Dc10 /L1011/B747 passenger airlines

Fri Mar 23, 2018 9:10 am

At their peak which passenger airlines operated the most DC10, Tristar and 747 Classics respectively?

In other words, who were the biggest individual operators of each type ?

In terms of passenger only. The most DC10 was American Airlines closely followed by United and then Continental.

And I believe Delta was largest TriStar operator followed by Eastern.

Finally for 747 Clssics I don’t have the numbers to hand at all but I’d guess BA, KL or Pan Am. not sure though.

Just to add to the discussion, which airlines operated all 3 of these types at the same time?
I know that DL did, but only had a small fleet of the 747 & DC-10s, with 5 of each type. I recall that the DC-10s were leased from UA due to the delayed delivery of the L-1011.

IIRC, DL, UA and PA all operated the three types simultaneously. PA got DC-10s from their merger with National, and UA got some L-1011s from PanAm when they bought either LHR or the Pacific routes.

Edit: just found this photo on Google (the DC-10 has a Canadian registration) https://goo.gl/images/X2bWm7

3rd on this list must have either been AC or CX.

CO really? CO operated more DC-10s at their peak quantity in the fleet than NW did?

PA, UA, EA and BA are the only other ones I can think of/am aware of.

Yes on DC10 NW was 4th behind AA, UA and CO.

Caledonian (after BA took over B-Cal, and renamed their British Airtours charter unit in 88) had 1 742, 6 DC-10's, and a number of TriStars in their fleet.

I believe IB and SV also operated all three, not sure if they were at the same time though. British Caledonian operated all three also, but not sure the L10 and DC10 were at the same time.

That is true for IB as they briefly had a couple of leased L-10s in '97-98 while they didn't retire the D10s until 2000.

As for SV, while I remember the DC-10 (but weren't theirs freighters?), I have zero recollection of them ever operating L10s, even on a short-term lease.

Oops! SV as in Saudia. I got SV and SU (Aeroflot) mixed up. I was thinking SU.

For SV, they did have a single DC-10 for quite a long time. Although, wasn't it part of the VIP fleet?

In fact come to think of it, SV's 1011 fleet may have been the largest outside of the US.

From my very brief check SV operated 18 Tristars but I think BA is largest outside of US with 32. There maybe another though. BA larger than SV though.

Don't forget didn't Delta acquire a fleet of DC10s (about 8 or 9) -10s when they took over Western?

ANA had a reasonably large Tristar fleet for a non US carrier as I recall too.
