Boeing 787 suffers nose gear collapse

Fri Mar 09, 2018 12:02 am

A quite strange sight for plane spotters as a 787 suffered a nose gear collapse at Grant County International Airport.

If I'm not mistaken that's N507BJ (l/n 11) that's been in storage for some time.

What is or was the plan for this aircraft? Was it going to be delivered to a customer, or was it just sitting on Boeings hand?

What a let down!

I guess it's not just military transports that can kneel.

Did someone forget to pin the gear? If they forgot to put the pin in the nose gear, eventually the hydraulic pressure will be gone and well this could happen.

Assuming it was a slow and gentle drop, how much of the plane's weight is on those engines?

Wow, one of the "terrible teens" that were overweight and nobody wanted to buy. Sad ending for it perhaps.
Part of the bottom front had to have caved in I'm sure.

Tarp or something covering the forward right fuselage. Was the R1 door ripped off?

I'll be interested to know if the fuse suffered and if it did how they're gonna fit it.

Simple enough on a metal plane but it may be more complex that the Ethiopian patch.

I bet there is barely a scratch on it. It’ll get inspected and checked out and not require much.

Were those early engines also terrible teens. Otherwise why would they still be on the plane?

Humn, on a serious note now that I am looking at it...

Does it even look like the nose hit the ground?

Or is the plane resting on the engines which took the biggest hit?

If you look close daylight can be seen under the forward fuselage. So either the engines took the hit or they have started raising the nose but I doubt it as they would use a crane with a strap around the fuselage which is not there. :old:

Unless Boeing does something completely different. That's not how it works...

There are "Over Center" down locks that prevent a gear from just collapsing. Considering the position of the plane up against the building, my guess is maintenance was being performed on the landing gear system which included the gear being selected up and the nose gear was not pinned properly or the pin failed allowing the gear to retract.

You are right that maintenance could cause it if the gear isn’t pinned.

It's not the first 787 to suffer a gear collapse in similar circumstances. One of Ethiopian Airlines' examples had the same thing happen, with human fault being the reason. Took a few weeks for it to be repaired and be back in service. I think it was ET-ATH.

Looks like someone's insurance company gets to buy some new nacelles.

This aircraft belongs to the South Korean government and has been in outfitting for quite a while. I wonder if they were testing systems in preparation for a test flight?

Or maybe it's all Kim Jong Un's dastardly handiwork. :scratchchin:

Additional information: The 787 will be operated by Korean Air Lines on behalf of South Korea Government. It will replace the current B747-4B5 10001 (former civilian registration was HL7465), which lease will run out by April 2020, the 787 will arrive in time for replace the Queen of the Skies.

A colleague of mine works at another location at the airport. I told him about this when this thread was new and asked if he could drive around and take a look. He tried and I think he said it was back up on its nose gear. But I could be wrong...

Not a write off, but a Boeing AOG repair.
My understanding is that it was a misplaced NLG pin.

Would be a lousy designed aircraft if it was a write-off due to a frickin LG pin !!

Remember this?

The 787 is a composite airplane that AOG has probably close to zero experience in. The ELT repair was not a traditional simple bolt it together easy repair like Boeing claimed repairs on the 787 would be. The repair part was cut out a production body section which made that donor section useless for production use.

With any luck, since there isn't very much weight on the nose gear, the nose gear doors and possibly the lower engine cowling's probably prevented serious damage to the nose section. Serious damage to the nose, no problem! We'll just cut a repair part out of a production nose section and scrap the rest of it.

Just came across this. Apologies if it had been posted elsewhere before.

https://youtu.be/kG43FcgnA8g - Raising a Dreamliner

Looks like the nose gear held up alright and they were able to tow it away just fine.

I was looking at the strange placement of the UHaul Trucks at the beginning. Were they intentionally brought in to conceal the embarrassing sight?

The airframe in question, according to Skyliner, has been ferried to SBD for Lufthansa Technik. Good to see it airborne again, but is this for another step of the conversion process?

Saw it the other day - paint work. It will then return to Moses Lake I was told.

The idea of cutting a piece out of a complete barrel for a repair is nowhere near as extreme as it is being painted. First, the barrel itself is not stuffed; what goes into it is probably far more expensive than the empty barrel. And that is the only way of getting the exact repair piece, and is much less expensive than making a special mold to fabricate it. Expect Airbus to do the same should an A350 ever need a similar repair. Boeing could keep the remainder of the barrel in case another 787 needs a similar repair in a different spot, but they probably consider that to be unlikely and so won’t keep it.
