bilaterals USA-Tunisia

Sun Jun 10, 2018 6:46 am

As Tunisair mulls to start New York, reportedly by the end of 2018 (crazy) or S19 the latest, and maybe with a YUL tag either way.. and all these brainstorming options.. I wondered what did the Air Traffic Agreement between the two parties define in terms of capacity, rights of traffic.. There is not a single word about Tunisia on the DoT portal. Not in the Open Skies and not in the bilaterals lists of signing countries.

Tough to envision them starting any time soon, in light of such.

Is Tunis even FAA category1?

Tunisia is not on the FAA IASA list, neither category 1 nor 2, maybe no assessment was conducted so far.

Read somewhere that the routibg will be via a West African city. I thought of DKR may be. Now I understand why. This is a workaround because of lack of aviaion bilateral agreements with the US.

Even via a West African country and even for code-share rights an Air Transport Agreement between both parties is required. As per Dakar i don't think the Senegalese will allow because their newly established airline should receive two A330neo in the near future and North America should be a targeted market. Senegal has Open Skies with the US.

Tunisia is free to negotiate a treaty. It's not that difficult of a process for small countries.

absolutely.. I wonder why the Foreign Affairs and the Transportation department didn't make the move towards it so it's ready whenever an airline expressed interest..
