An Air Niugini Dash-8 has been burnt to rubble by protestors in the countries highlands angry at the result of an election.

According to the article in the OP, the airline backs this up with their official statement: ..."The aircraft has suffered damage....". :faint:

Seriously, very sad to see a perfectly fine aircraft prematurely finding its end. What has the airline to do with these regional elections?

I was recently in New Zealand, and I took a NZ ATR from DUD to CHC. The DUD terminal had a non-sterile entry to the gate for prop flights, and similarly, at CHC, there was a non-sterile area for prop flights. What I heard from my New Zealand hosts, security is not necessary for prop flights.

Perhaps he was due to get on the flight and as everyone here knows, prop flights don't have toilet roll... or toilets.

It's probably just superficial smoke damage. But it's hard to tell from the photo whether there was any damage to the avionics bay. That's what will really determine the fate of this plane.

Any type of gusty wind or temperature below 25C is considered long-sleeve and hat weather. I've seen ramp workers in the Caribbean wearing long pants and shirts in the middle of the day to protect from the sun as well. People who are acclimatized to warm weather get cold easily.

Mendi is a town in PNG’s Southern Highlands region. It is over 6000 feet above sea level and has a relatively temperate climate.

The Air Niugini Dash 8 became the mob’s target as it is perceived to be owned by the Waigani (central) government whose actions they were protesting against. The irony is of course, all PNG people own it and it provides a lifeline for Mendi, a town still recovering from a massive earthquake a few months ago.

Tropical highlands can become pretty chilly. I remember that Nairobi could easily drop down to 10 degrees, and felt positively wintery when stepping off the plane from Dar-Es-Salaam.

The temperature in Mendi (where this happened) will be down to 9 degrees at night this week.

It's late fall almost winter below the equator... and Mendi this week has lows at 48 F / 9 C... I would have light jacket on for sure myself...

It was quite a nice surprise not having to go through the routine when I was going on the prop flight DUD-CHC.

Also, I noticed in Australia that in domestic terminals people can come to the gate to greet arriving passengers. My first time I went to Australia, last September, when I arrived in PER after my DEN-LAX-MEL-PER AA and QF trip, the person who was hosting me came straight to the gate to greet me as I got off my MEL-PER QF A330 flight, another nice surprise. (Not to mention, it was nice flying trans-Australia on a widebody with a hot meal in coach.)

Seriously, and sadly, these things happen from time to time during civil unrest. I'm old enough to remember the Dawson's Field hijackings in September, 1970. When Pan Am Flight 93, a Boeing 747-121, was hijacked on that same day, it was flown to Cairo where the passengers & crew were evacuated, followed by the Palestinian terrorist hijackers blowing the plane up. Pan Am filed a war risk insurance claim with their insurer, Lloyd's of London, which paid the claim. I don't know if Air Niugini's fleet has that kind of coverage, but I'm sure they are covered in some way or another.

One more thing, I'm amazed at how well today's airplanes burn once they are set alight!

I can't speak for this airport in particular but a lot of these airports in PNG/Solomon Islands see service ~once a day and serve a very important purpose when they aren't in use - as a soccer (football) field. This isn't a developed nation and there simply isn't the money nor need to provide such extensive security.

Nope. The other way around. The rest of the world has a long way to catch up with NZ, Oz or the like: Base your safety and security efforts on needs and real risk assesments, not on a policy of fear & anger. They don't need to put up a show for the masses. In some places of this world the plane is just the easiest connection to the next bigger city, like a bus or a regional train. No need to handle it any different security wise.

Right now in the SYD area, the average temps are in the upper 60Fs in the daytime and in the morning in the 50Fs. I see people bundled up like they are in Chicago in January, while I am wearing a long sleeve shirt. People in this area of the world do not know how to handle temp changes without overreacting.

Agreed. I flew for MAF down there for a couple of months and the amount of times I had to go around or push the throttle for them to hear me and get out of the way was absurd.
