RR 787 Engine retrofit

Sat Jun 09, 2018 7:54 am

As we all know the 787 has been having it's fair share of run ins with the Rolls Royce Trent 1000 and from what I've gathered the Trent XWB has had a near perfect reliability. So my question is, would it be feasible to do a straight retrofit replacement of the Trent 1000 for the Trent XWB? Is the XWB just too large to fit under the wing? Any ideas, comments welcome.

Not without an entirely new certification process.

We're talking different diameters, different thrust, different pylon, different weight (and ensuing characteristics), different stresses, different drag, different fuel economy, different software, etc etc..... so yeah, definitely not something that Boeing would have the slightest interest in doing at this point.

It could be added that Airbus wouldn`t countenance such an idea as RR-XWB-84/97 are
contracted as sole supply to A350. XWB is also quite a bit heavier than T-1000 so from
that standpoint alone it probably couldn`t hang from a Dreamliners wing without structural
work....just wouldn`t be worth it.

Aren`t RR getting on top of this issue by now anyway? If they are not, surely it won`t be
too long before all affected engines are repaired. T-1000-TEN is being supplied as quickly
as possible, & engineers are working flat out on blade replacement. Hopefully this RR
debacle will soon end for the airlines, Boeing, & RR, it hasn`t been a good period for them.

Will be interesting to watch if RR ratcheting up T-1000 TEN production doesn't create new issues.
( Look at P&W rather carefully botching up the industrialization process for the GTF.)

Well, considering that the TEN has been heavily improved with tech from Trent XWB, any issues with the TEN would probably be found on the XWB and T7000. RR will surely not want that to happen.

The no bleed air vs. bleed air might be the biggest difference between the 2 engine families that will make an "easy" retrofit impossible.

Furthermore the production capacity at RR would not be sufficient to suddely produce enough Trent XWBs for this kind of retrofits. They already don't have the capacity to retrofit all 787s with the Trent 1000 TEN. It's one of the reasons why it will take several years before this issue is completely solved.

Awesome bit of info all. I figured the certification process alone would not be work it but the tech specs behind the XWB was what I was more curious about and got that thought well answered.
