To answer the yearly question: no, schools don't pay for the flights themselves.

To compound that, the cheerleaders and pep band are also part of the charter which as you stated, is paid for by the NCAA and not the teams themselves.

Most likely driving; it's under 350 miles which is the official cutoff. They may get a flight home if they lose since there will be a charter on call in the event that LIU Brooklyn loses, although driving one direction and flying back is much less common than it once was.

It's the first four games, so everyone is either going home or to the next site. The winner of LIU-Radford only has to go to Pittsburgh so may be bussing anyways...

Edit: that's a rough 350 miles over the Appalachians, if they have to bus that trip the NCAA needs to reevaluate.

It's 260 miles from Dayton to Pittsburgh, so that's more likely than not going to be a bus trip for whomever wins that game.

Apologies for being unclear, I was referring to Radford bussing from Radford, VA to Dayton.

While I think 350 miles is kind of long, that isn't that bad of a drive. It is highway most of the way.

Thanks for sharing. Kind of an interesting read.

Apparently, it is suggested to input all of your information for basketball early in the fall, so that IF you qualify, setting up the travel is pretty much already done.

I also wonder how Swift, Sun Country, Xtra, etc plan the routes. I could see them flying into a city and picking up a school, dropping them at Dallas, then turning around to pick up another school that is perhaps closer to the site so they can get the most usage out of plane and crew.

It may not be as glamourous to bus it, but for shorter trips, especially when the weather is poor, it might be faster. Even charters get delayed.

In most cases, it's probably highway/Interstate driving (ie. Villanova has a straight shot out the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Pittsburgh), though that might not always be the case.

Nice work. I think Texas Tech may have flown WN (https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SWA ... /KLBB/KDAL). That's a charter flight number on LBB-DAL. As for Rhode Island, PVD Is still sort of a mess.

Confirmed via URI's Twitter that URI travelled to Pittsburgh via bus:

https://twitter.com/RhodyMBB/status/973410511822950400

A check of Flightaware showed flights into and out of PVD cancelled on Tuesday.

I did find it interesting that Oklahoma and Texas Tech flew WN instead of one of the 'preferred' NCAA charter carriers like SY or LL (or, for that matter, G4, as was the case with Iona). As I understand it, teams typically will book charter flights via the NCAA's official travel agency, but, as I saw during the D2 football playoffs, a few of the Texas/Oklahoma/Arkansas schools would use WN. I guess if teams have a preferred carrier, as is the case with most Big 12 schools (particularly, the Texas schools, the Okie schools and the University of Kansas with WN), they can make such arrangements.

As I recall though, Oklahoma went with UA during the regular season. A lot of ExpressJet 145 trips. Football also went on UA 738s and 739s.

How does this work for the Women's Tournament? I know Oklahoma Women are playing in CLL on Friday. Do they bus even if it's ~500mi?

I do recall seeing a lot of OU football charters on UA (though there was one possible WN charter flight I spotted last football season to CMH - I think it was OKC-CMH, but don't quote me on it). FWIW, More often than not, the non-revenue (ie. sports other than football, basketball, soccer, baseball, etc.) will fly regular commercial. When I flew WN DAL-PIT last month, the University of Pittsburgh women's gymnastics team was on my flight and they boarded just like any other passenger.

The 350 mile ground/air transport perimeter applies to both men's and women's basketball. From the link posted earlier in this thread (http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files ... 171009.pdf):

For Division I men’s and women’s basketball, any team that is located less than 350 miles from the site of competition will be required to drive.

The WN charters so far are consistent with what they have done for several years: a handful of flights that generally connect two WN stations. It has nothing to do with "preferred" carriers, as the NCAA chooses the carriers and makes the arrangements with very few exceptions (e.g. Kentucky self-paid to fly to Indianapolis a few years ago). You probably see more WN charters among Big 12 schools simply because WN flies to virtually every Big 12 city.

Here are the movements after yesterday's men's games:

LIU Brooklyn: G4 M83 DAY-EWR https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAY ... /KDAY/KEWR
Radford: LL 738 DAY-PIT https://flightaware.com/live/flight/BSK ... /KDAY/KPIT (I assume they got to fly because of the short turnaround to the game on Thursday)

St. Bonaventure: LL 738 DAY-DAL https://flightaware.com/live/flight/BSK ... /KDAY/KDAL
UCLA: ?

I don't think it's exclusive to WN stations, since one of the Kansas schools (KU or Kansas State) would fly WN out of Topeka (FOE) instead of MCI. WN does fly to any airport in the US - WN station or not - which can support 737 operations. I'm curious if those flights are subject to reimbursement by the NCAA or not...

WN absolutely operates charters to all sorts of airports, but with regard to the NCAA men's basketball tournament specifically the vast majority of their charters connect two WN stations. In fact, I can think of only one WN tournament charter in the past five years that does not meet that definition; I believe it was picking up Oklahoma State from SWO.

I wonder that if the trip is between two WN stations, WN is simply able to offer the NCAA the best price for the charter as it has no positioning costs.

Had wondered where St. Bonaventure traveled from- that trip between Olean and BUF is no treat. Heck of a home court advantage for them.

On that original St. Bonnies flight BUF-DAY. Why BUF? They drove 75 miles north to BUF to fly south to DAY? Why not BFD in Pennsylvania?

Since I've been following NCAA tournament charters (12 years or so), the use of airports without commercial service has gone down quite dramatically. I don't know if it is an issue of the carriers who have taken over the brunt of the work not liking tertiary airports, NCAA preference, cost concerns on one side or the other, or something else altogether. Ten years ago, the roster of carriers who operated charters was quite a bit more diverse and included several of the legacies.

It also generally used to be more frequent in the past where the band/cheer squads traveled separate from team--even by plane. I was in band and back in 2011 NCAA Tourney, we (band/cheer) flew a day later than the team--we got a Regional Jet with a business class configuration (wider leather seats, extra legroom, seats facing another with tables in between, etc.). Every trip I was on after that, we were on a B737/A319/MD88 size aircraft with the team.

However, UMBC is still 430 miles away, so I imagine band/cheer would follow the same travel mode as team. Perhaps they're flying later, or UMBC decided not to send a band (I've seen that before too and they "rent" a local HS or college band and give them some team shirts to wear). I noticed that there were some UD pep band shirts in either the LIU-Brooklyn or Radford band last night. If UMBC decided not to send a band, then maybe the whole travel party could indeed fit on a CRJ.

Looks like UVA flew to Charlotte.. https://flightaware.com/live/flight/LOF462

Wonder if it was on their own dime since it was within 350 Miles.

Yup, and in the past sometimes band and cheerleaders did the trip with one mode one direction and another way another. I remember a trip where our band drove up (CLT-DAY essentially) but then were on a 737 (?) back with the team. That''s a similar distance to BWI-CLT, but it was also more than a decade ago.

Per Xavier instagram, it appears they flew to Nashville as well, despite being with 350 mile distance.

I wonder that if the trip is between two WN stations, WN is simply able to offer the NCAA the best price for the charter as it has no positioning costs.

Guys. The issue is availability, not price. There is all sorts of well-reported stuff about this in the media from a year or two ago. There are a limited number of carriers. The NCAA takes what it can get. The major carriers are generally-uninterested these days in doing these charters, but they will provide a few aircraft on a few charters if they can make it work. So that's why you see some WN, DL, etc., flights where the aircraft availability (e.g. between stations) will permit. At certain points, it becomes a very complicated ballet. And the airlines don't determine what goes where; the NCAA does. The NCAA basically spends all year planning to the extent it can for this.

You don't see too much Allegiant these days because Allegiant is less-interested in the business than it once was, whereas it used to be a bigger contributor of aircraft. You see lots of Swift and Miami Air and Xtra because these outfits want/need/encourage/plan-for this business (as do to a certain extent Kaiser and Sun Country), and so they get it.

As a general, admittedly-obnoxious, generalization, IMHO there is no certificated US carrier too crappy for the NCAA to use. The assumption is that if they're licensed, they are safe enough. See, because all pilots and maintenance are the same. They'll continue to think that way until there's another Marshall. Then it will change.

Hope that helps.

I suspect that one may have been self-funded in view of the fact that Cincinnati, who had an identical trip, apparently did not fly.

Texas flew SY AUS-BNA https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SCX ... /KAUS/KBNA

Kansas State took SY too (MHK-CLT) https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SCX ... /KMHK/KCLT

On that original St. Bonnies flight BUF-DAY. Why BUF? They drove 75 miles north to BUF to fly south to DAY? Why not BFD in Pennsylvania?

I doubt that BFD would be able to accommodate a 737 the way BUF can.
