SQ fleet planning (A350, 787-10 utilization)

Thu May 31, 2018 2:12 pm

It's been five years since I last flew with SQ -- then on a 77W from MUC-SIN and this time on their A359 from MUC-SIN. I figured the A359 would replace members of the 777 family, but I was surprised to see that SQ has ordered 60 A359s, which is alone more 777s than it ever had in its fleet.

According to wikipedia's entry for SQ, they have:

- A333s: 22 in fleet, due to be replaced with A359s and 787-10s
- 772s: 9 in fleet, replaced and due to be replaced by A359s and 787-10s
- 77Es: 9 in fleet, replaced and due to be replaced by A359s and 787-10s

- A359s: 21 in fleet, 39 on order
- 787-10s: 2 in fleet, 47 on order

The remaining A359s (excluding 7x of the -ULR) and 787-10s total 86, which is far more than the A333s and 772s currently flying (40).
Let's assume for a second that the 779s replace the A380s more or less 1:1, which leaves the 77W (27 frames) to also be replaced by the A359. This leaves 17 frames between the A359 and 787-10 for growth.

Granted, some of the 787-10 can be shifted to Scoot, but is SQ really planning on this much growth? Or does SQ plan to use, for instance, 1.5 A359 to replace each 77W? Or am I missing something else?

Pretty sure the B779’s are replacing the B77W’s

I do find it odd that’s the A359 is also getting a regional config - is that not a waste of a long haul aircrafts capability? 787-10 makes sense, but 359 confuses me

Some routes just don't justify having a 787-10 on it and the A330s are on their way out so this is a way for them to streamline their fleet whilst slowly increasing capacity.

737MAX, A350-900, 787-10, 77W (replaced by 777-9) and A380.
SQ will have a pretty simple fleet when they're done.

I probably overcomplicated what I meant.

Agreed that the 779s are most likely going to replace the 77Ws -- I was just asking how 86 on-order frames are going to replace 40 A333s and 772s. If the A359s and 787-10s are going to replace the 77Ws (meaning the 779s would replace A380s), too, even this means we're looking at 86 frames on-order to replace 67 existing frames.

The more likely replacement scenario is that 86 frames will replace 40, but this is a massive increase in capacity!

I assume some frames will be for Scoot.

SQ hasn’t just now started replacing their 772/E fleet, it’s been progressively happening as the A333s started arriving and has continued as the A359 and 78X did. In total the airline has had 52 of the -200 series. The 78X also replaces the remaining regional 773.

This seems like a large jump in capacity from Max to A359.

SQ is one of the airlines interested in 797...

If 797 is optimized for mid range flights like the original A300 and A310, then I think pretty much all the Asian airlines will end up buying it.

As to where all the extra A358 and 787-10 frames are going, some of them are obviously going to Scoot, but perhaps also Vistara. And whatever other airlines SIA or Temasek end up buying in the future...

I feel like they have far too many A350s on orders. I just have no idea where they are going to fly that many of them. With the 787-10 if it comes down to it they can always transfer some to Scoot. We shall wait and see.

I think they won't be replacing their 77W anytime soon and the 77X is meant to complement with the other older 777s. The A330s are meant to be replaced by both the A350s and the 787-10 while the 772s by the A350. I think the additional aircraft are meant for expansion.
