Lufthansa to Swap A330 with B737 on DUS-EWR

Pretty interesting. I wonder what warranted the significant capacity decrease on this route.

Even more interesting, according to the article, is that LH is utilizing a 737 from PrivatAir (PV). Apparently, PV operated DUS-EWR for LH during a six year stretch about a decade ago. I'm surprised LH unions hadn't taken issue with this scheme.

The reason is quite simple!
Pilot shortage during the summer peak.

I feel like Lufthansa uses Privatair far too liberally. The hard product is a significant downgrade from their current product. Whilst I suppose DUS-EWR isn't particularity valuable to DLH, I cannot for the life of me understand why Lufthansa would swap FRA-JED from an A330 to a 737 during the hajj season, which will see the highest traffic JED will ever have

Can a 737 do this nonstop consistently?

This one can. PrivatAir Germany is using 737-700 BBJ, with C20Y66 config I believe (low density, high premium config).

Cheers,

In the summer, on a 737-700, with only 86 seats, yes. It's been done before.

May I ask, why LH put an A380 on DUS-EWR route in the first place?
Is really a so high occupancy route to justify such a big plane?

But they didn't. You've misread the posts above. Current operations use an A330, which is quite a bit smaller than an A380!

It’s a equipment change for the holiday season in August only with FRA-Jeddah and was already discussed somewhere.

With the TATL JV, I'm surprised the route wasn't transition to a UA 763 with a smaller a/c especially on the premium side.

Considering how LH is dropping the route in 2019 anyway, it is no wonder that it is treated as the stepchild.

Does UA have 763s to spare? Considering that they're currently sending planes through cabin refurbs, plus needing to cover for 777s going through the same, they might not have the capacity to spare.

I thought it was moving to EW in the Fall? Did those plans change?

it sure has the legs - Privatair operated a 737-700 (technically a BBJ) for KL on AMS-IAH with a blocktime of 11:20 - 44 lieflat C class seats. That was from 2005 until at least 2009; if I am not mistaken Privatair also operated SVG-IAH for SK at a given point in time
