the smaller number than HA's HND-KOA)

MIA I believe has the most foreign carriers. It's served by more airlines than any U.S. airport, although that includes cargo carriers. All those little LatAm/Caribbean carriers like Avior and SLM and Aruba Airlines and Aserca add up, and it has like 22 airlines from Europe/Middle East.

Also interesting to note FLL-PAP carries more passengers than MIA-PAP. No wonder American flies FLL-PAP twice a day.

Nope. I counted 68 for JFK and 43 for MIA (I counted 55 for LAX). What hurts MIA is the fact that it has zero Asian carriers going there.

For every Avior or Aserca, JFK has Saudia or Uzbekistan or Azerbaijan Airways to counter it. Pretty much every single Europe carriers that flies to MIA also fly to JFK.

IAH has 19 (formerly 20) . IIRC SEA has 18 (but please let me know if I am incorrect).

While I'm going through the data, HKG-SEA doesn't even have that bad of a load factor (84.3%). It does carried the least pax of all the HKG-US mainland routes, though.

While I'm at HKG vs. TPE:

NYC: HKG 818,397 (487,361 JFK + 331,036 EWR) vs. TPE 457,938
ORD: HKG 316,217 vs. TPE 121,023
SEA: HKG 127,184 vs. TPE 260,863

Other routes: HKG-DFW is 189,305 pax, HKG-BOS is 155,792 pax, and TPE-IAH is 178,124 pax (So essentially tie with HKG-DFW).

In another word, once you leave the West Coast, HKG dominates. Of course, HKG-NYC has that really strong financial industry tie that helps carried tons of (premium) pax.

International Carriers By Airport (Only passengers, not counting cargo) (For this list Avianca is counted separately from Avianca El Salvador or Avianca Brasil, etc.) This is what I counted, sorry if I made a mistake somewhere.
JFK- 74 international carriers by the end of this year. ( includes 2 new int. carriers this year that haven't started service as of today)
LAX- 59 international carriers. (no new int. carriers announced as of now)
MIA- 51 international carriers by the end of this year. (includes 1 new int. carriers this year that haven't started service as of today)
SFO-44 international carriers by the end of this year (includes 2 new ones)
ORD- 43 international carriers by the end of this year (includes 3 new ones)
BOS- 34 international carriers by the end of this year. ( includes 3 new ones)
IAD- 32 international carriers by the end of this year (includes 2 new ones)
EWR- 27 international carriers by the end of this year (includes 2 new and 1 leaving)
SEA- 20 international carriers by the end of this year (includes 1 leaving)
FLL- 15 international carriers (no new)

Adding to this list:
IAH - 20 international carriers (no new)
DFW - 15 international carriers, including 1 seasonal and leaving (WS) and 1 seasonal (WW).

P.S. My original count combined all the Avianca airlines and LATAM airlines, which is why I only got 43 for MIA.

I’m surprised that JFK-DXB didn’t make the list. That’s the 10th busiest international route from JFK.

It's at 737,289 pax. Not quite enough to make Top 10 TATL (It's #16; After BOS-LHR it's ATL-AMS, ATL-CDG, LAX-CDG, JFK-FRA, and JFK-MAD).

It also carried more than twice the pax of the next busiest US-DXB route (to LAX, 321,151 pax).

Now we should combine the metro area carriers and see what happens to the list. Adding the unique carriers at SJC and OAK would add another 4 or 5 to the Bay Area count. NYC, Miami and Washington DC would add more as well.

No DTW on any list. Must be DL and Wayne County’s fault.

(klm617 Mode)Yep, especially when ATL barely make any lists, yet DL continue to just push all flights to ATL and make DTW smaller and smaller [/sarcasm]

On a more serious note, the top international DTW route (to AMS, no less, klm617 be proud) carried less pax than ATL-AMS, ATL-CDG, along with ATL-LHR. At least there are more pax on DTW-NRT than ATL-NRT :stirthepot: :stirthepot:

I think the growth of JFK to STI is interesting. STI did not even exist 20 years ago and now it has one of the busiest routes between Latolin America and the US.

Kind of goes to show again how much the US3 (particularly DL) are making a mountain out of a molehill with their ME3 hate.

There's oodles of traffic to routes that the ME3 don't touch, and even if they tried a 5th freedem LHR-US route would probably get their lunch handed to them.

and Delta's ATL-DXB was packed to the gills every single day both directions in front with govt premium, and in the back with govt contractors also on premium Y fares. They had no business cutting that route except to try and make said mountain and/or molehill

I have to wonder if that was part of why B6 started flights to ATL? The JFK-DXB Emirates flights all carry JetBlue codeshares on them, and it's the only codeshare on those flights.

I find it surprising that MIA-GRU has a decent ranking. Travel is depressed by the slow economy in Brazil.

DFW low foreign carrier numbers are an ongoing problem since airport opened in 1974.

DFW is a domestic superhub due to AA.
Foreign airlines realize the AA fortress and more importantly, no vacation or travelers have even the remote interest in DFW.

What’s there to do or sights to see?
None. Good place to work and raise family? Sure. But not a place to visit.

LAX-HKG had, for most of the year, also 5xdaily 77Ws by CX and AA, but these are less-dense 4class birds.

That's not true, they have a small number of western Asian carriers flying there. None from east/southeast or southern Asia, though.

JFK to LHR is an amazing route pair: 20 non-stops a day among British, American, Virgin and Delta. All widebodies - from 332s to 774s. There has to be 5,000 - 6,000 seats a day each way on that route.

For TPE - it "helps" that the traffic going there is heavily concentrated in LAX and SFO. HKG has twice the pax to/from ORD and NYC compare to TPE.

For MIA - I keep forgetting EK, QR, and TK. :white: I shoild have been more clear and say "East Asian" carriers.

TK is not an Asian airline, and EK doesn't fly to MIA.

Turkey straddles both Europe and Asia, but IST airport is physically within Europe, and TK operates as a European carrier.

LY is MIA's other western Asian carrier, alongside QR.

Out of curiosity do you have counts for CDGLAX? If I recall correctly that is the second largest US market from France.

CDG-LAX was 762,540 in 2017.
Technically CDG-ATL had slightly more at 777,416, but we know much of that traffic is simply hub-hub connections flow.

Thanks LAXIntl for the thread.

I recently saw a LAWA blurb that in 2017 the SoCal basin accounted for 40% of US mainland Transpac enplanements. Suppose it makes sense with LAX having 5 of top 10 routes in your list.
