Good morning everyone. Can't believe it's May already.

Thought I'd kick things off this month with the report on Perth Now that PER Airport's new boss has official commenced his role.

With previous experience running the mining company FMG and seeing first hand how airport congestion affects both the economy and FIFO businesses, let's hope he can keep the recent changes coming.

A bit more of a business head will hopefully see the airport itself accommodating QF's wishes to have flights to JNB and CDG leave from T3, along with the LHR flight.

Fingers crossed :)

The plan is to run it for a year on a trial basis and see how things go so I have heard.

Apparently the first 3 flights from PER are going out full which I think is pretty good considering it’s one of the weakest months of the year

WA is long overdue for cheaper flights! But is it sustainable or just an attempt to spoil QF´s efforts on the non-stops? I am a fan of the ME3 (whoops, 2) for work reasons - as you will have noted from my posts - and always wondered about the variance/difference in price of a AU-EU flight versus an EU-AU flight!
QF is making a solid effort to innovate! PER prices are too high and need correcting. But I fear these ´full QR birds´ are there for one reason only and that is to trash QF´s efforts. And mid-term, I doubt this is in WA´s interest! EK will, infact is countering, so where does that leave us long term....... ??

The new SIN-SYD-CBR-SIN service (SQ 288) started today. I fly out on SQ288 on Friday night, so it'll be interesting to see the loads and the proportion of passengers ex SYD vs ex CBR.

A quick question that I haven’t seen covered off before.
QF codeshare on CZ to CAN and on MU to PVG, is there a reason why VA don’t on HU, GS and JD flights between Australia and China?

Is it because they’re to cities with little outbound market from AU, or any other reason. Just thinks it’s odd that VA codeshare on the HX flight (and vice vers) but not in the other HNA group flights given HNA’s financial interest in VA.

I believe that there are some restrictions with code-share exHKG to Mainland China, thus VA can only interline and cannot code-share. They would have done it by now if they could.

Well the 77W will hardly get a chance to stretch its legs during cruise before it needs to start the descent phase. The 77W will be the biggest airplane to fly a regular scheduled passenger route into and out of CBR.

That is unfortunate. I was going to fly ROK-TSV-POM because I could earn some points and fly a new airline. I will probably not now. Hopefully it doesn’t hurt Air Niugini too much, and can’t see the lack of a codeshare really helping VA.

Only positive is that QantasLink might resume CNS to POM service, though I can’t really see that happening.

The *exisitng* cose share is not affected, it was the proposed expansion that was knocked back. Basically there is no change to the status quo. This means that all flight that currently carry the codeshare will continue to do so.

QF have ordered 6 more B787-9s and will accelerate the retirement of the final B747s. All 747s to be retired by the end of 2020.

First of the new 787-9s is expected to arrive from late-2019.

So this will be a one for one replacement? I guess that they are confident that they will get permission for EDTO for JNB and SCL. Does the current utilisation of the 747 allow fro flights on PER-CDG as part of this order?

Given that these 6 789’s are due to arrive in the 2019/2020 financial year I would suspect that we may see some more come into the fleet towards the end of 2020, maybe even see the 787-10 start coming in with it firstly going on SYD-HND

I have to say I am dissapointed that QF wants to retire the 744 by 2020, I was hoping that they would at least keep them till September 2021 as that would make 50 years since the first 747 was delivered to QF

If I recall correctly, LATAM B787 flights to AKL and MEL operate with ETOPS 330? When QF replaces the B744 with the new 6x B789, will it also be certified by CASA at ETOPS 330? If so, that means SYD-JNB could operate pretty well too?

What could happen with capacity for the HND flight? Could we see double daily?

In other QF related news, third quarter update has been provided, QF is expected a profit before tax of around $1.55 to $1.6 billion

https://www.qantasnewsroom.com.au/media ... rter-fy18/

I guess other thing on more 789’s is QF said they wouldn’t order more until they were satisfied they could make money from them, I guess it can be said they are making money from them

LATAM currently has been subbing some of there AKL-SCL services down to the 788 from the 789 to try get around some of the currently 789 restrictions due to engine issues. NZ has removed the 789 from AKL-EZE since December, and now extended to September with an 77E until the 789 gets restrictions lifted.

Hey guys,
Re : 787 top up order...
No surprises with this order.
I suspect that while the 787-10 is looked upon with interest by QF, no decision to purchase will be made until the outcome of Project Sunrise is known. Perhaps a decision to order A350 super dooper long range planes for Project Sunrise may lead to a supplementary order for straight -900s or -1000s to provide extra capacity over and above the 787-9 for routes like HND? The 787-10 would seem to me to be a better compliment to the 777-8 super dooper long range for filling that gap than ordering straight 777-8s to fit between 787-9a and the heavily range-focused 777-8.
A related question....
Are the Dreamliner options/purchase rights that QF have easily and cheaply convertible between -9s and -10s (or even -8s)? I'm sure that QF would want to keep the widely-known 'cheap prices' it negotiated with Boeing all of those years ago IF QF decided to order -10s in future.
Cheers
Bunumuring

Cheers

The options QF have on the 787 are for any model be it the 788, 789 or 787-10

For more information go to the 787 blog and look for the tab 787 orders - unfirm & options

I guess other thing on more 789’s is QF said they wouldn’t order more until they were satisfied they could make money from them, I guess it can be said they are making money from them

Its a shame we wont see the 747 in the latest livery.

Good to see a 787 top-up, is it possible we could see SYD-HND become an a380?, the 787 seems too small for that route.

This is under discussion in the dedicated thread but it seems at this point it is unlikely as HND does not permit scheduled A388 movements and has several operational characteristics that make lifting those restrictions difficult.

Qantas has suspended all future growth international plans out of PER until there is a resolution on the PER-JNB flight

Good on Qantas for playing hard ball on this.... Perth airport seems to be so damn inflexible!

So as an airport you want more services and increase in tourism, yet Perth airport must think they can make money from DFO/Costco and parking.

BITRE figures for February are out. https://bitre.gov.au/publications/ongoi ... tions.aspx

Some really high load factors out there for what is meant to be a quiet month. The figures really underscore that:

- Perth Airport is protecting SA. The numbers for Batik are even worse (average 33% LF)
- QR's SYD-CBR-SYD flights probably only have 20-50 pax on it.
