Looks like an upgrade for the Auto show in Detroit.

Makes sense. Is Frankfurt (and Germany, for that matter) a big player in the auto industry? I could see a route like LHR or CDG receiving an A350, whether it be limited time, seasonal or year-round, but FRA kinda took me by surprise.

The 777s will be in the middle of their interior mods during this time so this makes since. Also on 3/31/19, LAX-SYD gets a reconfigured 777.

I agree, it's a bit odd that the German automakers are not participating first and foremost, I wonder what that's even about, as they have always been a large part of the show, and then for DL to upgrade the service? I think DL is trying to show its new product in the 1 INTL market from DTW it actually has competition in, during a high business time frame.

I haven't flown it myself, so I can't say, but all the people I have spoke to that have said they prefer DL330 over DL350 in business class at least. Of course this is not a scientific survey.
I can't imagine why anyone in coach would prefer the A350, either.

Yeah no, waste of aircraft. Only reason they fly one A350-900 on DTW-AMS is positioning between DTW-NRT and DTW-PEK as a DTW-NRT-DTW-AMS-DTW-PEK-DTW rotation requires four aircraft. Similar to NW's previous use of 747s on DTW-AMS and DTW-Japan.

I think we'd see DTW-CDG go to a 359 well before FRA.

Germany's definitely a big player in the auto industry. The curious part about this, though, is that while it could be an upgrade for the show, Audi, Mercedes, and BMW are all skipping the Detroit show in 2019. http://www.autonews.com/article/20180510/RETAIL03/180519969/audi-to-skip-2019-detroit-auto-show-joining-bmw-benz

While they are skipping their presence at the show, German suppliers and employees/exec from the mentioned automakers will still attend (to check out the competition at the very least).

You can probably guess what type of equipment I prefer, but the A350 sounds like a nice ride.

Definitely a smart move on Delta’s part! It would be nice to see some A350s on some routes that have a high-density/business traveler appeal, such as ATL-LHR and ATL-AMS. I sure hope Delta follows through with the full 25 they ordered!

I totally agree the A350 was purchased for long haul to Asia from the eastern part of the USA. Actually the title of this tread is very misleading the A350 is not taking over the Detroit-Frankfurt route.

Curiously, they downgraded all FRA flights to B763s. ATL and JFK used to be 764s, now FRA sees only 763s in Delta colors.

Why would delta put a higher cost airplane on a route like ATL-LHR when the 330 can do it easily?

Germany is a very big player in the auto industry but curiously Frankfurt isn’t really. With the exception of VW all the German brands are headquartered in the south so Munich would’ve been the more logical choice than Frankfurt. I am curious to see how long this holds though that’s for sure.

I’m also still surprised DL canceled their 787 order. It seems like they could have been put on new long and thin routes SEA-Asia or Australia or on select TATL routes.

The 787 would also be ideal for overseas routes from SLC and future long thin routes like MSP-PVG or PDX-ICN.
I agree that I don’t understand canceling it either.
