Stobart Air is likely to face at least two challengers when a contract to operate the Aer Lingus Regional service comes up for grabs in the next few years.

Stobart Air currently holds a 10-year contract with IAG-owned Aer Lingus that sees it operate the Aer Lingus Regional service on behalf of the larger carrier on a franchise basis.

A new wet lease operator, Hibernian Airlines, which was founded in Dublin last year, is among those now eyeing business with Aer Lingus.

The CEO of Dublin-based CityJet, Pat Byrne, has also previously said he would be interested in tendering for the franchise contract.

Hibernian Airlines is owned by Spain's Air Nostrum, which is controlled by building materials group Nefinsa and Spanish bank Caja Duero.

Air Nostrum has been a partner of Spain's Iberia airline, also owned by IAG, for more than 20 years.

It currently operates a large number of routes on a franchise basis for Iberia.

Air Nostrum executive Miguel Oliver told industry publication 'Flight Global' in April that Hibernian Airlines hopes to have an Irish air operator's certificate by the end of this year.

He said Hibernian Airlines will be used by Air Nostrum to secure wet lease contracts in central and northern Europe and that it will also try to win business from Aer Lingus.

Believe current contract is runs until late 2021/early 2022.

Yes but Dublin Airport Authority couldn't get the land, there were houses there and other issues so it wasn't viable.

TUI are picking up some nasty delays on their package flights. Some major delays recently to KGS and BOJ ranging from 8 hours to a whopping 22 hours.

Frustrated Aer Lingus sunseekers left stranded in Lanzarote following Cork-bound flight cancellation

The flight was supposed to leave on Tuesday morning but was delayed and then cancelled

Irish holidaymakers have been left stranded in Lanzarote after the Cork-bound EI877 was cancelled.

The Aer Lingus A320 was due to leave the holiday hotspot at 11.10am on Tuesday.

Passengers were all set to board before they were told it was delayed and then cancelled, but many passengers were not given a reason for hours.

Only some passengers heard that it was due to an unwell crew member from the airline.

Shannon Airport remains United with US airline after 20 years

SHANNON Airport and United Airlines have marked the “very important milestone” of 20 years of flight to New York-Newark, a service that has carried close to two million passengers.

Since the Shannon-Newark flight was launched in June 1998, it has carried over 1.9 million customers on more than 13,500 flights.

Bob Schumacher, United Airlines’ Managing Director Sales, United Kingdom and Ireland is in Shannon and Limerick this Thursday to mark 20 years and said the airline was “delighted” to do so.

Ah go on now, sure he'd be no good at changing tyres.

I see that Airbus is close to launching a lower MTOW version of the 350-1000. Just wondering if this might be of interest to EI down the road . The current 35K is a highly range capable acft (CX is launching it on HKG-IAD), more than EI needs . However in capacity terms it might provide the growth that EI will need to build the DubHub ... The 359 doesn't really allow much capacity growth over the 333. It will be interesting to see how the LH fleet develops . Currently, the major focus is on the 321LR and next priority after that is probably the 320 fleet, with CEO 320s apparently the favoured option. However, once the SH fleet is rolled over, the long haul fleet will need to be looked at, particularly as the 332 fleet is getting on a bit.

Would have thought they changed wheels - the tyre change can come later! Surely changing a tyre is so much more time-consuming than changing a wheel!

DUB-EWR and SNN-EWR was operated by CO from 1998 until the CO/UA merger, after which they became UA flights. I don't believe there were any DUB or SNN scheduled flights by UA tulips!

DAA claims An Taisce's M50 congestion concerns over planning application are 'rather bizzare'

The Dublin Airport Authority is labelling An Taisce's claims that its planning application is going to increase congestion on the M50 as 'rather bizzare'.

The DAA says it will not result in a single extra car parking space.

An Taisce is opposing its application to continue to keep almost 11,000 long-term car park spaces.

Growth may 'grind to a halt', says Aer Lingus

Airline will redeploy new fleet away from Dublin if infrastructure not improved

Growth at Dublin airport could "grind to a halt" as early as next year because it lacks appropriate infrastructure and development and investment plans to address capacity constraints, Aer Lingus has warned.

If a deficit in "hub infrastructure" is not addressed "in an urgent manner... the growth opportunity currently planned by Aer Lingus will need to be revisited and the fleet currently earmarked for the growth will have to be deployed outside of Ireland", it said.

I've been saying it for a while, the DAA's 'ah sure it will do' attitude of just lashing up temporary piers and parking areas just isn't good enough. They need to build another permanent pier or move ahead with plans for Terminal 3.

If they try to spend on actual piers the very same airlines whinge to the regulator who then stops it. They don't support a pier they will never support T3.

Any spend outside regulator approval cannot be recovered via airport charges.

The sale of Aer Rianta international airports could pay for development. They have great investments in Düsseldorf and Larnaca airports that are worth a fortune.

They could or they could finance it other ways but would also have to finance the long term running costs because the development would not be approved. Let airlines use it for free because they can't charge them nor can they force them to move. Its not a workable solution. Going against airline wishes has failed in the past for the daa.

The set up is far from ideal tbh. Its crazy that domestic flights from KIR and CFN still have to go through passport control when they land. Was on a KIR flight recently and a group of american golfers almost joined the (extremely and unacceptably long) non-EU line before their host refused to make them join the queue, it was sorted in the end but shows that DUB is not set up to handle the different scenarios of flights it currently receives.

Dont even get me started on their handling of CTA flights :banghead:

Providing an exit for under 150 passengers on domestic flights per day isn't exactly practical either.

On the day that CO launched the DUB SNN EWR service, the DAA chairman Noel Hanlon bid the aircraft farewell in dublin and then flew in a private jet to Shannon to bid the aircraft farewell there.

I’m ageing myself here, but remember it well. It was the time when the traffic news used to announce late arrivals of long haul. The CO was late four times in the first week, so RTE had to be gently asked to stop killing continental with bad news before the route established.

How things have changed. DUB had about 10m pax back then.

Always puzzles me why the Irish dont adhere to their part of the agreement for CTA as they dont do what the British seem to manage at the majority of UK Airports yet they are the ones crying about possible physical checks on the Irish - UK border between ROI-NI . Quite ironic ...

As someone who flies CFN - DUB regularly the passport control is a non-issue. Ideally it wouldn't be necessary of course and if I had to queue in T1 I might think differently but in T2 it typically adds about 10 seconds to my journey. Far more pressing issues to sort out

I assume your an Irish or British passport holder so you wouldn't have too much of a delay. However the KIR and CFN flights arrive at peak morning and any non EU passport holders can get caught up in waits of an hour or longer and there is no reason why that should happen.

789s for about 3 weeks until 20 Jun, then 788 until end October

If I was flying to PEK with HU I wouldn’t be too quick using the blanket given for comfort, I’ll just say it’s not fresh.

Oh? Elaborate?

Fold the old used one & put it back on the seat for the next passenger.

Does any airline actually launder their blankets between rotations(or even weekly?). As far as I was aware all they do is re-package them, I've even had EI J blankets with marks and stains on them, including food.

I assume your an Irish or British passport holder so you wouldn't have too much of a delay. However the KIR and CFN flights arrive at peak morning and any non EU passport holders can get caught up in waits of an hour or longer and there is no reason why that should happen.

Completely agree. Why should someone already in the CTA area and have a valid visa and stamp have to go through the same process again as if they just stepped off a CX from HKG or EK from DXB when they are on a CTA flight especially the ones ( Domestic ) you mention.

Any airline I have been with provide fresh blankets in a sealed polythene bag to show they have been cleaned and are new for you. I for one wouldnt want one from the last passenger, knowing what passengers are willing to do when its not their own property.

You don't need a passport for Irish domestic flights - any other form of ID (driver's licence/bus pass/work ID card etc.) is acceptable.

Aer Lingus: Drunk passengers will be turned away from flights at airport

Aer Lingus says all passengers are assessed before they board a flight and if anyone is intoxicated, they will be turned away.

The comments come after Ryanair called for airports to ban the sale of alcohol before 10am to cut down on the level of drunkenness on board morning flights.
Aer Lingus says alcohol bought in the airport that has been opened or decanted is confiscated and disposed of and all crew members are trained in the controlled sale of alcohol during flights.

Dublin Airport dismisses Ryanair call for morning ‘booze ban’

Airline called for stricter rules after disturbance grounds Dublin-Ibiza flight

Ryanair’s call for an early morning booze ban at airports has been labelled “highly draconian” by the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA).

The airline made the call after a group of Irish-based holidaymakers forced an Ibiza-bound Ryanair flight from Dublin to divert to Paris on Saturday morning.

The group of up to 20 holidaymakers were involved in the drink-fuelled disturbance after which three passengers were removed and detained by French police .

“The behaviour of some individuals on the Ryanair flight in question was clearly unacceptable,” a spokeswoman for the DAA said.

She pointed out that Dublin Airport had “worked in the past with Ryanair and other airlines, the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA), the gardaí and Airport Police on a joint education campaign to stress that such behaviour in totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated at the airport”.

You still need to clear passport control and that only applies to British and Irish citizens.

AFAIK the CTA only applies to U.K. and Irish citizens, by extension it should also apply to EU citizens, but that’s not the wording of the treaty and I don’t think that’s ever been tested in court.

On Twitter Stobart are reported to be increasing the capacity on KIR-DUB using can ATR72 for the winter. Where’s the -42 off to? Stobart should also have an ATR released from the Isle of Man, BE are taking over the routes themselves.

RE has retired the two ancient ATR 42-300s EI-CBK and EI-EHH and replaced them with one new ATR 42-600 (EI-GEV) which exclusively serves the DUB-CFN and DUB-IOM routes. The article is a bit misleading in that DUB-KIR was already upgauged to the ATR 72-600 at the beginning of the season but the increase in capacity they mention for W18 will be comparing the increase to W17.

Thats because its a bilateral treaty and nothing to do with the EU. The CTA dates back to 1923. Its purely a British-Irish agreement even though at times a messy one which often has created issues and lack of understanding of what it really means by its citizens.

There was another article about the expansion of facilities at KIR and the increase in capacity was mentioned although as mentioned its not really new.

I have actually on occasion been waved through passport control coming from CFN on the 15:30 flight, presumably security confident we're the only arriving pax at that time. They just open the gates and let everyone through

The EI J blankets I received were in sealed bags but had both stains/marks and long strands of hair on them, I've said it to the cabin crew on both occasions and they've just replaced them for me without more than an 'oh ok'. Qatar has been the same.
