American Airlines orders 47 additional 787's (22 788's and 25 789's), cancels A350 order

Fri Apr 06, 2018 7:57 pm

Boeing web site says AA has placed an order for 47 additional 787s, but upon clicking on the news it shows an error. it’s the order firmed??

Maybe 787-9s or 787-10s to use as 777-200 replacements? AA currently has exactly 47 772s, and they’re starting to hit 20 years old.

Last week it was reported than an order may be forthcoming: https://www.bizjournals.com/seattle/new ... -a330.html

Perfect replacements for the older 772s and A333s. 89 787s at one airline. Wow.

If I remember correctly Delta ordered their E190's from Boeing.

Yep I bet you're right. 772 replacements.

But what about A330 replacements? And growth?

Yes, slightly larger than ANA's 83

And what about the last remaining 767s? Those are leaving sooner than the 772s will. American has 23 or 24 767s still remaining in the fleet, it looks like they will be leaving the fleet at the same time as the A333s will, if not at the same time not long after the A333s leave.

According to Boeing's order and delivery page, ANA has 83 with 20 yet to be delivered. So, AA's 89 will eventually surpass that.

Etihad looks to be the next closest with 71, however they only have 19 operating and 52 are still undelivered.

This.

The 772s just finished up a CIP program over the last few years including new lay flat J, new Y seats and PTV/power/wifi throughout. They have plenty of life left.

Well, 24 767 + 22 A330 = 46. Thats pretty much what this order is. Hmmm..

I think you're right. It looks like at this point Delta and United will be the only two US based airlines operating the A350 (Delta is already). It is now becoming evident, although still not 100% sure, American will not be taking the A350.

Wonder if someone's going to be in trouble - possible that Boeing leaked it before it was made official. Do they have to file something with the SEC before an official announcement has made; maybe someone at Boeing jumped the gun.

Hopefully it comes to fruition anyway. With the completing Airbus products (A330NEO, for example) ruled out and doubts cast over the viability of the small A350 order, a further 787 order was/is really a matter of "when", not "if".

The website update was probably pre-loaded by the marketing team timed for release after the market closes. But the press release must have been delayed and someone forgot to cancel the website refresh. It's Friday afternoon... they just want to go home :cheeky:

There are 47 777-200ER in use, 22 A350-900s on order.

11 787-9 are in the backlog and 40 A330's/ 767 are being replaced in th next few years. .

IMO a combined order of ~40 787-9/-10s and A350-900/1000's is on the agenda.

Interested to hear from AA what aircraft these 787s are replacing, I still believe the MOM is in the cards for AA to eventually take over the 767's role in the fleet. Only issue is short term the AA 767s are in horrible shape interior wise outside of J.

The A330neo has been reported to be out of the running and the A350 has been deferred until 2020.

That was exactly what I was thinking was whether this somehow was the old article, but appears to not be.

The 767s and the A330-300s no. Those are leaving in a not too distant future. But the A330-200s are staying, American is not getting rid of them at least not in the near future.

As far as the 767 fleet is concerned, I wouldn't be shocked if they're waiting to see what Boeing does with this proposed MOM/NMA/797 program. If AA believes that the MOM/NMA/797 is an appropriate replacement for the 767 - or, for that matter, the 757 - as opposed to what Airbus is offering, then I wouldn't be shocked if they take that direction.

As of 1730 EDT, the lead story on Boeing's website is not the proposed AA purchase of 47 Dreamliners. So, either someone jumped the gun on that press release or this might've been a false rumor.

Per airfleets.net, American has 47 combined 767 and 330 right now.

23 763 @ 209 seats
15 332 @ 260 seats
09 333 @ 291 seats
47

American's 787 seat counts -

788 @ 226 seats
789 @ 285 seats

I theorize that this order is to replace all of these, even the 332, to stream line the wide-body fleet. My guess is a mix of 17 more 788 to cover the routes where the capacity of the 789 is not needed, and 30 789 for the balance of the order.

I actually think AA has a board meeting early next week and they would have to approve it. So a tentative deal may be signed but just not ready for public consumption.

Good for Boeing. Good also for Airbus that they get money from AA without having to give anything in return.

I could see either a 788/789 mix for the 767/A330's, or a 789/78J mix for the 77E's. Either way the 789 is probably in (even tho a 47-strong 788 or 78J order would be amazing).

This is a huge order if it indeed comes to fruition. They currently have 58 options if my memory serves right. So what are they doing with the remaining 11? Does the -8 in the press release mean anything? Because if they’re getting some -8s then these are likely 767/332/333 replacements. If it’s just -9s or if -10s are involved then it’s 772 most likely replacements. Depending on the variants ordered, we could have our answer to the future of the A350 order. A350s won’t replace 767s and 332s.

In addition to replacing older 772s and 763s, we may see more routes similar to RDU-LHR, such as PIT/CLE/CVG-LHR.

MoM and A321LR could replace the 757s and some of the 767s
787-8 could replace some the 767s and the A332s
787-9 could replace the 772s and the A333s (which need to go soon)
A350-1000 could replace the 77Ws.

The "possible" AA MoM order would make up the difference in planes they for widebody replacements, but they need planes for growth too, so expect more widebodies unless they order a boatload of MoMs.

Wow. Huge news. I wonder if theyll go for 78J now.

Also, still no word on smaller replacements? 797?

Why would there be discussion on a 797 when it's still just a concept?
