Talk about handing it To EK and QR
Just read EK are looking to upguage other service to A388
Even QF must be rubbing their hands

I think its more to do with Etihad as a company that Perth traffic.
Doesnt help VA either with their frequent flyer passengers they will all be off to Singapore Air going to Europe.

From Ausbt.com.au - sounds like more to come
A spokesman for Etihad Airways confirmed the axing of Perth flights to Australian Business Traveller, saying "the cancellation of the Perth route is one of several adjustments that we are making to our network in 2018 in order to improve system profitability."

It’s likely a bit of both, however EY’s struggles are likely weighted higher of those.

EY are going to continue to struggle if they continue to cut, as their network is losing feed all over the place

This may continue to see a slide for them, however if QR get more rights they will certainly be in a very difficult position.

If MEL gets a 2nd daily frequency from QR, I think we can say goodbye to EY’s 2nd daily, and if BNE is launched by
QR then it wouldn’t exactly leave much room to move for EY either.

I still expect EY’s SYD 2x daily A380’s to see some capacity reductions over time, especially when there will be a point that they will need to maximise yields. They used to have a premium brand position to work from, but that has evaporated.

Pax numbers are one thing, but yields are another.

The reality is that sustaining many routes they currently operate will be a challenge for EY though, especially as routes continue to be cut.

Thanks, just to add I have just heard that there is talk that SA will switch PER from A340’s to A330’s, not sure when this would take effect though

I have seen recently a couple of SAA flights into perth which were A330s
Surely the A340s are getting a bit past it anyways

That was about a month ago, think they were trial runs, agree the A340’s are past it, the onboard product i have been told us pretty average

Anyway there seems to be quite a bit of international activity for PER at the moment.

Been on both A332 and A343, the latter is ancient (but A332 is not too much better). Their A333 product tho is nice with Vantage XL, but I guess they won't fly this thing here anytime soon. However the onboard service is meh at the finest - even the snack can run out in C during the middle of a 14hr flight with 3 people seated.

True even when you look at booking fflyers with VA you have to pay a small fortune when you go on Etihad now. Compared to SQ which is next to nothing. As I use fflyers I wouldnt of used them just for the fees.

Sad to see EY leave, heading to/from PER/EU regularly , they were a great option. Especially on the European Side. Book a full fare Y, then wait until 2-3 days before departure and bid a couple of hundred bucks on a J upgrade in their auction , that always came good! Very cheap way to come home in comfort!!
That reminds me of that totally crazy VA idea last year (PER-AUH) , which I thought was totally nuts, but I think it never took of. Any chance that subject get´s revisited now with this news?? (I still think it´s nuts, but hey.....)

They really have cancelled quite a few routes over the years. Bigger ones include SFO, DFW, IAH, CAN, GRU, CPH, DOH (politics), VCE. Looks like EY are retreating to a Asia / Australia (well East Coast) to Europe Connector.

Haha yeah. And also Tehran, Shenzen, Vienna, Cape Town. Looks like they are relying heavily on India surprise surprise.
I wonder if Qatar will smell blood in the water here, If they can renegotiate the bilateral they can start BNE.

Woah... did not see that coming especially seeing as they already announced a downgrade to the 332.

Disappointing considering PER was the second Australian airport to receive all 3 ME carriers, after MEL. I mean EK used to be thrice daily, so it seems maybe the market is shifting back to Asia (and QF direct to LHR).

Hopefully this enables QR to run the 380 year round.

QR A380 was only running to end of NS18 then going back to 77W, I have been told they were going to trial it for a year but havent seen anything to that effect yet. EY pulling out probably changes that. While EK may going double daily A380 in the future they more also bring back the third daily frequency, I have heard that they never relinquished the slots when they canned it a couple of years ago. It will also be interesting to see where the capacity from EY goes

I do wonder which airline group is going to offload their VA stake first considering their own financial woes, EY or HNA?

Of course the usual suspects of those two stakes are either SQ or DL. Although both groups usually don't comment on those rumours, with the former that's usually talked more, the later hasn't exactly ruled out involvement in the future.

Were EY maxed out on the bilateral? If yes I wonder if we might see EY up its frequency on SYD-PER now it has another 'slot' to use.

That’s not correct it’s 154 frequencies per week to the 4 main ports, outside of those it’s unlimited such as ADL

I think you will find us 'Sand gropers' can operate A330 internationally, and you will find us 'Sand Gropers' operate quiet a few different A332/333 flights internationally throughout the international network, as a matter of fact, only last week, 2 A330's to HKG were operated by Short Haul crew.
Not to mention when the seasonally A330's operate PER-AKL and PER-SIN they are operated by 'Sand Gropers'.

And to put a technicality in there, if a Short Haul Crew operated the 4 X Week PER-JNB, the total duty time would in fact be shorter than our current PER-SIN-PER duty.

Correct me if I’m wrong but not too long after the 330s arrived, a significant chunk of Asia 330 flying was moved to short-haul crew to save costs as at that time pre-QCCA due to allowances shorthaul crew were cheaper. Also not a contributing factor but at the same time long haul crew did the SYD-PER on a 744 cheaply too.

I am hopefully for the PER-JNB, however I am skeptical around the MEL crew operating it. Generally crew tech and cabin, along with ground staff are the last to know and are informed when a press release comes as they have such high contact with passengers and can’t kept such things confidential for long.

Sidenote - Is there a 330 tech crew base in PER, and BNE? 789 is MEL only at this stage, 744 is SYD only, 380 is SYD only? 738 is PER,SYD,MEL,BNE- ADL?

Yes, there is an agreed split on who operates the A330 as it is neither deemed a SH aircraft nor a LH aircraft. There is a A330 Tech Crew base in PER along with a newly formed B789

With D7 pulling their afternoon departure from PER, MH can surely justify upgrading the MH125/126 service to a A332/333.

It's also a distinctly sub-standard product compared to what metal they fly to other Aussie ports.

Cheers I had a quick look at the bilaterial during my break but couldn't seem to find a figure.

Of the 154 frequencies (22 daily) as of 01/OCT it appears

- EK use 84 frequencies (SYDx28, MELx21, BNEx21, PERx14)
- EY use 35 frequencies (SYDx14, MELx14, BNEx7)

A total of 119 frequncies leaving 35 unallocated or 5 daily. So doen't seem to be bilateral issue.

Found the bit from article in Feb 2018

Meanwhile, six A330-200s leased from AerCap will arrive on a staggered basis starting from the second quarter through the third. The airline will deploy them on routes to Mumbai, Delhi, Cheenai, Bangalore, Dhaka, Perth, Kathmandu, Shanghai, Denpasar, and Auckland. Previously used by the now defunct Air Berlin, the A330-200s are on dry lease for six years and will replace six 737-800s now scheduled for return to their lessors.

AusBT is reporting that QF PER-JNB will begin on 7th December, operate 4 weekly Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

QF65 will depart PER at 1245, no arrival time into JNB made yet but would arrive around 1745-1800 time meaning it would arrive at a similar time to QF63 from SYD
QF66 Departs JNB at 2225 and arrives in PER at 1400 the following day

QF65 will depart PER at 1245, no arrival time into JNB made yet but would arrive around 1745-1800 time meaning it would arrive at a similar time to QF63 from SYD
QF66 Departs JNB at 2225 and arrives in PER at 1400 the following day

Why is AusBT seemingly getting an exclusive on this instead of Qantas Newsroom breaking it first?

AusBT article references "Internal airline schedules sighted by Australian Business Traveller but yet to be made public" so probably not an 'exclusive' handed to them by QF.

Unable to open the link at work, I'm sorry.

Any news on where the flight will originate? (MEL?) Even with a return trip across the country that's still a lot of under utilised hours.

No there's nothing in there about it starting/finishing in MEL, I guess we will just have to wait until its announced

When Ausbt put this out on twitter they only tagged the 6PR drive show, which airs 3-6pm so I wonder if we will hear something about it then

No problem, thanks anyway.

The roughly 22 hours gives it plenty of time to get to elsewhere in SE Asia and back too. Would be interesting to see QF restart PER-SIN to feed onto the A388 flight ex MEL for those that don't want to fly direct across the planet.

But if we consider it as 22 hours plus a day because of the 4x weekly, maybe they're eyeing off somewhere new. I can hope I guess. Will keep an eye on announcements and schedules.

The planes will just flow through the domestic network as usual, doubt we will see any new A330 flights between PER and Asia. QF already elected to make PER-SIN double daily using 738s rather than bringing A330s back.

That would be the A380 ex SYD (MEL is a terminating service), and QF has (a) double daily PER-SIN on B738 and (b) double daily EK PER-DXB on which to put passengers who would rather not take QF9/10.

I agree with qf002 that it'll most likely be a domestic tag that brings the aircraft into / out of PER, perhaps with the QF65/66 flight numbers all the way, perhaps not. I think this might strengthen the case for year-round PER-AKL, but I don't see an A330 service from PER to Asia at this stage.

While I agree with what you have said, I think the only 2 options within Asia QF would consider flying to from PER would be HKG and NRT, the second daily service to SIN has just started in the past couple of days. HKG would be unlikely due to slots and the preference for more HKG flights from the east coast which would leave NRT, which is always possible but it would be a 10 hour flight each way not taking into ground time so the 2 flights would use more than one frame. I would say maybe AKL is in with a chance for a 3 weekly service but in all likelihood they will just flow through the domestic network

No problem,

I had completely discounted the second 738 to Singapore!

I'd say more to do with improving return in capital metrics rather than any asset 'stripping' to pay for new aircraft

Lufthansa reports 40% of all booking of the recently reinstated SIN-MUC are from Australia.

Additionally LH has seen over 10% increase in sales from Australia since forming its JV with SQ
