Delta To Replace 747 & 767 Fleet

Mon Apr 16, 2018 7:44 pm

Interesting blurb on AWIN (AvWeek):

Delta Air Lines plans to issue a request for proposals (RFP) for new longhaul aircraft that will replace all of the airline’s Boeing 747-400s and a significant part of the 767-300ER fleets.
The RFP will go out before the end of the month and Delta could decide before the end of the year.

The article goes on to say Delta plans to look at four options: The Airbus A350-900 and -1000, all three models of the Boeing 787, the current versions of the A330 and a re-engined A330.

Note the conspicuous missing 797. The same comment probably applies:

Delta is not looking at the 777X. “We don’t want experimental airplanes,” says Anderson. “We are not interested in it.”

That must be an old article. Delta already selected its 747 and 767 replacements: A350 and A330NEO. Plus Anderson is no longer with Delta.

Wait what? They've already found replacements with the A330-900neo and A350-900 which have been ordered and some A350s already being delivered. This is also in addition to their cancellation of the Northwest 787 order.

It'll be interning to see what they order to replace the Convair 880s.

If that's really the OP's linked article, this thread should be locked.

I think DL plans to order the 727-200 to replace their 880s. They need to start planning for long-term replacements for the DC-8s too. The -61s still have some life in them with the CFM -71 engine replacement program.

Considering that DL has already retired the 747s, it should be obvious that article is out of that. I kind of think the OP meant this as a joke, although I don’t get it. Took me a minute to get the re-engined Caravelle joke too, but I’m kind of slow.

Anyone know if they have a plan to replace the DC-9s?

Am I the only one who thinks DL could use the A35J ? Seems those are better 744
replacements than the 359's IMHO

Naaah...in that case, his user name would have been tmtrvlr. Since it is glbltrvlr, I guess he's getting his news from KCNA, the North Korean News Agency.

Sigh. It was a banner headline on AWIN. I didn't look at the article date. It was indeed 2014. :(

Why?

They didn't want all the extra seats of the 744, as their execs directly stated numerous times, and their A359s seat over 300.

I wouldn't be shocked if someday they get the A35K, but for now, they have no desire for anything of that size.

I hope they go with an A359/A339 combo.

They'd better hurry up with those 747 replacements considering they've been gone for half a year now

Good Evening,

I know I am going to get raked over the coals for this but who cares. I think Delta should be ashamed of themselves. An American airline not buying American products employing American workers.

So the folks that work for Airbus @ Mobile manufacturing American-made planes are somehow less American? Aliens from another planet, perhaps?

Not at all. Being outright dumb is a human right. Tell me...what manufacture of aircraft should, say, Avianca buy? Or Kenya Airways?...

Delta is seeking to place a wide-body order to replace their L1011 and MD11 fleets. Hoping they choose A330/777 combo. Share the love among the aircraft manufacturers and aircraft spotters love variety :D .

As mentioned, Airbus have a factory in Mobile. 787 fuselages are made in Italy. So many Airbus components are made in the US and Boeing components in Europe that you really can’t consider them products of one or even a handful of nations anymore.
