Airlines flying over Iraq again?

Sat Feb 24, 2018 12:05 am

Noticed on FR24 that there are currently many flights (EK/QR/EY/BA/LH/KL) between the Middle East and Europe that fly over Iraq. I thought that airlines still avoided overflying Iraq. What changes have been implemented for airlines to now deem it safe to fly in Iraqi airspace?

Flights over Iraqi resumed before Christmas and you ask what changes have been made.....Iraqi Military finally regaining territory that was once ISIS controlled therefore deeming the airspace safe enough for overflights!

And for what it's worth, the airspace has been partially open to commercial flights without origin/destination of Iraq since at least earlier in 2017--TK has been using the airways skirting the country's eastern border for flights to Mumbai, Singapore, Male, Colombo, Doha, Dubai, etc. even before Christmas.

I flew over Baghdad at 35,000 feet at least five years ago (EK I think); I think that airspace has been open on-and-off for a lot longer than 2017.

As an aside, Iraqi Airways have 20+ brand new 737-800s, a handful of Airbus (A320/321/330) and two 747s, all flying hard and on the YI- reg; and Baghdad has MEA Turkish ME3 Pegasus Aegean RJ MS etc, and even a homegrown LCC flyBaghdad. I had a great holiday over New Years, drove 1,000km from Baghdad to Basra, nothing but hospitality and friendly welcome everywhere. Must have been in >100 selfies. The war is over.

Thanks for the replies. Was more surprised as a couple of months ago I flew both LHR-DXB and LHR-DOH round trip and on all 4 flights we avoided Iraqi airspace.
