PEK posts robust rebound in pax growth during Jan-May this year

Tue Jun 19, 2018 2:27 am

With a 41,374,000 passenger throughput during Jan-May 2018, PEK has registered a robust 6.1% pax growth over the same period of the previous year, according to latest statistics released by Beijing Capital International Airport Company on its website (http://www.bcia.com.cn/investor/monthly.shtml)

This past May just registered a strong growth of 6.9% year-on-year at 8,349,000 pax

Such growth rate appears extraordinary to PEK now, given the hub has experienced capacity crunch in recent couple years that saw its annual pax numbers stagnate at approx 95 million (The figure for 2017: 95,786,000, a tepid 1.5% rise over 2016), largely due to failure of local ATC in tapping capacity potential of the airport’s 3 wide-spaced parallel rwys via simultaneous independent operations, as well as due to a severe shortage of Chinese civil airspace

If we take into account the seasonality of the hub that usually sees stronger pax demand in latter half of a year, one question may arise:

Could PEK continue this growth momentum to break the 100 million pax milestone in 2018, becoming another airport in the world to do so after ATL?

As Beijing’s new airport is about to open on Oct 1 next year, air traffic for the Chinese capital is consequently to be split btwn two mega hubs, resulting in a considerable drop in PEK’s pax numbers in the near term

Also with the advent of the new airport in Daxing District, the possibility of building an additional 4th rwy at PEK remains slim now

No exaggeration to say 2018 represents one last rare window of opportunity for PEK to hit the 100M milestone in this decade

We'll see whether that happens

I don't see why they shouldn't get to 100M thgis year.

I'm curious if high growth rates return when the new airport opens. I hope they have their airspace issues resolved before the new airport opens.

People need to keep in mind that the airspace encompassing Beijing (all airports) and Tianjin is very tightly controlled. Without a big increase in slots, there won’t be a big increase in pax.

Xi Dada bringing harmonious growth to Beijing airport.

But in all seriousness, we know how much Chinese data like GDP, and so on is faked to “save face”. What is the likelihood that this data could be faked to allow the government to celebrate a massive milestone?

eh isn't the growth because of the runway work they have to perform at PEK that limited the aircraft movement count?

http://www.bcia.com.cn/investor/monthly.shtml

According to the latest monthly traffic report by Beijing Capital Int’l Airport Co. Ltd, PEK’s pax number for October is 8,950,000, up 6% YoY

The accumulative pax number during Jan-Oct 2018 is 84,340,000

This means PEK is bound to hit its eagerly-anticipated 100M milestone in 2018, as long as it handles a monthly 7,830,000 pax for the remaining 2 months each, a target that is absolutely well within PEK’s reach even though it is still under CAAC’s ban on flight additions

A very safe bet to say PEK will become the 2nd 100M airport in the world after ATL (in 2015) by the end of this year in 2018, representing the apogee of its growth over the decades right before, alas, the opening of the grand new Daxing Airport/ZBAD next year that will be splitting a big portion of the BJS traffic away from PEK
