Fake security at new Islamabad airport

Wed May 16, 2018 1:27 pm

I wonder if they know that stuff is fake. If it is, maybe they are using it purely as a means of deterrence instead of as an actual security device in which case it would make sense. Good thing they are using this stuff only in the parking lot and not in the terminal as the actual detection mechanism, because the latter would be a lot more concerning.

Some may but I would put money the people on the ground using them believe in them 100%

Unfortunately divining rods are now firmly in the scam bucket as plenty of evidence shows they don't do anything.

In the past I've seen the argument that these managed to get a foothold as dogs are viewed as 'dirty' in several middle east cultures. So people would rather use something like this then a trained animal.

You may also have the common misunderstanding that something built is has to be better at a task than something trained could be.

And finally we get fooled by security theatre just as much as anyone. All those backscatter x-ray machines and chemical sniffers? No evidence to show they actually catch anything. What does work? Training, x-ray baggage scanning, and metal detectors. Those have been shown time and time again to work.

There's gotta be a joke about TSA being fake security somewhere.

The problem is that it's not a joke.

I'm sure they work well. Just make sure the correct plastic "detector card" is inserted...

Exactly - or, more particularly, the joke is self-evident, and need not be independently expressed or embellished.

Seriously?! The divining rod scam again?!

How can people still get away with peddling this quackery and how are people so stupid as to actually buy them? I thought the British guy who sold these things as bomb detectors in Iraq was jailed for it - is he now operating in Pakistan or is this a copycat?

Somebody just now realized all this security theater is fake? Designed to make people like the author feel safe when they are literally doing nothing?

I'm not sure of the model, its probably a Bullsh*t 3000. Its a plastic case attached to an aerial, into which plastic cards are inserted.

No, but the impending "take out all your powders, underwear, and sore throat lozenges...and put each of them into a separate bin" will ;)
