BA down to 1x daily on BOM-LHR

Sat Mar 24, 2018 2:57 pm

Since this past Monday, British Airways has only been operating 1 daily BOM-LHR flight on the B77E.

The remaining flight is BA138, which is the night flight out of BOM. The other flight, BA198, was operated on a 77E or 77W and departed in the early afternoon for an evening arrival at LHR.

Does this decrease in frequency reflect 9W's success on the route (they now operate 3 daily 77W on the route), or does it reflect that relative business demand in BOM vs other Indian cities is not as high as it used to be?

Right now, BA operate 1x daily to both BLR and BOM on the 77E. AF will soon transfer BOM to JN while keeping its own metal on the BLR route. Finally, LH operates the B748 to BLR but the B744 to BOM. Now granted, all these BLR routes don't have competition from other carriers, but it is nonetheless interesting to see how BOM is starting to see some declines in frequency/hard-product while frequencies are maintained at other cities (including DEL, which has 2 daily BA flights to LHR, one on 744 and one on 77E).

Or, people connecting on the ME3.

Not surprising at all, between Jet's 3 flights to LHR, and people connecting to the US hating BA's J class, compared to pretty much anything (I know of friends using QR cos they get the miles too), it was coming for a long time. I suppose B787 problems are compounding the availability of aircraft in the network. Let's see if it returns by summer.

This is just BA managing its slot portfolio at Heathrow. Many frequencies across a variety of routes take a 1-2 week break at some point over the winter. BA199 should be back up running tomorrow.

There has been no significant increase in ME3 bilaterals for 3 years now.
Yes could be a different thing if they are unfairly carrying more connecting pax than O&D pax

A quick search on BA.com answers your question.

BA operates BOM-LHR 2x daily:

- BOM 03:15 - LHR 07:50 BA138 daily
- BOM 13:10 - LHR 18:25 BA198 daily

Therefore MAVMI is right:

This is just BA managing its slot portfolio at Heathrow. Many frequencies across a variety of routes take a 1-2 week break at some point over the winter. BA198/199 should be back up running tomorrow.

BA has lost a significant share of premium business on both POS. Indian corporates are focussed on 9W, EK, and even AI. Lot of UK corporates have shifted to ME3.

Possibly, especially since 9W also offers connectivity on DL/VX from LHR.

In addition, possibly decline in connecting traffic on BA out of BOM. So truly O/D traffic from London.

This is just BA managing its slots

If any airline was to drop BOM-LHR, i would assume it would be Air India, as it has odd arrival and departure times compared to everyone else

The danger of single data point extrapolating is witnessed above in this thread. Haha

Don't underestimate the effect of dropping a BOM.
