Rumor: New AA Route Announcement from LAX

Tue Mar 27, 2018 1:43 am

Word on the street (internal source) is AA will be announcing a new route served out of LAX tomorrow (03/27). According to what has been said AA will be the first US Carrier to fly to this destination nonstop.

Let the speculation commence!

Doubt it will happen, but why would AA serve a route out of LAX that's "never been served before" rather than launching it at their flagship hub of DFW?

because demand ex-LAX (the #1 O/D airport in the country) is significantly higher. as an example (and i doubt this will happen), LAX-SGN would make more sense than DFW-SGN because the vietnamese community and business ties are in LA, not dallas.

JAX, ORF, SDF, GRR, RIC, ALB, CHS, BHM, RSW, and MSN are the top 10 U.S. destinations that are not currently served nonstop from LAX.

The lack of nonstop service to LAX from SDF is a huge hole in the Louisville market, and Louisville is one of the largest U.S. cities without nonstop service to LAX. AA could add SDF-LAX nonstop service in order to fill in a huge hole in the SDF market.

The OP didn’t say “never been served before.” He said “first US carrier” on the route. This could mean a route that already has service by someone else.

[facetious]or it could mean they’re launching LAX-PER to feed QF’s PER-LHR nonstop[/facetious]

AA actually has nonstop service to AKL, SYD, and HND from LAX but not from DFW. It will not be the first time that AA launches nonstop service from LAX to a destination that it does not serve nonstop from DFW.

First to US carrier fly nonstop from LAX or first to fly nonstop from anywhere? If the latter, that would eliminate basically all US domestic destinations.

Perhaps a seasonal LAX - CHC service? AA seemed to be happy with LAX - AKL over the New Zealand summer, up-gauging it to a 789.

I can hope ... :bouncy:

The only large Pacific rim country which has not had service from LAX would be Russia: LAX - VVO?

“First US carrier” to fly the route nonstop would imply international destination. Only US carriers can fly domestic with traffic rights so nobody would use that jargon for a domestic route.

Have my doubts about EZE and SCL, Latam is on the SCL route and they depend heavily on connections out of SCL. Can’t imagine two airlines on that route. EZE pax can be routed through DFW, yields would be garbage.

Also UA flew EZE and Pan Am did SCL from LAX, so neither one of those would be a first.

Really? When did UA fly to EZE nonstop from LAX? Pan Am used to fly to EZE via SCL way back in the day.

While I agree in theory, you are too dismissive of the Vietnamese community in Dallas. Its still the 4th largest in the US ahead of places like DC and Seattle.

Also, theres almost no business ties between Vietnam and the US including LA. Thats why there hasn't been any service there. Garbage yields due to it all being VFR.

Same for CHS. World Airways flew DC-10s twice per week CHS-LAX in the mid 1980s.

Isn't CAN a Category 1 airport under the US/China bilateral? If so, then there are no more slots for US carriers to serve that route.

OP is unclear whether or not this would be the first route or destination served by a US carrier. If it's the first route served, then maybe LAX-TPE/ICN? NW might have flown LAX-SEL back in the day though. If it's the first destination, then who knows? I don't think FUK or CTS have ever been served by a US carrier. It could be any number of interior Chinese cities. All these places are about as likely as AA doing 3x daily LIT to NRT on an A380.

Yes and no. CAN is Category 1 but CAN has either 7 or 14 frequencies carved out just for the use for CAN.

Having said that EZE, SCL, SGN, CAN, BKK would all be a total blood bath. Even Delta/United would burn money on SGN/CAN/BKK.

In addition to new LAX service, with Brazil picking up again in a major way, AA will be returning to some of the Brazilian markets it exited later this year. I would think Porto Alegre and Recife come first given the market size is largest from those two.

Sometime about an exponentially larger market, with more demand to..... um, everywhere?

Antarius wrote:

A traditionally low-yield market, in proximity to HKG, with multiple nonstops by two carriers with the primary point of sale?
Never say never, but that one would certainly be a shocker.

I could see BKK.

"First US carrier to fly non-stop" to me implies that there had been service by a US carrier there before, just not with non-stop to the US. So basically I'd look at places that had been served by UA or NW/DL from the NRT hub.

I could see MNL or SGN as a longshot, although the heavily VFR nature of these markets would mean AA might not make any money on these routes.

I really doubt the capacity difference between LAX-BNE warrants another OW flight. Somehow I think this isn't going to be a earth shattering announcement.

Yes but this is about LAX, AA, and a route never flown by a US carrier before. Whether LAX-PPT has had a nonstop on a US carrier before is the question.

I would assume having a tie to a JV or close partner to feed the flight. PER? BNE? 2 weekly to RAR? (kidding).

LAX-EZE X number of days a week
LAX-GRU reduces to X number of days a week

e.g. EZE//GRU will now share the same set of aircraft

Yes, that is the question. I don't know the answer. I simply tossed my guess into the ring with PPT. If a US carrier has, indeed, flown LAX - PPT before, then my guess isn't valid.

Maybe because they already fly to this destination from the DFW hub. If indeed it is EZE, no American carrier has ever flown it nonstop. AR did with the A340 in 2000-2001.

BKK would seem to be too long & low yielding. I'm trying to think of places that would have some yields.
