Any chance of a A380 stretch?

Mon Mar 05, 2018 6:52 am

I always read herethat CX is not interested in the -800 but would be interested ina stretched one, what are the chances of Airbus launching a A380 stretch? Emirates?

best wishes,

Airbus had originally planned for a stretch named the A380-900. However, no one wanted it - not even EK. Existing A380-800 operators are already complaining that it is not so easy to fill up an A380-800!

I think Airbus will eventually launch the A380-900 but not now. Maybe in 5-8 years.

CX prefers the 900 from what I heard

HKG third runway will probably be completed before Airbus start to consider making any A380 stretch

And that's all it was a ''rumour'' started on a.net not by CX although they had initially mentioned the A380-900 while the aircraft was in it's infancy but obviously Airbus never went ahead with the 900 version.

If you care to read post number 2 by user FLEE he sums it up correctly!

People have to realise that rumours aren't started by airlines or companies themselves they are started by fantasists usually with an agenda. The world of aviation as a hobby is full rumours often started by individuals as fact and with no substance behind them and I for one never take any notice of so called rumours until they are confirmed otherwise.

The Airbus A380 won't be ordered by CX anytime soon and even if they were interested don't you think that we would have seen some sort of order for the aircraft by now.

Considering Cathay don't even have the A380-800 model it's a no from me. Rumors aside, if that's too big what makes you think a -900 would be better?

After the 3rd runway is built the other two runways will be closed one at a time for runway and taxiway upgrades, it will be some time (best part time of 10 years) before the 3 runways are fullly operational.

That is not true, many public comments by Tony Tyler at the time, circa year 2000 eg

“Cathay Pacific does not want to introduce the proposed Airbus A3XX before 2007 at the earliest, Cathay Director of Corporate Development Tony Tyler told The DAILY at the Phoenix Aviation Symposium. Tyler said Cathay does not want to get the aircraft sooner because it does not want to be bothered with possible early production aircraft problems. Tyler said Cathay was looking at using the A3XX on routes like Hong Kong-London and Hong Kong-Los Angeles. “

From http://aviationweek.com/awin/cathay-doe ... -a3xx-2007

CX was one of the original 14 participant airlines in the A3XX development in the late 1990s.

I do wonder where you get these "truth" from? It is all a lot less clear cut than your postulations make it out to be.

I think the rumours surrounding the A389 and CX revolve around the fact that the A388 does not have enough cargo capacity that fulfils CX's needs. A stretch seems to increase the belly cargo capacity but ignores the fact that CX is very insistent on providing frequencies over sending 1 VLA.

Just out of interest, who was the 14?

Maybe Airbus can do a small stretch on a a380NEO, if it ever happens. But that's not due until ~2025 and CX persists in providing frequencies rather than capacity. On top of that, a stretch won't provide the cargo capacity CX needs, since the stretch means more pax, and thus more space taken up by luggage.

Unless the 380NEO comes out to be too great that an airline can compete against it with only having it themselves, we won't see a380 in CX livery.
