New longest 77W flight soon - Philippine Airlines MNL-JFK

Mon Apr 09, 2018 1:52 pm

Philippine Airlines will in October start 4 x weekly nonstop MNL - JFK flight.
I believe this is the longest nonstop with a 77W.

Yes it would be the longest 77W flight at 7404nm, currently the longest 77W flight is EY on AUH-LAX at 7291nm. Of course neither of these are the longest 777 flights, that goes to QR's DOH-AKL at 7848nm

PR will be getting the improved version of the A350-900 soon too, is that correct? Will the A350 eventually take over this route?

Didn't PAL introduce MNL-YYZ a while back, only to revert back to the stop in YVR? For a market that is notoriously price sensitive, MNL-JFK is brave, even with the economics of the A359!

I was thinking the same thing. I wish them the best of luck and hope yields are good enough. JFK is certainly much more high yielding than YYZ, and both have large Filipino communities so maybe it could work out.

PR118 is still loaded in GDS as non-stop MNL-YYZ

YYZ has been non-stop for a few months now, it never reverted.

QB737/whywhyzee, thank you for confirming. I'm not sure why I had it in my head that they had withdrawn the direct service. I guess it is less than daily. Does anybody know the planned frequency of JFK?

OP says 4 weekly.

I must admit, I was sceptical when they started MNL-LHR with 77Ws as they have so much competition from CX, SQ and the ME3. After downgauging to the A343, they are back with the 77W on an increased frequency. When checking fares, they always command a premium for the direct service. So, just maybe, they can make JFK work. I wish them all the best.

What’s going on with PAL and the A350?
Wasn’t it supposed to do both YYZ and JFK late this year? But now both are scheduled on the 77W...?

I know why you did
In 2012 PAL launched MNL-YYZ nonstop, but they had to block a few rows on the return leg due to head winds going back to MNL. This meant loss of revenue, so they quickly decided to make it a tag-on from YVR to avoid the blocking of rows.
But quite recently PAL gained rights to cross Siberian air space, which enabled them to re-launch the return leg to MNL once again nonstop, but this time without blocking any rows. So MNL-YYZ-MNL has been nonstop again since December 2017.

Interesting on the 9pm arrival time.
Are they still going to be going out of Terminal 1 or moving over to 4 or somewhere else? As I recall, it's a full house at 9pm.

The schedule is probably a placeholder till the a350 delivery details are known 100%...

Edit: the a350 will indeed start the jfk non stop: http://atwonline.com/airports-routes/ph ... aul-routes

How does this affect MNL-YVR?

If there are delays, that 15 hours will be a bit uncomfortable in Y. Yes the seat pitch is 33 inches, but it's 3-4-3 in Y with a 17-inch wide seat.
