Icelandair Now Has Two 757-300s

Sat Jun 09, 2018 8:01 pm

For many years Icelandair only operated a single example of this type, TF-FIX. Recently they acquired an ex-Arkia example, TF-ISX. Unfortunately it wasn't painted into the latest color scheme that is seen the 737Max. I suspect Iclandair will eventually end up with three of the type, as Arkia is now only flying a single example of the 757-300, 4X-BAU.

The tail lacks the Icelandair tiles, similar to the MAX. I do like the special livery they've gone with, very sharp

It’s very retro. Like something you’d see from the 1970s.

What routes does FI fly the 757-300s on?

Can pretty much be found all over on routes that do not exceed 6 hrs. This plane would have looked great as a retro trim like the Loftleidir DC-8-63 in the 1970s.

I like it! Looks pretty retro indeed. I love cheatlines.
This 757 reminds me of British Midland livery on early 1990s.

The livery seen on the MAX looks like a budget, cheap version of the classy Icelandair livery seen on their 757s and 767s...
Something like "Hey, hurry up! We need this plane ready at 5 P.M.!" :duck:

That livery is clearly a representation of the Icelandic flag, not retro in any way.

It has nothing to do with the World Cup. It is commemorating Iceland's one hundred years of sovereignty. The colors are the Icelandic flag.

It looks really good. The retro part is how the flag’s red and white is the aircraft’s cheatline. Very sharp and way better than the new MAX livery.

Isn't it great how so many posters here slag airlines for having "euro white" paint schemes and then someone comes up with a colorful one and they're still not satisfied.

Touché. Then again some think every Eurowhite livery is “clean and modern” aka borrrrrrrrrrrrring.

A likely route for this is KEF-EWR as that's scheduled for a B753 (75T) Monday-Thursday this week.

What I don't get is why don't they start building a new departure bank so their planes don't have to sit for 12 hours at various US airports. I mean they are receiving new aircraft so they could start doing it ... in theory.

It is actually pretty retro... just because Icelandair may not have designed it to be retro (they may have i don’t know but assuming they didn’t) they still have pulled off a look of an era gone. Not sure how you can say not retro in any way at all... when everyone else on here seems to think it is including myself! The cheatline and bold color pull off a look of time past!

What routes does FI fly the 757-300s on?

Europe and east coast of North America when a 757-200 is to small and a 767-300 is to big. FI adjusts frames to bookings. Even doubling up to two 757 with 15 minutes difference in departures.

They started with a second bank, but went back to one bank again this year, while adding destinations.

For next winter at least OSL gets the -300 on Mondays and Fridays. I'm doing a Iceland/Norway trip in Nov/Dec and I've planned dates around logging the -300.

I’m surprised DL or UA didn’t snap up the 753s from Arkia. DL has been long known to buy used aircraft and UA has put an emphasis on this strategy in recent years with the 320 series and 767.

The 753 is a great hub-hub and hub-leisure market people mover. Does anyone know if either airline even looked into picking them up?

Have flown that particular 757 many many time while with Arkia on the busy domestic TLV-ETH runs, would go AOG more often than not!

Yes, that's why FI had it for 4 more months than scheduled in maintenance. Almost everything had to be replaced, it really wasn't it good shape. From what I've heard, now it's like new.

The good thing about this bird is that it's high cycle and low hours, while FI's operation calls for low cycles and high hours. This aircraft can stay at FI for many years!

The thing is that DL only has 757s with PW engines, while Arkia (and FI for that matter) have RR.

Not sure about UA.

Interesting. The second bank was with European or north American flights? I guess it could only work if they do some major network reshuffling starting with getting rid of those 12 hour layovers in America.

12? Some sit on the ground for almost 24 hours.
SEA even has 2 aircraft siting on the tarmac for just under 23 hours. One of them 4 times a week.

All of FI's 757s are fully owned by them so the costs of making them sit at outstations is little to none. Plus, if they didn't wait the route would be pointless as the whole point of FI's network is having a large number of destinations on the other side of the Atlantic available with a 1-2 hour connection only. FI also uses the time on the ground to do smaller maintenance checks that would otherwise be done in KEF.

The extra bank was BOS, JFK, IAD, YYZ and SEA on the west side and CDG, MUC, FRA, OSL, ARN, CPH, HEL and AMS on the east side. Flights to Europe left at 1am, returned at 9am. Flights west then departed at 10:30am, returning at 11pm. I loved the option of the daytime flights US-KEF, was sad to see it go! Evidently it made more sense for FI to condense all flights into a single huge bank in the traditional time frame.

Good question!

On the meeting where the CEO and CFO were presented ICE's financial results, they said that they expected to introduce a new route network in July. This will be very interesting since by acquiring the B737 MAXes they can set up new routes further away from Iceland; deeper into EUR and further East as well as new cities in US/CAN. Flying to smaller cities.
This new route network will have at least 2 banks.

The passenger ones (and 3 of the 4 767s) are fully owned unencumbered. However, both freighters are leased along with 1 freighter, and the 737s have sale-leasebacks. That said, when is FI planning to open a third bank?

Correct, also the afternoon flight to LHR (FI454/455) is often a 753 as well. Back in the day before the route network boomed that was almost always a 753.

Iceair has so many not just good looking, but inspired and unique special paintschemes... then they crank out that boring turd of a new livery. I just don’t get it.

I don't like the livery, but this picture does look a little better than the other angle. I guess at least it is better than a boring white fuselage.

Oh yes, the older version looks way classier and sharper. The MAX reminds me of some toy, I hope they go back to the previous livery.

Yes, just one all the time previously. TF-FIX B757-308 delivered new on 18 Mar 2002.

On a side note, TACV Cabo Verde Airlines now only has one B757-200 left in their fleet Icelandair TF-FIW B757-27B. Their own B757-2Q8 D4-CBP has been in storage since Jan 2018 at Goodyear.

According to planespotters.net, Icelandair will be getting another B757-223WL ex-American Airlines N687AA MSN 25695/ LN 536, a 25.2 year old bird.

Now that I've seen a side on pic I don't mind it but I agree it doesn't represent their flag as well as it could.

Personally I'd move the titles aft of L2/R2 and have a white/red/white stripe wrapping around the fuselage vertically aft of L1/R1.

This 757-300 was almost shot down during the Mombassa terrorist attack on November 28, 2002. It was operating Arkia 582 Mombassa - Tel Aviv. Two shoulder launched missiles were launched at the aircraft. Both missiles missed and the aircraft was not damaged. Flight 582 had 261 passengers and 10 crew onboard at the time. At the same time a bomb went off at a hotel killing 13.
