EI 147 from Dublin was being towed into G-91 at SFO and the right wing had contact with a concrete post.

G-91 is located in a very tight corner. Photos look like the damage is minimal. Even looks like the return flight is going to operate with a 2.5 hour delay.

I once watched a 788 being pushed out from G91 which abuts the walkway between terminal and parking. The wingtip came inches from contacting the glass. Wing walker was watching it and stopped the tug just before contact. It took several back and forth rounds with the tug to straighten out and find the right angle to get the bird out of that tight spot. Usually I see AC A320s there due to the clearance. A 788 doesn't have a massive wingspan but that gate is definitely meant for smaller aircraft.

The 788 wingspan is nearly as long as a 747-400, perhaps a 15ft difference or am I mistaken?

Yes.
As for fault, I would guess the tug operator with wing walker. I believe Swissport is their ground handling.

Flight was eventually cancelled, not sure if there was more damage than expected or as a precaution to check

from the picture it is possible to see the tug...of course the tug can have arrived after the incident, but would say it was being tugged.

I just looked up gate G-91 on google maps, and it is amazingly tight indeed. Almost surprised they park A330s there.

The LEFT gear was about 30 feet RIGHT of centerline when it hit. Plenty of room for an A330, 787, or 767...but you have to follow the yellow line. That is the whole point of a tow in to a tight spot.

Indeed, very impressive. 777-200s are the largest aircraft certified for G91 right now, but in the 2000s, it was common to see 747-400s on the gate! No incidents, though it was a tight push with remote spots G103 and G104 occupied behind the terminal.
