Comac ARJ21 visits Europe

Sat Mar 03, 2018 2:33 pm

Grap your camera if you have the chance: a Comac ARJ21 test bed is visiting Europe this week.

A very welcome visitor in Bergen today, arriving from Helsinki and due to continue onto Iceland on Sunday. Aircraft was reported full of ballast tanks for testing.

Short DC-9 with modified cockpit windows, CF34 engines, Tupolev designed wings - made with McDonnell Douglas tooling left in China.

Interesting aircraft.

Are the engines in a good place relative to the wing?

It's the ARJ21, not C919 :rotfl: :rotfl:

You’d think they would at least wash the plane first.

Flown one time (intentionally), not much different from other planes...

It seems the only thing DC is the fuselage. This might be part of the reason why the plane has had so much issues!

Good luck to the testing team, hope they take away new knowledge for the C919.

Let's just hope the engine doesn't make a "k(l)ung pao(w)" noice ... this is not a plane-design you want as a EU-airline.

A DC-9 produced in typical Chinese fashion. Mix and match different designs and it becomes their own design. Antonov wings and a CRJ/E-Jet engine.

Dirty with what looks like an unpainted rudder. What's that black thing just forward of the wings in line with the windows?

Yes, the NEO has far fewer issues. Right now 4 ARJ-22s are required to do the duty of one and they keep an A320 on standby despite having a large dedicated maintenance team. It is probably the most maintenance intensive subsonic jet in commercial duty.

If it's made in China, they've "taken away" plenty of new knowledge, just before they started building the thing.

Interesting aircraft.

Actually the new wing was designed by Antonov of Ukraine (not Tupolev). The fuselage is based on those of MD-80/90 previously assembled under license in China (admittedly both DC-9 derivatives).

I agree, should be a nice Frankenstein-monster to fly on!

I noticed a cabin door just forward of the engine, which the short DC-9s didn't have. Does the Comac retain the tail cone escape, or does this door replace it (no tail cone ejection)?

Edit: and does it have the ventral stair?

God damn I'm sorry to anyone that likes this aircraft but in my opinion:

1. It looks ugly AF
2. No way in the world you'd get me to fly on it.

My friend flew in one once and he looked shell shocked after he had got off. Words from his mouth "I'd rather fly a bird turd than this bird"....

I like the looks of this aircraft, too bad they messed it up to the point that it is now hopelessly outdated compared to the competition.

I don't think so, for either of those. Unlike on the MD-80, they placed the APU in the tail cone. Pictures of the aircrafts belly during air displays don't indicate any hatch under the tail for the ventral stairs, and all cabin layout graphics I have seen show that the space in the rear of the cabin is filled up with cabinets.

beauty spot. :-)
( .. and maybe give people something simple to ask about .. )

"unpainted rudder".

is the ARJ21 in Europe for a sales campaign or something different like testing or other?

Before it arrived HEL it was shown as a Shanghai Airlines 737 (B-5523) on Flightradar24. However that seemed to be just a one-off. So probably the best way to find it is to keep your eyes open. :)
