Dynamic exits BK, seeks to grow fleet, use Eastern Air Lines name

Mon Mar 12, 2018 5:13 pm

Dynamic International Airways exited bankruptcy on March 8th after restructuring and reducing its debt along with gaining more than $50mil in new financing. Company is now fully owned by Ken Woolley who also is co-owner of Swift Air.

In DOT filing the company says it seeks to "immediately increase" its fleet up to 10 aircraft from current 5 to meet increasing charter /ACMI demand.

Along with the request, the carrier also seeks to license and utilize trademark of Eastern Air Lines held by sister company Swift Air.

OST-2010-0058 / OST-2010-0262

Poor Eastern. Just cant let it rest in peace can they.

Dead airlines need to stay dead, especially when they went out as poorly as the original EA did.

The show will last as long as there is demand and as long as they have contracts.

The average fleet age of almost 30 years sounds promising....not

Well considering their fleet consists of used ex-QF 763s and 762s, is it any wonder the fleet age is that?

Swift's 734 fleet is of the same vintage. Pretty typical for the ACMI guys.

I wonder if Swift might pick up 737-800’s and retire the 734 fleet.

Why would they use 763/762 when it seems like many of their charter operations are TPAC between China and US? Is it really more cost effective even after taken into account mandatory Anchorage stopover?

Don't they already have a few 800's.

Swift should fold them in one operations. All the operations are located in Greensboro.

Well, at least we might get to see what an Eastern 767 would look like. If they ever pick up an ex-AA bird, they could even keep the polished metal!

I’m not even sure what Dynamic’s actual livery is.

What else could they use, though? 747s would be too big and A330s and 777s aren’t cheap enough.

They inherited two from Eastern, but I haven’t seen them at MIA for months and was wondering if Swift was still flying them. They used to be regular sights here but now I walk in on Saturday morning and see a neat line of 4 Swift 737-400s parked at Concourse F.

Truly a shame how former airline names are simply plastered around one after another by these fly by night outfits.

Swift has been around for 20 years. I expect that their business model will be used. The idea is to protect the Eastern trademark...which can be done by painting one plane in the livery, be it a 737 or 767. BTW, doesn’t Dynamic fly the Patriots’ 767s?

Swift still operates the two Eastern airplanes, plus it chartered four -800s from Travel Service to run Apple Vacations this winter. It more recently picked up a couple of -400s from Alaska, and 5 -400s and 2- 800s from Xtra (most of which have been leased back).

I really don't see much of a benefit in using EA's name.

For anyone that actually remembers the airline, it was already greatly tarnished one that suffered a messy death.

The A340 is a possibility but the MD11 are there any if any Passenger models in storage somewhere anywhere in the world today.

Got to use the EA IP that Swift purchased somehow, or else they lose it. I don’t know the charter market all that well but I suspect the Swift name is held in higher esteem than Dynamic’s.

Well, rumor has it AA is retiring FORTY-FIVE of the bloomin' things, so I don't see why Swift/Dynamic/Eastern (SwEaDy?) couldn't pick up 5-10. They're rumored to only be at half-life.

I don't know; I think in a lot of cases nostalgia blinds people to the bad parts of things that happened in the past.

A340-300 would be a big step up though. The 767-300ERs are approximately mid-life in terms of hours and cycles; the 767-200ER (plus the one they're going to get back soon from Air Italy) are near 100,000 hours.

Also of note, with Ken Woolley now the owner of Dynamic, the airline now owns completely all of its fleet, plus the Air Italy 767-200ER I-AIGH (they had previously been "leased" from another entity controlled by Woolley).

Now, as for Dynamic/Swift/Eastern, they should consider some of the AA B738s to be retired soon, but they'll also be competing with AerSale for some birds as well (AerSale might want to re-fleet XTRA Airways and retire the remaining 737-400s).

777-200ER are cheap to buy and available in numbers, but the frames on the market are mostly very used and they are expensive to operate. A340-300s are in the same situation. A330-300s have the same (or worse) range challenges as the 767s.

I think the next widebody aircraft for operators like this will be the 787-8. They'll get retired from the majors early, probably in the early-mid 2020s, once the majors can buy 787-10s at a rock-bottom price. They'll still have tons of remaining life and be much cheaper to fly than any 777.

DOT approved renaming “Dynamic International Airways, LLC” to “Eastern Airlines, LLC.”

Carrier may continue to utilize “Dynamic International Airways” trade name as necessary as well

At this point, they might as well merge swift and dynamic to form the new new Eastern.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but did the Bernie Sanders campaign use an Eastern 737-800 last year. I seem to recall photos of Sanders standing in front of an Eastern aircraft, which looked like a 738.

Also, for a number of years, the Chicago Blackhawks have used a Swift Air 734 for team charters. It's apparently configured with far fewer seats than a typical U.S. carrier would have in a 2-class setting. You figure that between players, coaches, trainers, equipment people, front office staff, broadcasting personnel, and press members, probably 60 to 80 people are on any given charter.

It was also an Eastern flight that almost slid off the end of the LGA runway carrying then VP candidate Pence

If they are looking at using 30+ year old QF 767's, watch out! WestJet did the same and had nothing but MX problems that scarred their image, particularly at LGW.

Interesting follow up submittal from Swift Air.

NOTICE OF DEREGISTRATION OF TRADE NAME

On April 5, 2018, Swift Air, LLC ("Swift"), a U.S. certificated air carrier,' requested that the Department deregister the trade names "Eastern" and "Eastern Air Lines" stating it no longer intends to use those trade names in its operations.
We acknowledge Swift's request and deregister the trade names "Eastern" and "Eastern Air Lines" effective immediately.

The next step should be to merge the operations onto one AOC. Those 763s could be useful for NFL team charters.

Well, Dynamic has been running a charter series from Port Au Prince to Santiago for several months. This maybe what you recall; the current plan doesn't call for scheduled service.

I wonder if the government of Chile has requested this for repatriation purposes since Latin American Wings suspended operations (they want to come back as a contractor for Cubana, likely using their FACP for a route to the USA).

Interestingly, there’s currently a Dynamic 767 at MIA in the process of receiving Eastern titles, although the logo is in Swift Air colors.

Oh trust me, the multiple EA Facebook pages I'm part of have sounded off on this LOUDLY. Question is, was this a slap-on decal job just until actual painting can take place, or is this "it" and what they intend to use going forward?

Yea, this has "success" written all over it, right ?

What are you referring to exactly? Swift are very successful at what they do and have been for a long time.

Makes sense with the renaming of their Dynamic subsidiary to Eastern. Remember the original plan for the Eastern brand was to be on Swift’s 738k fleet.

Looks like a temporary decal application until the aircraft is due for its next repaint. The same can be seen with the Swift name slapped onto the ex-Eastern 738s.

Even more changes -- now Dynamic tells the DOT it will change its corporate name to "Servant Air, Inc."
