FlyBE's Scottish Isles gamble failed?

Wed Mar 07, 2018 6:42 pm

After scrolling around various sites, I noticed that FlyBE/Easterns flights to the scottish isles have all but stopped except one stornoway flight. I heard the battle was heavy with Logonair, but it seems there is only one winner.
Why did they (FlyBE) start this in the first place, they've gone from good connections with logonair towards nearly no flights, a bad reputation in the north of Scotland and a lot of lost destinations.

Is loganair the winner in this, and how did they manage to pull this of?

Loganair has much better brand recognition in these sectors (although not always the locals favourite), aggresively matched FlyBe in price war. The aircraft BE used was wrong for the sectors eg Embraer 170. Eastern operated routes had reliability issues. Loganair even had to handle BE services.
All in all doomed. Not sure punters really benefited.

Nobody in the islands really believed Flybe were in it for the long haul, they've seen similar activity from incoming ferry operators, yet always back the incumbent Caledonian MacBrayne, who have (like Loganair) been around the region for a long time and are also a good employer across the highlands & islands. None of that was available from Flybe who were quite clearly trying to muscle in. Highlanders are extremely brand loyal and really saw right through this Flybe/Eastern attempt at wooing them.

Loganair have signed a deal with BA selling their flights on 'ba.com'.

I suspect a relationship with BA is a much better long term proposition for LM than any with BE.......

Highlanders are very loyal to Logan Air for the vital services they have always provided.
