WN 1380 LGA-DAL emergency landing at PHL, 1 fatality

Anyone know more?

Fox5 NY has a webcam on it on the Facebook page - not much to see other than the usual array of emergency crews.

Flight started at LGA...

One report I see says shrapnel entered the aircraft and injured at least one passenger. Yikes.

With all of the bickering that occurs amongst fanboys here, it's nice to see the AA stair truck and buses out assisting. I'm certain WN would return the favor at BWI or DEN.

The aircraft appears to be N772SW, a 73G built in 2000.

According to a passengers father, the shrapnel from the engine broke a window, which caused a “violent” decompression and a women was partially sucked out of the plane. Pax had to pull her back in.

Saw a report saying jet engine parts went straight through one of the windows and hit a woman. Also caused rapid depressurization.

Pretty terrifying if true.

They are reporting on CNN that pieces of the engine breached the cabin and injured a passenger. If that is true that's a serious incident!

I'm going to bet that she was hanging out the window when the plane landed.

Reminds me of this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_A ... light_5390
The captain was sucked out the window when the windshield failed. The FO landed the plane and all were shocked to find the captain alive when the plane landed. I'm hopeful that this is a similar result.

Ten injured, one critical.

Also, FR24 showing N772SW doing BNA-LGA(WN2093) was diverted to JRB this morning. Maybe a data glitch.

JRB is a heliport, so yeah, obviously a glitch.

Holy cow, that is serious. Hoping the critical person can make a full recovery.

On another note, people think i'm a bit silly because i don't pick seats parallel to the engine. I'm either in the front or in the back, for this rare reason.

The extraordinary statement of the fox news story is that it reported that the injured passenger was removed from the aircraft THROUGH THE WINDOW. Up thread it was reported that she was almost sucked out of the plane. I have to wonder whether she completed the flight partially out the window, and emergency personnel though it would be less damaging to her to pull her all the way out.

Scary stuff.

I bet that the pax on this flight will listen to the "keep your seat belts fastened" in the future.

So the plane landed, one person was injured, and everyone else is ok. Flight crew are trained to execute emergency landings. It's part of their job.

I have never thought about that on a jet aircraft. But I was on a dash 8 once right in line with the prop and couldn't help but think if that thing comes off I'm going first...I starred at the prop for most of the flight.

Yikes, yikes, yikes. Scary day for these passengers.

The extraordinary statement of the fox news story is that it reported that the injured passenger was removed from the aircraft THROUGH THE WINDOW. It probably was less damaging because pushing her back inside would probably have higher risks for her head and neck depending on how far out of the window she was. I have to wonder how far out any adult human could possibly go since the window frame looked to be in tact. I can't imagine a human torso fitting in that thing even with the crazy conditions of flying at FL325.

Side Note: The link to the story on Fox29 shows a picture of passengers wearing the oxygen masks only over their mouth. Isn't that supposed to fit over your nose and mouth, hence "place the mask over your nose and mouth and secure the elastic band behind your head"?

Something like this has happened before about fourty years ago. The captain of a BA Bac 1-11 was sucked out and his colleagues held him at his legs until they had landed since they could not pull him back.

Would be interesting to see the left side of the aircraft.

Let’s hope the injured woman will recover from her injuries.

Looking at that picture, they had an AED out. That’s not a good sign for the passenger.

Has anyone looked at FR24? Their decent appeared very controlled and not erratic, as some passengers/media seem to be stating.

That's what I call an un-contained engine failure. Lets not assume its a MRO specific issue. There are a lot of reasons this could happen.

On a positive note, it's good to see how well the aircraft held together after the uncontained failure. It could have easily turned into a huge loss of life.

The heart attack passenger and the passenger who was partially sucked out might not be the same person. Multiple injuries.

I am confident that this was a controlled but very rapid descent. As we all know, when there is an explosive decompression, one of the pilots' primary tasks is to bring the aircraft down to an altitude at which the pax can breathe more normally (and in this case make the pressure differential such that the partially-ejected pax can be pulled back in). So it's gonna be fast, but controlled. Of course, most pax don't know this, hence the "We're going down!" stuff. The pilots aren't going to say anything; I wonder if it would be helpful for the f/as to be trained perhaps to announce something about the rapid descent. There may be a million reasons not to have them do this, but there are at least a few reasons that it would be helpful.

They test these engines for failure. But it seems like when they fail in real life they are uncontrolled more often than not. That was a detonation. Lucky there wasnt more structural damage to the wing and fuselage.

That's why UA has FlightTest operations, in air test flights after heavy maintenance.

It looks as though this happened at 32,000 feet. It’s a minor miracle that only that window failed.

My anecdotal guess is that if it was contained it would be a non-event and we'd never hear about it.
