Qantas Relocating to T8 at JFK

Fri Feb 23, 2018 12:55 pm

This is great news. A much better experience all around, far better lounge access than what BA offers and perhaps on time performance will also improve as they switch to the smaller 787-9 further along.

Here's the link to the story

Regarding ontime performance, the problem QF has with this flight is that is it dependent on departing LAX ontime, if it doesn't it causes pressure on the ground crew at JFK to get the aircraft out ontime which a lot of the time doesn't happen

Nice to see alliance partners sharing a roof.

Hopefully, some day AA and BA make a deal and build out the rest of T8 for BA's use.

Which then has a knock on effect QF94, QF16, QF12 LAX-SYD.

Great for QF! T7 is such a dumpster of a terminal. T8 is not as nice as T4/5, but it's still a huge improvement.

BA's terminal 7 at JFK is small dating to 1970, its use today is far more then it was designed for. Qantas also flies in in the afternoon and departs in the early evening which is when T7 has multiple BA 747 awaiting their evening flights back to Heathrow plus IAG sister airline Iberia flights to Madrid. ITS aviation "Grand Central Station", AA's terminal is new and though active is huge with two concourses. Cathay, Latam and Qatar are among the tennants. BA needs to move to new quarters at JFK and should have done so years ago.

Actually the OW under one roof strategy is not that important for BA and IB (and now IAG's Aer Lingus) as most traffic ends in JFK. While connections onto AA are possible, most of them are carried out elsewhere in the US or at MAD/LHR. AA also flies to LHR and MAD with their own metal so easy under-one-roof connections are available at T8 if desired.

If only AA built Terminal 8 to its full planned size...

As long as investment and costs in T7 outweigh those offereed by AA at T8, IAG will prefer to have their own terminal at JFK where they have end-to-end control and some good income leasing space to other airlines.

T7 is not a dumpster at all

It is a very nice little terminal that is bursting at the seams between 4 and 8 pm. It is great the rest of the day.

I wish people on here would stop calling it a dump. You want a dump? Terminal 2 is a dump. The new Delta terminals at LAX are dumps. LGA is a dump. Terminal A at EWR is a dump. MSY is a dump.

Terminal 7 is well maintained and modern and always has been. BA has never let is deteriorate like AMERICAN carriers let their terminals deteriorate.

The problem with T7 is that it is too crowded at what are peak times for JFK (late afternoon and into the evening). It was not designed to handle the number of flights it currently does. The customs and immigration hall is a disaster. Four or more wide bodies arriving at the same time results in everyone having to line up as far back as the area outside the gate at times. It is far from well maintained. The security check points again are a bottle neck, even the one often used for premium cabin travelers to the far left. The nice thing about T7 arrivals on QF is that there is no customs or immigration formality to go through (it will be the same at T8). Passengers on the SYD, MEL, and BNE arriving services at LAX go through customs at TBIT. LAX-JFK is a domestic flight, but cannot carry local traffic. Terminal 8 is very large, with generally efficient security lines, and plenty of space. It could use a few improvements in dining establishments but it has a terrific Flagship and Admirals lounge and has the space and the design to cope with multiple arrivals/departures.

Before everyone dump on T-7, lets remember BA last year announced a refresh with working only starting to get on the way on 2018.

Personally, I like T-7 as its very manageable size wise. AA T08 while certainly nice is also massive and involves some long journeys to get around in.

I give it another 5 years and everyone on here will be saying about how great and convenient Terminal 7 is compared to everything else at JFK.

You all are funny.

Move won't do anything for On-Time performance.

JFK flight still reliant on LAX scissor hub connections with timely arrival and customs clearance of inbound fellow QF flights, as well as being at the mercy of regular ATC delay programs for JFK destined planes.

On a semi-related note, does QR still split their ops between T7 and T8, or are they entirely in T8 at this point?

Correct, the dependency is on the LAX end, and if one or more QF flights are delayed inbound, then it cascades onto the LAX-JFK segment. Beyond that, TBIT is a nightmare early in the morning and the process of going back to the departures area is not efficient at all. However, the use of a 787 should make turnarounds a bit faster. Fewer pax than a 747 and less plane to service.

Still split the AM (A350) flight arrives and departs from T7. The PM flight (B777) arrives and departs from T8.

I can't speak for what T7 will look like in the future, it could be the worlds best terminal for all I know.

What I can speak for is the present. About 4 months ago I passed through and it was quite possibly the worst experience ever. Busy, low ceilings, cramped and having to go round the mullbery bush to get to the Galleries lounge. Also a fastrack security that isn't even fast and on some sort of weird slope.

Anyway enough bashing, but after coming from Heathrow T5 and then going through T7 it was quite poor.

You had to walk around a bush to get to a lounge? You poor thing, that just absolutely had to be the worst. experience. ever.
